Truthfully, I really just want an XBLA/PSN/WiiWare sort of release with no new songs. I think holding songs back for a retail release is disingenuous at this point. I'd rather spend $20 on a new engine and $40 on 20-30 DLC tracks I want than $60 on a disc with 70-80 songs I'm split on.
- A digital release of the RB3 engine (priced at ~$20) with 50-60 disc-worthy songs as separate DLC. - A physical disc-only RB3 release (priced at the standard $60) with a voucher to download 30-40 of the RB3 DLC tracks of the players' choosing. - A special edition (bundled with instruments) with all 50-60 RB3 tracks. - A limited edition release of just the disc that comes with the special edition with all of the RB3 tracks priced at ~$80. This would have a number of advantages, I think. People could just download the engine and use it to play their existing libraries along with maybe a handful of DLC tracks that they see as worthy of purchase. Or they could buy the disc-only version if there's enough songs they want to have in the game (which also provides a bit of a discount on the songs). Users new to the series could buy the bundle and get the full list of songs to prevent parties/tour mode from getting old quickly, while die-hard fans of the series could just get the limited edition version. Users would have more control over what's in their library, which would really drive home the customization aspect of the RB series. Everybody wins! |

Re: Rock Band Thread - This thread was made for Rockin, and that's just what it'll do
Is there a way to see all the RBN content in one big list filtered by release date? That is what i want. I want to check every couple weeks and skim through and test all the songs that i hadn't seen before.
As it stands now it is already kind of awkward to browse and if the content keeps coming it will only get worse. |

I immediately bought The White Stripes pack today and played it when I got home. I really liked it better than the first pack. Lots of rockin' goodness.
Lady Gaga and a Cartman cover? Just awesome. |
Re: Rock Band Thread - This thread was made for Rockin, and that's just what it'll do
The James Gang song isnt the original original version...at least not the one that I'm used to (it's labeled as an alternate studio version) but I dont care :D

Re: Rock Band Thread - This thread was made for Rockin, and that's just what it'll do
You people saying you want RB3 to come as just the engine and no songs must be living in another world. They would catch so much shit for that when people got home and found there were no songs and just a voucher. What about people who don't connect their systems online? It'll just never happen. The best you can hope for is some type of filtering where you can turn off/hide songs from setlists or quickplay.

God forbid we, the consumer, be offered choices. Did you even read FatTony's expanded options?
Songs are what sell these games and if there aren't songs on the disc and on the box, then people (read: not us) will not even give it a second look. If they see Bohemian Rhapsody and Paradise City on the box, those are songs that will sell games. |
Re: Rock Band Thread - This thread was made for Rockin, and that's just what it'll do
So you strike that one option from the list. His options DID cover a retail solution in the same vein as RB1 and RB2. It was brainstorming, not gospel. There's a little bit of wiggle room given that his suggestions aren't even from within the company itself. For example, the prices...
It would sell to me without the songs if the engine was enticing and the price was right. Also, I'm assuming that RB3 on-disc songs will follow the same pattern as RB1 and RB2. 20% I think are absolute joys, 20% that are fun, 20% that are tolerable, 35% that I could live without (but am stuck with), and 5% that are audible abortions. You can't come in here and say that you don't think that holding songs back solely for inclusion on RB3 is anything but disingenuous. Not with the pace and variety that HMX is capable of and especially since that is complimented so well by RBN. So, I'll reiterate my hope. I would happily buy the engine separately. I would spend an equal (or greater) amount of money on DLC songs that I actually want rather than getting a pre-packaged hodgepodge. Is it possible one of the "revolutionary" features will be the option to disable songs? Possibly, but that still means I'm paying for stuff I don't want. RB, as you well know and have attested to many times, is made better by a customized library. Plus, who wouldn't (as Corvin pointed out) want the ability to play RB any time from the hard drive without a disc? |
Re: Rock Band Thread - This thread was made for Rockin, and that's just what it'll do
I would happily pay $60 for an RB3 digital download option from the "Games on Demand" section.
I'm just saying it's a pipe dream to think that they'd ever release "the engine" at either retail or digital. That option might sell to you and a very small portion of the audience, but definitely not enough to make it worth their while to produce. As for holding back songs for release of on-disc stuff, well, that's the nature of the beast. Retail is still a huge outlet and they need songs that will catch the public's eye and make them *need* to buy RB3. |
Re: Rock Band Thread - This thread was made for Rockin, and that's just what it'll do
I believe this is why they "save" high profile songs for disc releases. They know they will recoup the costs of the licenses by charging you 60.00 straight up.
If they allowed you to choose your own songs as DLC after you purchase then they would not profit as much. |
Re: Rock Band Thread - This thread was made for Rockin, and that's just what it'll do
That's counter-intuitive. They charge $60 for the game, the pressing, the packaging, the materials, the retail markup, and then all the songs to cover licensing. RB2 had 85(?)+20 songs for $60. They'd make more per song sale outside of that retail outlet. They may not sell me as many songs through DLC, but what they do sell will be at a higher margin. Also I get to pick what I do and do not want.
Sure, it may be a pipe dream and just a hope. It's not impossible. It's sensible given they have over 1200 songs already out there and I'm sure that'll be 1500 by the time RB3 hits, even approaching 2000. They need to understand there's a market of us out there that are connected to their networks who are willing and capable of upgrading just the hub of the game. The content is our unique and individualized libraries. They know this because of the sheer number of sales of DLC. Yes, there are still people who will need a disc-based "track pack". I just saying that RB3 doesn't have to come in the one flavor. How cost-prohibitive would it really be to offer both, I wonder? Hell, a simul-release through Games on Demand, but without the songs seems totally feasible. |
