Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I have been starting to build my DVD Collection back up again as well as collect a few video games. I usually buy 1 video game and 1 or two blu-rays or DVDs when I get paid. What do you like to collect more?

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I don't have any video games, so guess how I voted. ;)

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Hardly play video games that much anymore except for Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, so DVD's and Blu-Ray's for me.

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
You might get a pretty lopsided answer in this forum.
I loved gaming back when I was young - in the 8-bit and 16-bit days. Now that I'm in my 30's I still find them very interesting and am amazed at how much they have advanced. But, I have to admit I rarely play games at all anymore. I buy some titles here and there, but usually it's just to satisfy pangs of nostalgia and I rarely put in the time that's required to really enjoy them. With movies though I definitely enjoy re-watching them every once in a while, and often just like to have titles I've already seen playing in the background while I do other things... sort of keeps me company. Funny thing though... I really enjoy watching video game reviews, journalism and fan-made videos. I visit gametrailers.com almost daily. I just don't actually play the games. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I don't own a single video game, though I wish I still had my old Atari. :(
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Definitely DVDs.
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I dont say I collect DVDs or Blu-rays. I say I collect cinematic media. I have VHS, DVDs, Blu-ray, HD-DVD, and even MPEG-4 iTunes downloads. Anywho... I only have a few video games. I'm too busying watching movies to play games.

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Your thread topic implies quantity: "Do you have more of one or the other?"
The poll question implies quality: "Which do you like(prefer) to collect?" I love both, but seeing as it can take substantially more time to play and finish a video game (I'm about 70 hours into Dragon Age Origins and think I may be about 2/3rds of the way through), it's only logical that I'd be able to fit in watching several movies/tv shows over the span of playing a single game. Thus DVD/Blu-Ray wins out on quantity- always. As far as which I like better, I don't know if I can answer that question. I love watching DVDs, but it's a passive experience. I love playing video games, it's more immediate and visceral. They scratch different itches. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
DVD's & Blu-Ray's
I used to have a ton of video games, but over the years I've found that my time to play them has dwindled. After I hit that point, I sold off 75% of my entire collection and stop buying certain games if I didn't have the time to finish them. I've only kept the ones I can play over and over again. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
DVDs. I'm not nearly as big a gamer as I used to be. Hell, up until a couple of months ago, I didn't even own a system.

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Definately DVD's. I have a collection of over 2000 SD and am not about to upgrade to Blu Ray. I am very happy with my picture quality from the SD and my Panasonic EDTV. I am just not into gaming at all-
Happy Holidays y'all- |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Blu-rays mostly, even though i have alot of 360 Games
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
With video games I tend to sell them off as soon as I'm sure I won't play them again, Blu Ray's the same, but DVDs I just keep mounting up!
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Only DVD's - have never owned a video game.
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
DVDs...and VHS--still. Just last Wed. I bought a VHS of HEAVY METAL 2000 for $2.
No Blu-rays, no video games. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I had over 1,500 DVD's at one ponit but sold them off. Now I just buy Blu's that I love or kid movie fave's like Cars, Monster House, Up, Monster's Inc., etc... I have about 30 360 games and 25-30 Wii games (for the kids, I hate the Wii). My game buying has decreased because I would rather rent a game for a couple weeks for $8 and be done with it unless it's something that I can keep coming back to, like NHL10, COD's, Rock Band, etc... It just doesn't seem worth it to buy games when there are always so many new games coming out all the time. I try to not have a backlog because games get cheaper while they sit on the shelf, and nothing's worse than spending $50-$60 on a game that by the time you get around to playing it it sells for $20-30.

Easily DVDs and Blu-Rays.

I play more games than I watch movies, but I don't collect them. It's extremely rare that a game holds up over time, especially games since the 3D/realistic era began. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I don't collect video games, I play them. There are very few games I consider good enough to keep after I've finished them. So my "collection" of games isn't huge. A good movie I can watch over and over, so that is a collection. Also, I can get Blu-rays for $10-$15 a pop, whereas even with a good deal the cheapest I can get a game is about $40.

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
while i get more bang for my buck from games, i do have many, many more movies (dvd/BD).
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Movies. Lately, my free time has been about 90% games 10% movies but it's still movies. I love them immensely. There's not nearly enough good games.

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I don't collect games at all. I only have a handful, versus hundreds of movies.

Anyway, I haven't bought a DVD for myself in over a year but probably buy a new game once every couple of months. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
With the Redbox and Netflix streaming I have bought maybe 3 dvd's and blu-rays in the last 2 years.
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
My movie to game ratio is probably 10 to 1.

I was thinking the same thing. I looked around the other forums, but I didn't see this thread posted on any of them with the "Moved" icon. It is very surprising that the poll is so heavily skewed towards DVDs on a video game board.

Heh. I am the same way. I check Gametrailers, IGN, and Gamespot daily although I don't really play that many games anymore. I used to be a very hardcore gamer in my youth. I would frequently put in 10+ hour gaming marathons. My record was when I played Final Fantasy VII for nearly 30 hours straight when I was in college. I was so obsessed with it, it nearly cost me my whole college career. Starting about 5-6 years ago though, something happened but I don't really know what. I just started caring less and less about gaming. It isn't because I don't have free time anymore because I have lots of free time since I am unmarried, no kids, and have an easy job. It isn't because I am "growing up" because I am still obsessed with comic books. My video game "spark" just is not there any more. I have only played four new games this whole year long. But I still like to visit gaming sites like Gametrailers, IGN, and Gamespot and of course this message board. I don't really know why though. So to answer the poll: I am much more of a DVD person nowadays. |

This was originally posted in the top "DVD Talk" forum when I first replied to it. It was moved sometime after that.

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Definitely blu-rays. Since they are so much dhorter than games, there are much easier to re-watch than re-play.
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
Considering I buy 2-3 new games a year...
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I still buy more movies/tv shows than video games - in both number and the amount of money spent.
Mostly since videogames are a solitary activity I do by myself when I have nothing else to do, while I can watch and share dvds/blurays with other people. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I'm not really sure the ratio, but I kind've go on kicks from one to another. Most of my dvd purchases are TV on dvd. Sometimes I'll go on a binge and just need to finish a series, and usually that will get me ancy to play a game again and not even look at a dvd for awhile. Conversely, after finishing Fallout 3 I didn't want to touch a game for a month.

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I think I originally posted this in the Other Talk so I can balance out the two but somehow it got moved. I do by more Movies a year but now I am going to try and balance everyone. Every two weeks, at least 1 video game, 1 TV Show Season and 1 blu-ray

Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I have:
~800 DVD's 102 HD DVD's 95 Blu-ray's 25 PS3 Games 24 Xbox 360 Games 6 Wii Games So yeah, movies. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I don't collect either anymore. I have a very modest DVD collection (less than about 50 dvds including boxsets) that is a holdover from when I thought it would be neat to built a library, and I only own 3 360 games. I rarely if ever buy dvds now. I bought the Farscape complete set that just came out, but that's the only dvd I bought in the last 2 years if not better. I use gamefly now, and when it wasn't that I would buy a game, play it, and sell it.
I think it's neat to look at other peoples collections (I love the HT setup thread), but I don't personally want a lot of stuff anymore. Owning a lot of things just doesn't really serve a purpose for me. |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
When I got my first job in the early 80's I bought a good stereo setup and started collecting LP's and storing them in plastic sleeves...then along came CD's.
I bought a DVD player in 1999 and started collecting DVD's. 1,500 discs later the DVDs that I paid $30 for could be found everywhere for as low as $2.99....then along came BluRay. As I stated above, I'm only buying the one's "I love/must have" and kid's movies. With a video game system, you know going in that the system has a limited life before something bigger & better comes along. I rarely sell games, so I resorted to renting them unless the multiplayer is great or the game can go on & on, like NHL/Tiger Woods/Rock Band, etc... |
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
1000+ DVD/Blu/HDDVD 20 or so video games.
|
Re: Which Do You Collect More? DVDs/Blu-Rays or Video Games?
I spend most of my time/money buying on Blu-rays now, sometimes DVDs. It's been a while since I did very much gaming, but I still go through my spurts where I'm really addicted to a game or am really in the mood to play. I'm actually in the mood to play some video games, but I've had too big of a viewing backlog to catch up on.
