A modicum of moderator make-outs (Bonus Thread: Deadly Premonition)

I just got a tweet from 1UP about their review of this game, which admittedly I'd never even heard of until today. The blurb said simply "Twin Peaks + Shenmue + Resident Evil 4 + The Last Express = $20". Sounds pretty sweet to me. Any takers?

A shocking perfect score from Destructoid: http://www.destructoid.com/review-de...n-165168.phtml

They apparently looked past the awful visuals and sound and reviewed it for what it was: 2007 PS2 title finally seeing the light of day, with a batcrap crazy, but entertaining story.

I have to admit, I'm pretty curious about this. I'm sure used copies will be available for less than $10 in the next month or so and I'll probably snag it at that point. There's a six minute cut scene video up on the article Destructoid did comparing it to Heavy Rain. It's horrible, but it made me laugh. I could see really enjoying this just for the bizarreness of it. The video's about halfway down the page if anyone wants to see it:

The guys on 4guys1Up called this the 360 version of Heavy Rain. Of course Shane Bettenhausen works for Ignition Entertainment.

The reviews are funny.

IGN: 2.0 / 10
No Fuss Reviews: 1.0 / 10
1UP: B

Destructoid: 10.0 / 10

I may have to pick this up when it drops to $10 in a week

Well I think $20 is fair and so I'm taking one for the team. Best Buy doesn't carry it, so I ordered from Amazon. Will have it Saturday.

I'm a big story guy, so sometimes even if the gameplay is broken I can overlook it if the story is interesting enough. I'm looking forward to this.

I also took one for the team but probably won't be playing until the end of the month. I bought my copy at Fry's, they had about a half dozen of them. I'll probably write a full review as well, (I write on another website)...so I'll give the short version over here to help you guys out on the fence.

I had this pre-ordered from Amazon and meant to cancel, but then forgot. It's still sitting in the unopened box at home. I had intended to return it, but after all the reviews talking about its bizarreness and unintentional hilarity, I may have to give it a whirl eventually. It was $19.99, so no big loss.

re: A modicum of moderator make-outs (Bonus Thread: Deadly Premonition)

It was a struggle for me at first, but once I got a bit further into it I was genuinely interested in the story progression. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to finish it at the present. I definitely get what the game is trying to do, or should I say is happy to do, and there are factors to the game that are ambitious as all get out (from the sandbox format of the town you're in to the clock system that sees the townsfolk following patterns at any different time) but in the end there are still problems with some clunky "thowback" controls, getting around forementioned sandbox town, and just general oddity.

Well, I started playing last night...

- The hero smokes "Police" brand cigarettes.
- You almost hit two squirrels at one point with your car, and they make monkey noises as they scurry out of the way.
- You have the option to turn a flashlight on or off but you're never holding one, so the light is essentially coming out of your face.
- David Lynch could sue the shit out of them.

Finished the game last night. Took about 20 hours overall, but I barely touched the side missions.

Full review is forthcoming, but I side more with Destructoid than the other sites. If you value great storytelling in games, you have to check this one out.

As promised, a full review. I don't usually give scores, but if I had to, I'd give it an A-

re: A modicum of moderator make-outs (Bonus Thread: Deadly Premonition)

I did finally play it last night with my wife watching and one of our good friends (we are all gamers). If the control wasn't ridiculously wonky, this would be an awesome game, seriously. I can say it is a fantastic story and for that part alone I would recommend everybody at least give this a try. I did let our friend play it for about 20 minutes and she had basically the same things to say.

Basically, story: Amazing. control: crap. Thank goodness the 9mm is unlimited ammo or else I would have stopped playing after 10 minutes.

The graphics are a tad wonky...but I wouldn't call it next gen ass. Mainly cause they look more from the side of the original xbox rather than 360 graphics. I need to try it more this week and get a handle on the control, just practice (when there aren't any enemies around) and try to get it down. I want to give it a second chance in hopes that it gets better.

Most critics refer to it as PS2 quality visuals ... which save for a few titles very well could have been on the Dreamcast, so you aren't alone.

I bought it recently since I feared that it might be hard to find down the road due to its relative obscurity. Once I wrap up Mass Effect 2, I think I'll dig into it.

I don't care about the graphics if the story is engaging. But I fear about the controls.
