Pre-emptive strike.

No bullshit bickering this time around, sound ok? If it starts, it gets locked.

Wii + DS =

Glad the PS3 is reaching a point where it's at least a credible threat. I like the idea of two viable HD consoles.

I wonder if the execs at Nintendo roll around naked in piles of cash.

Re: December 2009 NPDs

Glad New Super Mario Wii is a crushing success. Love the 2D Mario's so much more then 3D

I'm surprised to see the 360 be only that much less then the PS3. For the PS3, I bet it will be fairly close/leading with the 360 with things like God of War and Gran Turismo still on the horizon, but I still expect a drop in sales from the Slim/Price Cut after the holidays.

Was there a price drop/deal on the PS2 last month?

Re: December 2009 NPDs

For comparison, December 2008 numbers:

Wii - 2.15 million
NDS - 3.04 million
X360 - 1.44 million
PS3 - 726,000
PSP - 1.02 million
PS2 - 410,000

'09 was the biggest December yet for the Wii, which I have to admit surprised me.

Re: December 2009 NPDs

Good numbers for the PS3, should continue to January as Uncharted 2 got a lot of GOTY accolades.

Oops, not sure where my head was when I was writing that. Corrected my thought in relation to the 360.

Cool...thought maybe you were going for a Jedi mind-trick there.

Re: December 2009 NPDs

Obviously, the PS3 will drop off next month along with everything else post holiday (so I guess you'll be right), but my instinct is that from here on out, the it and the 360 will be within 10-15% of each other month to month depending on what releases come out.

At a minimum, the PS3 should be in good shape through March with GoW coming out and GT should be out sometime this Summer. But I think Heavy Rain will have limited appeal, and I think MAG will flop horribly.

So how the hell did Uncharted 2 fall outside the top 20 so fast?

I read on Kotaku that Sony had mentioned 950K for the year for Uncharted 2, and that it was around 500K on release month in October.

Kind of surprising given that other then MW2 which is multiplatform, it's THE big game for the year. I'd have to think it will pick up with all the accolades. Then again, PS3 software sales always seem to be lacking hence the assumption that many still buy the PS3 for Blu-ray.

Uncharted 2 wasn't in the top 20 last month either.

November 2009 top 20:

Spoiler:
1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360)
2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
3. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii)
4. Assassin’s Creed II (360)
5. Left 4 Dead 2 (360)
6. Wii Sports Resort (Wii)
7. Wii Fit Plus (Wii)
8. Assassin’s Creed II (PS3)
9. Dragon Age: Origins (360)
10. Mario Kart (Wii)
11. Wii Play (Wii)
12. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)
13. Value Game Bundle (Wii)
14. Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story (DS)
15. Dragon Age: Origins (PS3)
16. Value Game Bundle (Wii)
17. God of War Collection (PS3)
18. Halo 3: ODST (360)
19. Borderlands (360)
20. Madden NFL 10 (360)

Which prompted these comments from analyst Michael Pachter:

“Sales of Uncharted 2 fell precipitously in November, and other than pressure from Call of Duty, it’s really hard to fathom why.” He continues “I’m sure that the game will get a boost from winning the VGA’s Game of the Year, but it’s only sold 650,000 in the U.S. so far, which is really shocking given its review scores.” He concludes “I expect God of War 3 to perform better, but am troubled by the relatively lacklustre sales of Uncharted 2.”

That would mean it would have sold about 300k for last month. Because we know these numbers from NPD information:

Uncharted 2:
Oct. 2009 - 537k
Nov. 2009 -113k (out of top 20)
Dec. 2009 - ??? (out of top 20)

Re: December 2009 NPDs

I wonder if the Uncharteds are like the Arrested Development of games. They're highly rated and the people who have played the games seem to love them, but they're not huge hits.

Re: December 2009 NPDs

Really surprised by those Uncharted 2 numbers.

So the PS3 is still looking for a system seller, like Halo and Mario/Wii Fit/etc. in the other consoles?
Or maybe, they already have it, but it's not a game, it's the blu-ray format.
What do you think?

It could be BD, but that's becoming less and less of a factor as standalone players come down and price and add features.

The only thing I think it could be, if not GOW, is Gran Turismo 5. However, I just don't know if a sim racer can have the kind of widespread appeal of something like Burnout in this more casual age.

I think both will be big sellers, but I agree that God of War 3 will sell more than Gran Turismo 5.

Re: December 2009 NPDs

My gut reaction is that people see Uncharted as a rental and thus buying habits reflect that. It's a tight 10-12 hour experience that probably doesn't warrant a whole lot of replay. Of course it has multiplayer, but like most games not named CoD or Halo, people play for a few weeks and return to the two big dogs.*

*I have no idea how well Uncharted's MP fared, I'm just spit balling.

You're just saying that because your console of choice sucks and my console of choice rules.

I was going to say that I was surprised not to see Spirit Tracks ranked higher, but I see it just missed the top ten.
