They track all. Go to bungie.com and you can see your complete Halo stats (well, not Wars, but that's not them).
I'm hoping it's something cool. I'll probably log on again tonight to be on for the cutoff.

From Bungie:
One Final Hump is All That Remains
All good things come to an end and Halo 2’s days are now numbered. If you haven’t yet heard, Xbox LIVE support for Xbox Originals will be a thing of the past on April 15th, 2010. Sad times, but we’re planning on sending our baby out with a bang.
And we want you to be there for the explosive finale.
On the eve of Halo 2’s sunset, April 14th, Bungie will be heading back into Halo 2 in full force for one last Humpday against our beloved, BXR-abusing community. And we fully expect to get our asses royally kicked by the robotic techno-wunderkinds who have made Halo 2 their online home these last five years.
If you’ve yet to come to grips with a world without Halo 2 over Xbox LIVE, make sure you get out all of your frustrations by collectively teabagging our flailing dead corpses. We won’t even demand that you to rinse out your sweaty codpieces first.
As thanks for throwing down, we’re committed to granting everyone who plays with us on the 14th a [B]piece of visual flair for use in Halo: Reach multiplayer as a symbol of our gratitude. We’ll also be collecting a plethora of relevant stats and gifting plenty of other sweet prizes for players who take the time to throw down with us.
So, see you there (be gentle), and if it’s been a while since you’ve played Halo 2, or you’ve recently switched consoles or gamertags, make sure you fire up Halo 2 before you’re ready to play so you can re-download the title updates and free map packs you need to make the most of it. We’re hearing the full process takes a while and we wouldn’t want you stuck downloading while the rest of us are having fun.

Re: Halo: Reach - Fall 2010
also, something i didn't understand...while these players online were most likely far superior to me, they also seemed to have these powers that i surely didn't have with my Spartan or Elite.
they could soar in the air and shoot from very high altitudes above me and leap right onto me. they shot faster. some had laser beams (that i don't even remember being a usable weapon in 2) that i never saw lying around. i mean they didn't even show up on my radar half the time before they pummeled me relentlessly.
is that true of every online game experience?

Nope. That's Halo 2 at this point and why it won't be missed. Full of hackers and cheaters. While the laser sounds like the alien Beam Rifle, everything else is not part of the game.
I logged onto one Rumble Pit game, came in second, but it was clear #1 was lag-cheating.

Yeah, same here, got 2nd in Rumble Pit, but died inexplicably a bunch of times. (granted, I only got 2nd because there was clearly a lot of people just signing in for the item)

Unless you have friends over to play, pretty much. You can use Xbox Connect software to make it work. My friends and I used it for the original Halo since there was no online play for that one. It worked well enough.

So, with this Beta a week away (and correct me if my newb state to Xbox Live has me not knowing what I'm talking about) are we going to get a DVDtalk group together to play this?

I've played a few games tonight. I'm by no means a skilled Halo player and that's compounded by my preference for cooperative experiences.
It's not bad and I like the changes they've made. But get ready to have a learning curve with the changes to the default control scheme. I can't tell you how many times I tried to melee someone with B just to only change my grenade type.
Assassinations are fucking sweet now!
