Re: Well it happened...3 Red Rings (360)

You guys would love this. I bought my 360 on release day. I got the red rings for the first time a few weeks ago. A couple of days later it just started working again!

Just curious : we aren't going to start a new thread every time someone gets a RRoD are we? Because that could really clutter up the forum here and RRoD is usually about 30% of the Offical 360 Thread anyway.

Well, getting the red rings doesn't mean your console is fried right then and there. Mine had the 3 red rings as well, all that we had to do is shut it off and checked around. Ended up popping the HD off and snapping it back into place and then turning the system back on. Not sure if that's really what fixed the problem, but nothing's happened since.

Really? I have no idea. I couldn't get anything but the red rings for a few days, then all of a sudden it started working again. I didn't do anything except press the power button!

Oh there was a huge uproar when Xbox 360 owners started to get the RROD. It was this uproar that led MS to institute the 3-year RROD warranty. The original Xbox 360 warranty was only 90 days. When the complaints started to pour in, MS extended the warranty to one year. The complaints still came in, so MS finally offered the 3-year warranty. Also MS has stated that they have spent over one billion dollars on the RROD repairs.

How long's it been since it happened? Same thing happened to mine last week.

Well that's shitty.

I think the RROD is going to bite MS in the ass big time when they release their next version of the Xbox. If they don't have a kick ass warranty with an automatic 3 year time period in place, even early adopters might be too cautious and stay away. I know I will.

That would be the time when Sony could seriously go for the jugular and beat MS completely. Release their next gen system at the same time or a seriously updated PS3 and I have no doubt that past fears of RROD (or fear of some other new unknown issue) will keep new buyers away in droves and/or push them to a Sony machine.

Well, it certainly hasn't been incentive enough for them to fix it this time around. I mean, look at the PS3 slim. That's a pretty big change hardware wise and there was nothing wrong with the fat PS3.

You'd think Microsoft would have invested the money they have been spending on repairs on re-engineering the 360 so they wouldn't have to provide a 3 year warranty because they know their product is shoddy in it's design.

I look at their game systems like their OS's. The Xbox was Windows XP. With the exception of the early drive problems a pretty solid console. The 360 is like Vista, good idea with lots of bell and whistles, bad implementation. Will they do a Windows 7 with their next console and gain back consumer confidence? Unlike the software world where they dominate, they have real competition in the gaming segment.

Re: Well it happened...3 Red Rings (360)

Well I did try the "pop the HD off" fix but that didn't work. Yea, it pop the HD off and then turn it on. Then turnoff and pop the HD back on. Also unplugg all the connections and wait 5 or so minutes. Use a can of compressed air. I did the push the tray release and "sync" button to get my code (based on number of lights flashine each time you hit the buttons0 and mine was "0020". It appears at least 80% of the issues are heat releated.

I don't have much to lose here. It costs me a total of $15.00 for the thermal grease and screws/washers for the heat sinks. The rest is time which I have plenty of.

But on transfering info from one HD to another.BB said they don't carry the "Transfer Box" but I can order one from MS. This is in case my fix doesn't work. Has anyone used this and how much are they? I'm almost leaning to the Elite if I have to get one for the 120HD but I don't need all the other stuff including the games.

Re: Well it happened...3 Red Rings (360)

If it's any consolation, my 2-year-old PS3 just quit reading Blu-ray discs, which seems to be a somewhat common problem, but so far, Sony has not instituted any special provision for the repair. I'm weighing my options now.

any way to know for sure if it is a newer, runs cooler model? it was bought just before X-Mas '09.

also, when i play, it is about every other day for about 1 hour.

Re: Well it happened...3 Red Rings (360)

Might I suggest anybody that is out of warranty, perhaps have already gotten the RROD but is working "fine" right now...trade it into Gamestop w/ cables and a controller, should net you close to $100 (keep the hd and you may have to remind them of the $20 bonus). Pick up a new arcade and you are only out $100 (or pick up an elite for $100 more and get a $50 gift card)

(today is the last day for the $50 gift card)

Never have had an RROD.

Got my PRO in December 2005. Upgraded it to an Elite in December 2007. Bough another Arcade in November 2009 for the bedroom.

Re: Well it happened...3 Red Rings (360)

Well I got the whole unit apart but stupid me picked up the wrong size plastic washers for the heat sink so I'll have to wait till tomorrow night for the test run. really not that bad taking apart. I'm following a three part series on YouTube. The hardest part is getting the fried thermal grease off the cpu's. He recommendd Rubbing Alcohol but its slow. A no-no on Goof-Off since it doesn't evaporate. I'll do a updat tomorrow night. Fingers crossed that this will fix it.

I think I used the same 3-part series on Youtube that you're using when my xbox died. It was surprisingly easy to do, and so far it seems to have worked like a charm. Getting the old grease off was a pain in the ass, though...

Good luck!

Re: Well it happened...3 Red Rings (360)

Well I'm not going to start dancing right away but so far so good. Right now I've got it hooked up via power and AV but still stripped down to the chasis running it to heat up for about 15 minutes. And yea....NO FREAKING "RED LIGHTS of DEATH"!!!!!......nothing but green!!!

For now I have no doubt it's the Thermal Paste Issue or in mine the lack of el cheapo paste, who knows. As I posted above that's the three step video I've followed down to a "T" except the 5mm screws for the heat sinks are different. I used allen head instead since I counldn't find the phillips pan head. If you see me on later then you know.

UPDATE--All is well and it even sounds better.

I'm on my 4th xbox now. I do not know how long this one will last.
To fix the RROD yourself, what equipment did you need to buy?

Re: Well it happened...3 Red Rings (360)

Well I followed th YouTube video on the link above. As to tools and hardware not much at all.

Tools
A No. #8 Star Torx Bit
A No. #10 Star Torx Bit
A Ractchet Screwdriver
A Pair of Pliers (vice grips or channel-locks will do)
A Flat-Head Screwdriver (average one but not small)
A Set-of Small Screwdrivers (They come in a plastic cae, 3 phillips and 3 flathead) for micro screws

Extras
A bottle of Rubbing Alcohol
Q-Tips
Thermal paste
Scotch Tape (no tape like Duct Tape or really tacky)

Hardware
(8) - 5mm x 10 Machine Screws (Pan Head or Allen)
(16) - 7/16 Nylon Washers - Don't get the really thin ones (about 1/32) but ones that's about 1/16. The ones I got came from Ace Hardware part #NYW10 at .12 cents each

Hope that helps

You lost me at A No. #8 Star Torx Bit.

I figured I will go ahead and ask this question here but I am afraid I already know the answer. They sent a sheet stating that I have to go back to Account Management and go into the Download History, select an item and then hit Download Again. It says to do this for every item in your history.

I have 600 fucking items in my Download History! I had no idea I had that much but is there an easier way of going thru this stuff? And does this DLC history include everything I have ever downloaded but also deleted?

Please tell me there is an easier way of going thru this crap. Pretty please.

The "Star Torx Bit" is this...

http://www.amazon.com/pc-Torx-Driver.../dp/B0002SPLQ8

Or an assorment of bits and handles like this...

http://www.tecratools.com/pages/serv...x_drivers.html

There are 6 - Long #10 Torx Screws that run from the bottom of the chasis and go into the top cover.

There are 10 - small #10 Torx Screws that hold the circuit board to the chasis

There are 3 - small #8 Torx Scews on the on/off board that has to be removed

And there are 8 - small #8 Torx Screws holding the Heat Sinks on the bottom of the chasis.

Everything else is held by tabs and has to be tripped.

I still think MS has not done enough to compensate customers. It is just outrageous that their customers have to cross their fingers and hope a product works every time you boot it up.

I paid $350 for my Xbox in 2008 and it RROD in less than a year. That is just wrong.
