Tversity works pretty well also.

Also, what version of WMP are you using? I hear the newest WMP adds some codecs, etc that allow more formats than previous.

actually, just did this one and it works even better. plays much faster than PlayOn with 360. thanks sniper.

if a game disc installs perfectly fine onto the harddrive, will i be safe from any defects that might be caused by scratches on the disc when i playthrough the game?

yes. as long as the disc can be recognized for the security check, you're fine. however, if the disc is scratched to the point that it is unrecognizable, then that would be an issue.

I would say yes. Unless it reports an error of some sort, the image should be fine. It's like a cd of music....even if there are a few scratches, it should rip fine to your portable device. Only the truly unsavory discs are going to have problems with installing to the 360.

However, if there does end up a defect, I'd be more worried that the hard drive might be corrupt :(

Funny you should say that. I actually got a "disc unreadable" error during a game of Red Faction the other night even though I had been playing from the hard drive for an hour or so. Not sure if it was a periodic DVD check that failed or a hiccup from the hard drive.

But, that's the only time I've ever experienced that before. My discs are all pristine condition anyway ;)

So I had an extra 360 I was going to trade in at Gamestop to get the $50 bonus...go to format the HD, and immediately after doing so I get the 3 red rings. Brother was going to trade his in as well...and the exact same thing happened to him, 3 red rings right after formatting (not sure that the format actually happened, since it took like 5 seconds).

This a known issue?

Yeah I bought Terminator:Salvation for $9 at Blockbuster's B1G1 USED sale yesterday and the disk could only get to 16% installed before a got an error message saying it couldn't read it. It was a clean disc other than what i thought was a minor blemish/scratch but apparently my 360 couldn't deal with it.

That's pretty rare for me to have USED disk issues. Either way I'm going to see if I can swap it for another one.

so far so good with the game i got on eBay. i just worry that later on in the game there will be an error or something. if i played for an hour without a problem, there still could be a problem further into the game, correct?

I've never heard of that. But why are you formatting the HD? You dont't need to trade that in. Especially if it's only a 20. Try unplugging the power supply and restart without the HD attached.

Anything is possible but most likely you have nothing to worry about.

To be safe i think he should ask Liver. Liver being a mod ought to mean he knows the most about video games.

Yes, there could be a problem. It's best to try and get your money back now before something goes bad.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines

I considered making a separate thread about this, but I'm not an attention whore so I decided to just post a note about it here for posterity.

So, today marks one year since I first bought an Xbox 360 and became a member of Xbox Live. Before then I had never owned or even played an Xbox of any kind. The only reason I decided to get one in the first place was because I had fallen in love (ok, obsession) with Fallout 3 on my PS3, and at the time the DLC was not available for that system and might never be, as far as anyone knew.

I quickly became an Xbox addict and after playing 2 or 3 games, I decided to set a goal for myself: 50,000 achievement points in one year. This was not out of any desire to prove to anyone that my e-package is bigger than theirs; it was purely a personal thing for fun and the "can I do it?" challenge.

Did I play some kiddie games in addition to "real" games to help reach my goal? Sure, but in the process I had some really fun experiences and discovered some fantastic games. Would I have given Viva Pinata a chance otherwise? Maybe not, and it's one of the most enjoyable and engrossing gaming experiences I've ever had. And anyone who wants to criticize the family games for being too easy can go take a shot at 100% completion on Monsters vs. Aliens -- another excellent, well-made game, by the way -- and then get back to me.

I had a thing against FPS games in the past as well, and I might not have given many of those a chance before this idea came up. There's no way I would have even considered playing shooters like Call of Duty 4 or Modern Warfare 2 (or probably even something like Bioshock) before this, and I'm certainly glad I did now for the obvious reasons.

Today, one year later, I stand at a gamerscore of 56,860. It's taken a lot of time and effort to get there, but I've had a blast in the process and I find myself wishing I had kept some type of blog or journal detailing the experience. Who knows, it could have led to some type of Julie & Julia book/movie deal, perhaps with Meryl Streep landing her next Oscar nomination for a spot-on portrayal of Major Nelson.

At any rate, I realize that this accomplishment means nothing to anyone other than myself, nor did I ever want it to. And before I get a lecture, I do know that achievements ideally shouldn't be the most important goal in game-playing, but for me they add a great deal of extra replay value and a whole new layer of challenges and accomplishments. It was a fun run, and I look forward to more of the same in the future -- but maybe not as rushed.

 It took me 5 years to get 56k.

That took me 2.5 years. In my first year, I barely broke 10k.

Yeah, I've had a 360 since launch and I'm at just above 50K. Congrats?

Wow, I've had my 360 since launch as well and sitting at around 25k I think. But then again I don't really look at the achievements as I'm going through a game. If I get them great, if I don't, no biggie.

Nice work MoviePage. I know I only do the achievements for myself. Weird sense of satisfaction once I hear that achievement sound pop up. I know there are some good "family oriented" games such as Viva Pinata. But how about so-so ones? I'm looking at Fusion Frenzy 2 and Cars which were okay, but it became to the point where I would rather play games for enjoyment rather than torture myself for a few hours to get easy achievement points. The achievements actually push me to play a game I like for a longer time like the Riddler challenges in Batman, or Modern Warfare on veteran.

So on the same topic, what achievements are everyone most proud of?

I've got to go with the six for EDF 2017. I loved that game, despite it's crappy graphics and utter cheesiness. Earning 1000/1000 on it takes a ridiculous amount of time and effort.
