Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I had to run the update yesterday just to buy Journey. Wasn't shocked at all that there was some type of update to sit through. Didn't really poke around the store enough to notice anything different.

 I clicked the "holiday sale" button grabbed Journey and was on my way.

Yeah the new PS store sucks big ones. It is terrible. So clunky, non user friendly, slow and the added steps to download a demo is pointless and frustrating.

The store sucks and there is no ifs about it. It is downright awful and the search feature is like one of those things that you create and then sit back and watch other people try and use it while you chuckle. I can't believe that any professional seriously believes that the new site is better than what they had before.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Visually I think it is better, at least being able to read items. But usability absolutely is sucky.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Just ran into a funny issue. Got Dredd blu-ray from Netflix and it put it in the PS3. Made some funny noises and nothing. Took it out, put it back in and same thing. I tried 2 other discs, which worked completely fine.
So I get out my Panasonic BD30 (4+ year old blu ray player), hook it up, and it plays the disc like a champ. |

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
In one of the unluckiest series of events I've ever heard of, I just returned my extra $199 Black Friday PS3 Bundle to Best Buy yesterday afternoon (just under the 60 day return period). We had purchased it for the minivan, but found out that it won't work right for that purpose. I had wanted to hang onto it as a spare, but my wife wanted me to take it back while I could. Of course, last night I go to play something and my five-year-old PS3 gives my a blinking red light and won't turn on. Sure enough my system is dead and the cheapest I can find a new one is $250.
:gah::grumble::brickwl2: Question : Do you think I should take the 600 GB HDD out of my deceased system and put it in the new PS3? I need more storage. That couldn't be my current system's cause of death, could it? I'm really dreading trying to re-download the over 500 GB of content I had on that previous system. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Your 600GB of data on your old PS3 will not carry over if you install it into a new PS3, as far as I understand. The hard drive data is tied to the individual PS3 and will be reformatted once it's put into a new one.
For what it's worth, I grabbed an Assassin's Creed 500GB Super Slim bundle of Amazon Warehouse deals the other day for $192 shipped if you still want to pick up an extra one. Game was still sealed, PS+ code still worked, everything was essentially brand new despite being listed as "Good." |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
You sure tend to luck out with Amazon Warehouse purchases, TL. I can never find good deals there and doubt I would have spent $200 on a "Good" condition PS3 bundle regardless (I don't need the games and just want a reliable PS3).
I know I don't get to keep my data (which is beyond stupid, but whatever -- at least my game saves are all backed up), I was just wondering if there was any danger in putting it into the new PS3. I'm hoping the easy-to-strip, incredibly tight screws are a thing of the past and that it's easier to swap HDDs now. |

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Gotcha. Don't know if the screws are any different, but having destroyed them in the past on my launch PS3 I've given up on upgrading my hard drives.
The nice thing about AWD is that if it shows up and isn't up to snuff it's all backed by Amazon's return policy. I've returned one or two duds in my time. But after selling the bundled ACIII on CL for $40, the whole system cost me 150. For a backup/bedroom PS3, that was a great price for me, especially since the system was actually new (just a destroyed outer box.) |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I haven't had any trouble changing it on an earlier slim and the holiday slim from last year though I don't know that the screws are really any different.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I spoke to Playstation and while, yes, I'm fucked with my 60 GB unit, if I can still find my old 60 GB HDD and put it back in the PS3, they'll let me upgrade to a <strike>refurbished</strike> "recertified" Slim model for $99. That's a fine deal if you ask me. Now where the Hell did I put that 60 GB HDD when I moved?
Edit : I found it. Called up Sony and for $99.99 they're sending me a coffin, will take my 60 GB corpse and then send me a recertified Slim PS3 with a 160 GB drive. That seems very fair in my book. I lose BC, but that's not a big deal since every PS2 game I ever played on the PS3 (Sly, Ratchet, God of War, Okami) I now own an HD PS3 version of anyway. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
So apparently Dust 514 is going into open beta next week. I'm excited to try it. Never played Eve online but it looks like it could be a cool team based shooter that is free to play.

I just got the sony elite pulse headset and the sound is amazing, but I'm noticing slightly more bass in the left vs right ear. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm not sure if I'm just being paranoid or there is problem.

Oh wait, yes I can on the PC. Let me know also if it's game or music sound. I'll tell you what I think, though I'm not an audiophile and might not appreciate the subtleties. If it's an issue that bothers you, I'd call Sony Customer Service. I've been really impressed with them. |

We also have hard data on Orbis's memory set-up. It features 4GB of GDDR5 - the ultra-fast RAM that typically ships with the latest PC graphics cards - with 512MB reserved for the operating system. This is in stark contrast to the much slower DDR3 that Durango will almost certainly ship with. Microsoft looks set to be using an offshoot of eDRAM technology connected to the graphics core to offset the bandwidth issues the use of DDR3 incurs. Volume of RAM is the key element in Durango's favour - there'll be 8GB in total, with a significant amount (two sources we've spoken to suggest 3GB in total) reserved for the OS. There'll be a relatively high CPU overhead too, with potentially two cores reserved for the customisable apps Microsoft wants to run in parallel with gameplay. Orbis has no such ambitions and may power past the new Xbox simply because it focuses its resources on out-and-out games power. There's always the possibility that Microsoft has looked at the prior success of Nintendo and its own Kinect and come to the conclusion that chasing after the maximum in raw horsepower isn't the way to win the next console war. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Nothing like maintenance to take the network down for 2 whole days. Thanks Sony.

Can you use Amazon Instant Video while PSN is down? I can't seem to get in, but I don't know why I should need to be on PSN.

I can do Netflix but not Hulu Plus. Haven't checked Amazon.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Sony’s PlayStation 4 To Feature Controller Similar To Nintendo’s Wii U GamePad?
Spoiler:
According to CVG sources, Sony may very well abandon the DualShock controller design with the release of the company’s inevitable next-generation home console, which will probably be called the PlayStation 4. Instead, Sony’s PlayStation 4 controller will supposedly include biometric sensors and an LCD touchscreen, not unlike Nintendo’s new Wii U GamePad. Similar to how the Wii U console is compatible with Wii Remote controllers, gamers may be able to interact with Sony’s forthcoming home console via DualShock controllers. http://mynintendonews.com/2013/01/18...wii-u-gamepad/ |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Yea! No more f*cking Dual Shocks. Not sure about the complete aping of the WiiU pad though. Still loses points for convex analogs.
What will be interesting to see is launch titles for both platforms. The timeframe to welcome a new Uncharted is perfect for a launch title. On the flip side, depending on when these launch, we could also see Halo 5 as a launch title. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Pretty sure that's someone's photoshop imagining. I hope the new controller repositions the analog sticks to be more comfortable.
|
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I don't have issues with the current controller.
But I'm not a hardcore gamer. |

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I'm lukewarm on that thing, because I'm not really a fan of touchscreens unless it's a portable device (where it's necessary to keep the size down and the screen large).
I hope they keep the colors on the buttons. It's not the buttons themselves that are important, but the in-game prompts for QTEs, tutorials, etc. If those have different colors, you can process them faster. But of course, if the buttons aren't colored the developers won't make the prompts colored, as we see on the PSP systems. Maybe I should start a National Association for the Advancement of Colored Buttons. ;) |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I liked that controller better the first time... when it was called Playstation Vita

Sony's first two consoles either were first to market or at least came out within a few months of competitors. If PS4 is the first to be released this time I think it can return to previous standing.
|
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
It can't be the first. The WiiU already gets to claim that title.

Most developers (including the Japanese devs that helped make the PS2 what it was) have gone multiplatform. Even on the PC we're seeing a bit of it, with more games for Mac and Linux, and Valve's upcoming Steam console being Linux-based. I'm not saying Sony will do poorly, or even that their competitors will take over; I just don't think we'll see any one console dominating the market again. |
