Zero interest in 3D games or movies. The 3D movies at the theater make my eyes fatigued and I'm not buying glasses for the whole family at home. Pass.

I have a 3D TV but no interest in replacing my Denon receiver to get one that supports HDMI 1.4 :(

Same here in all aspects. I just don't get 3d and why they are pushing it so much. As an occasional spectacle, I can deal with it (like at a theater for a big movie), but at home, no way. I don't pay money to make my head hurt on purpose if I can avoid it.

Again, it's not worth buying a new TV just to get the ability to play 3D games, but for those who already have it, getting that ability is a nice bonus. If watching in 3D gives you a headache, I can understand not wanting it, but otherwise it's a pretty cool novelty to try out once in a while. Without fail, the thing that impresses my guests the most in my new "man cave" is seeing the 3D effect in movies or games on the TV. It really is pretty cool up on a big TV screen, even if it's just for short bursts (it's certainly not for long play sessions).
If there's any fundamental difference between that gimmick and the Kinect (another limited gameplay novelty -- one that sold like gangbusters), I'm not seeing it.

I guess I hadn't turned on my X-box in a while since I just got the dash update. And while I read what the update entails, which isn't much, it was a fairly lengthy download, so I'm wondering if it updated anything else.

I'm sure the dashboard isn't patched, but pushed as a whole every time.

It's because during this particular update your drive is being flashed with a whole new firmware to allow for the new XGD3 disc format.

Possible price cut for 360:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/..._campaign=blog

Notice the image shows 299.99 for a 250 with Kinect Bundle deal. When clicking that ad, it shows the regular Target price at $399.99 as it has not officially dropped yet.

I was going to wait for a drop to pick up my new unit, but I grabbed the Amazon deal with a $50 card and 1600 points.

The consoles still sell very well at the current price points. Only thing that would bring the price down, IMO, is the launch of a new console. Also, rumored.

I hope this is just fanboy wishing. I love my 360 and think it has several years left in this console cycle.

I got three red rings last night. The light on my power brick stays orange when I turn on my xbox. I went to support, and their solution is to replace the power supply. Is there any reason to call xbox support as suggested to order a new power supply, or am I safe just picking up a new power brick for Gamestop?

I could see a price drop, but I'm not sure where the recent discounts/gift cards originated. However, the console sales have been good recently, so I'm not sure they really need a price drop (of course, what percentage of the recent sales figures can be attributable to the discount/gift card deals).

I've still got enough good games to play, new and older, that I'm not antsy for a new console. It takes a couple years to really learn to show off and utilize the power of a console, and I think we're in the sweet spot now. Granted, even if a new console were announced at this E3 we wouldn't see it for a while. Plus the console (really all of them) do so much more than just play games. However, I don't think I want them to try to make it into even more of a PC and do the 'upgrade' path.

I don't really care about 3d either. Part of that is sour grapes - it would cost me 1000+ to upgrade everything to where I could use it, and I don't want to do that, but as of now it is more of either a gimmick (at home) or an occasional treat (movie) for me. I'll wait till 3d is consistently used in a less intrusive fashion.

I just got a new Harmony 700 remote, which doesn't work my 360. Not a huge deal, because I usually use the controller, but a minor annoyance. Anyone have the same issue? My previous 676 did work the 360. (and there are definitely some other issues with the 700, or the new way Logitech manages the remotes, what with the web interface or the downloadable software. And one lets you change activity names, but the other gives you an extra device. And of course they are different accounts.)

Groucho 06-02-11 07:48 AM

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

Any Harmony remote should allow you to work the 360. It's just a standard UV interface.

I've never heard of a power supply causing 3 red rings. The xbox itself needs to be repaired/replaced.

Some do, but PC developers aren't pushing the envelope as much as they used to. Look at the gameplay footage for Battlefield 3 for an example of something that will have to be scaled way back for consoles.

Here are my expectations for the Next Gen (Nintendo not withstanding):

* 1080p
* 60 fps 2D / 30 fps 3D
* Higher resolution textures
* Higher polygon count
* Better effects (lighting/particles/etc).

I was under the impression that 1080p would drive up development costs quite a lot (they are already pretty high). Every game running at 60 fps consistently would be great, but that can be accomplished now and I don't see it being standard w/ new hardware. I am all for improvements, but it seems like graphical fidelity isn't going to improve to the next generation nearly as much as it did to this generation. Maybe A/I can be much improved?

AI is perfectly fine this generation, unless you're claiming that it's not realistic for a 1940's Los Angeles homicide cop to walk into a wall and keep trying to move forward instead of going through the door that's two feet away.

Ugh, is there anything in Nature that moves as slowly as a repaired 360 being shipped back to its owner via UPS? Mine was sent on Monday and won't get to Vegas until next Monday. Seriously, it took a day to travel from Mesquite to El Paso. Are they delivering it on a bike?

Paper airplane. They have a relay. Every 30 feet or so another person has to throw it again, but if someone isn't in place to pick it up/catch it and throw it again, you lose more time. Also, the box is marked fragile, but you can only hope they're careful with their throws.

Check to see if the vents on the power supply are blocked up with dust/hair. My 360 was getting red rings as well earlier this year but after a few minutes I would be able to play it again and thought all was well. I then looked up something on the internet to try and find out the error code and it started mentioning about it could be the power supply and etc. to turn it off/pull the plug and then reconnect. Long story short, despite my tv stand being open air and pretty clean I have the power brick in my hand and one side there are numerous holes which are for venting and they were covered in dust/hair. Basically my 360 was shutting down all the time for a good 2 week span becuase of this because the last 6 months since good as can be.

I called support. They said that it might be the power supply, but it could be the console. They started a service request, but told me that they couldn't do anything until I checked it with another power supply. I took it up to Gamestop and they tried it with some power supplies. Still has the three red rings. So now I have to call support again, cancel the service request for the power cord, and start a repair request for the console.

On the bright side, I'm still under warranty from when I last had it repaired a month and a half ago. The downside is that I was really into Mass Effect 2, and now I'm going to have to go at least three weeks without.

Speaking of, the Mass Effect 2 disc is still in my console, but I can't get it out. The tray won't eject, and I couldn't get the paperclip trick to work. Hope they return the game with my fixed/refurbished console.

You NEED to get the game out. You won't be getting the same console back.

Actually, you often do. My advice is to call service and tell them the disc is stuck in and that you want to make sure you get your own console back. That should work, even if it takes a little longer.

If all else fails, at least it's a super-cheap game stuck in there.

And if you do happen to get it back, I'm 99.9% sure the disc will be scratched the hell out of -- that was my personal experience.

Read some rumors about Microsoft releasing IPTV service for the Xbox (again?), with a service called Xbox Live Diamond. I'm almost sure we already talked about this, but this started to show again in some not too reliable sites, or at least not mainstream.

So, Xbox Live Diamond, all that's included in Gold plus TV channels. How much would you pay for that?

Not a blooming thing above my normal gold subscription. Honestly, I pay enough now :). But if my internet company wasn't terrible about bandwith, I might pay a little bit to get it. But then again, with my backlog for movies and games, I'm not sure I would even have time to enjoy it.

They already have ESPN, Hulu+, Netflix and Zune. Now diamond? Fragmentation!!! Box all of that shit up into one service at a decent price and I'll take it all and drop Dish Network.

Something tells me this IPTV stuff won't work without a regular provider, which I don't have. I probably can't be brought to care about it if all it adds is IPTV.

Odds Diamond and Family can't be mixed? 150%.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

Is a 250GB slim XBOX 360 worth it for 199$. There’s a special at Futureshop here in Canada that’s selling the 360 for 199$ until June 5th. First of all is this a catch from Microsoft? Mere DAYS away from their E3 press conference? Are they trying to get rid of these models before announcing something new on Monday? While it’s a really amazing deal, is it right for ME(See below)?

I have a PS3 and I love it to death! I play alot of games on it and watch alot of blu rays and even if I had a 360 I would probably buy the PS3 version of multiplatform games. Also I don’t care AT ALL for FPS games so I have no need for Halo series and the likes. The only games that interest me are the Gears of Wars games which look very fun. But again even as cheap as 200$ is for a console is it worth it for me? A mainly PS3 guy? And I’m also not a huge fan of multiplayer games so I doubt I’ll have the need for XBOX Live.

What other exclusives that ISN’T a shooter is out there that’s worth it?

Thanks!

I probably wouldn't. Fable, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Crackdown, and Left 4 Dead 2 I think are all pretty fun exclusives.

Kinect is better than Move. If you have kids, Kinect is a good reason to pick up a 360. Plus the obvious, network stability.

If you have the space for it, Kinect is much better than Move. I've never had "too close/too far" problems with Kinect. :shrug:

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

When implemented correctly, the Kinect works great for dance and exercise games. I don't think it works very well for anything else (so far, Child of Eden and The Gunstringer might change my mind about that). With the Move, I can play a quality FPS like Killzone 3 using a gun peripheral, play Heavy Rain with much more authentic movements, play light gun games with great accuracy, play strategy games like Ruse or Under Seige with gesture-based selections, and play core sports games like Tiger Woods or Top Spin 4 with varying degrees of success. To me, the Move wins hands down. But that's just my opinion as an owner of both systems and multiple games on both systems.
