It's actually flash storage. I think it has 16GB of chips but with 12GB accessible.

Think of it as pretty much a version without the hard drive included, and you add that yourself.

I'm not liking any of these bundles. Wish I could buy just a core set but that 12GB is just insulting.

Maybe we'll keep looking for an older one that can play PS2 games.

We found the 500 GB bundle with Gran Turismo and Infamous for $300 at Meijer, but we had a 20% off coupon, so we saved some coin there.

I'd forgotten how long it takes to download all the patches, it was like an hour to install Gran Turismo, and I got in two beginner's races before bedtime.

And I was kinda pissed the games were in cardboard sleeves instead of actual cases....

That bundle is supposed to be $269.99 at retail.

I tried to price at several different stores and that bundle kept coming up at $300, and that's what Amazon has it at.

Regardless, with the coupon we saved enough that it was worth getting locally.

This is no longer sticky now that the PS4 is out and we've all hauled our old PS3's out to the dumpster.

The dumpsters are going to be a goldmine for the next week, what with all the old PS3s, old 360s, and brand new Kinects.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

I need to find one of those dumpsters. They should be filled with a bunch of PS3 games too, since you can't play those on the PS4. I should have held off on buying GTA5.

So if you wander into Playstation Home and check out the PS4 Experience section, you can obtain voucher codes for PS1 games Warhawk, Destruction Derby, and Twisted Metal.

Ooohh, that's almost worth launching Playstation Home to get.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

I'm pretty sure I already deleted Home. If that's the case, it's not worth re downloading. Would love me some Destruction Derby though. Although, the game probably doesn't hold up too well.

I installed it, tried it, then deleted it and took a roofie to try and forget the experience altogether.

If you install/reinstall the application it will take a lot of time to apply all the updates.

But if you are bored...

Thanks. Was pretty easy to pick up all three. application was kind of choppy, but it didn't take very long.

So my 160GB PS3 Slim is pretty much filled up and I'm thinking I should get a new hard drive for it, especially with Battlefield 4 arriving next week and apparently needing quite the install space.

Never considered this before, so I need your help.

What do I do? Recommendations? 2.5" SATA HDD, correct? Is there a better RPM to have? Our PS3 is pretty well ventilated, plus we have one of those horizontal fan bases to help cool it down.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Any standard SATA laptop drive should work. I use a 7200 RPM drive without any trouble. Hardest part is doing the backup of your current PS3 and restoring on the new one.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

Looks like there are some videos on how to do it but yes, I'm a little nervous doing that data transfer.

If there's an affordable solid state drive is that a better way to go than a standard HDD for any discernable reason? Will a PS3 even take a SSD?

cruzness 11-29-13 09:16 AM

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

It will but I don't think it is worth it. More Gigs would be more important. Ive replaced both hard drives for my PS3s and easily the worst part is the data transfers. Well... that and making sure not to strip the screws. get 750GB to 1TB and you will never have to worry about PS+ filling up your hard drive. Both my PS3s are near full capacity and I am now thinking about upgrading my slim again to 1TB or greater.

1TB Solid state hybrid for $100
http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-...5738508&sr=1-1

WD 1TB Drive that I may pickup for $70 (I tend to favor Western Digital drives. I have never had any sort of problem with them. Both my PS3 replacement drives are WD and both my external hard drives are WD)
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digita...a+laptop+drive

story 11-29-13 11:08 AM

Saw that Seagate as a lightning deal last night but couldn't pull the trigger. My brother-in-law works at Seagate so I usually go that way but if the WD is better and cheaper that just may be the solution. Haven't watched videos on data transfer yet. How long does it take?

I downloaded the digital version of Battlefield 4 from the PS store. The entire install on PS3 is only 11gb. I think the huge install numbers are for next-gen systems. If you're getting the disc version, I don't think hd space will be an issue. Never hurts to have an upgraded drive though, especially if you plan on keeping your PS3 for a lot longer.

Do you have an external you can use for the data transfer? Your external has to also be formatted to FAT32 if it isn't already (Mine was NTFS and I had to changed it, I used a free app called SwissKnife and it wasn't that hard). The actual transfer and restore are a PITA because they take several hours each, but there's nothing to it as far as difficulty. Figuring out how to format my external to FAT32 was the hardest part.

I recently moved my PS3 to the family room and will be my main BD player. Which remote/dongle does everyone recommend to work with my Harmony?

I never could justify the exorbitant price of that add-on. I just use the Harmony to turn the TV/receiver on, then the PS3 bluetooth remote to control the PS3.

I saw a couple of those on the clearance shelf near the videogame section at my local Best Buy a couple of months ago. I think they were marked as $20 or $25. I wouldn't count on finding any now, though, because I'm pretty sure that was before the new consoles released.

I was just wondering if anybody could answer my question:

I saw they have DMC as a download for PS+ members, if I were to buy a subscription for 1 month just to download this game, would I still be able to play it after my membership runs out?

No. You can only play free PS+ games for as long as you have a current PS+ account.

Yeah, I picked mine up during a Best Buy store closing for like $18.

That's the whole point of having a Harmony. So you don't have to have more than one controller ;)

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

Damn! $50?

Well that gave me incentive to hunt down that custom IR USB thingy (SCHMARTZ PS3IRX1) that someone was making/selling early in the PS3's life. When my fatty died it ended up getting tossed somewhere and when I got the slim I assumed it wouldn't fit. I thought I threw it away. Took some time but finally found it.

For anyone looking for a cheap solution to a larger hard drive for their PS3, the deal of the day at Best Buy today is the Rocketfish 500GB Hard Drive for $64.99. Pretty good solution for all of those free PS+ games.

That doesn't seem like a great deal when 500GB drives routinely cost the same or less at Newegg or Amazon. Is there anything special about the Rocketfish drive, besides including the mounting bracket (if you somehow lost the one that came with the system)?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

No, some people seem more comfortable with officially licensed products. And yeah, not sure if that one is any easier to install or not, but if you can grab it for the same price it might be worth it to some.
