What isn't great about Left 4 Dead?
The game is fast, tense, and very very well designed. I also love the 'camp' atmosphere, with the dorky movie posters and character dialogue.
Still, I will admit the game doesn't have much lasting appeal in terms of single player gameplay, but I think it's one of the best multiplayer experiences out there - especially versus mode. I play it with friends a lot (probably gone through each campaign, No Mercy especially, several hundred times), and it never seems to get old. The game plays differently every time, and there's plenty of strategy to think about, especially when playing as infected.
The sequel is going to build on the best parts of the original. New special infected, melee weapons, more dynamic maps, etc. I'm really excited!

I haven't played vs mode so I can't comment on that. The funny thing is I absolutely love Nazi Zombies in COD:WOW. I like how the tension heightens round after round until your teamates (if they are good) are all hunkered down in a corner mowing down wave after wave. There is a lot of strategy involved even on the original map such as when to use the mystery box or go upstairs.
With L4D, it was just point, shoot over and over. Got boring for me.

Lol, talking about video games in a gaming forum is trolling? I'm not trying to stir up anything. I am legitimately curious why the game received such acollades.

If you don't think L4D requires any strategy, you need to play it again at a higher difficulty setting.

I played it a few times and just didn't get it. If I'm going to spend $60 on an FPS, it needs to have some serious content and L4D just didn't do it for me.
(Mind you, I'm not that big of an FPS fan and the last three FPSs I bought were Halo 3, COD4, and MW2).

Maybe you're playing on too easy a difficulty level. When I'm playing on co-op, we definitely have to throw together strategies as to who's going to alert the hordes, where we're going to stash all the gas cans and propane tanks to make a stand, who's going to watch which entrances, when we're going to use molotovs and pipe bombs, how we're going to tackle a witch that's blocking our path and so on and so forth. The way you describe your experience, it sounds like you're just running through on easy and mowing down everything, which I'll agree can be a little boring.
And if you're a fan of Nazi Zombie WatW, survival mode in L4D sounds like it's basically the same thing, only a lot more intense, I imagine. The lighthouse map is awesome, with multiple tanks attacking at once, and smokers grabbing your team from all directions. Very intense.

That sounds very different from my multiplayer experience. If all we did was run and shoot we were dead. You have to work together, plan strategies, etc.

With a traditional shooter in co-op mode, you'll have an experienced guy (or perhaps YOU are that experienced guy) who will know the map and say things like "Hunter around the corner here" or "Ammo stash is behind that door". With L4D, nobody knows this because it's different every time.
Playing online the first couple of weeks was funny because you'd have "know it alls" trying to predict what was coming, and then be shocked when they were wrong.

I don't think the game is "beyond reproach" because it has zombies. That's a bit ridiculous. The is well-loved for a number of reasons, including:
- Great co-op play that encourages teamwork and communication
- Dynamic levels that change every time you play
- Pure gameplay. No cutscenes or tutorial levels. Just jump in and start shooting

L4D is about as fun as it gets for video games as far as i'm concerned.

^ Modern Warfare 2? Realistic?
Awesome game though it is, it's a total arcade shooter. There isn't an ounce of realism in it.
Left 4 Dead is a good game, but it's best played online with 3 or more friends of yours. Voice chat + strategy is a must. Lets just say, there's a very good reason why both L4D and L4D2 on PC get sold in 4 packs.

When people say "realistic" I think more akin to simulators.
But yeah, it takes place on earth with an occasional post-apocalyptic vibe and no crazy weapons (though the co-op mode where you bomb the hell out of enemies from a bomber while your teammate tries to run to the target is borderline crazy). In terms of actual "realism" though, it's about on par with Halo.

Haha this thread is hilarious. People are getting crazy defensive because someone asked an honest and poignant question about a game. I actually was thinking the same thing as I had never played it before and have noticed the rising popularity of the game.
It was a question of curiosity, it's not like he asked why "fucking morons love this shitty game".

Yeah, he should have posted in the original thread so someone could accuse him of making a threadcrap since he doesn't care for the game.

I love the game. However single player is very weak. It just doesn't feel right. When I first purchased the game I jumped into single player, and after playing for 20 minutes or so I was sure I had wasted 60 bucks.
However the minute I jumped into online coop with people, it was a completely different experience. It's a very social game, and while yes Live has a lot of dicks, this game is just tremendously more enjoyable as a coop game. Frankly, that's how the game was sold. From the beginning it was sold as 8 player COOP! Now, technically it's only 4 player coop, but still.
However, I will say I do not like that they don't give you the option in the game to talk to the other team. Sure, it can lead to trashtalk, but leave the option in there. I have set up 8 player party games before, and it's just fun to talk to the other team as you're killing each other. Make it a button press to turn it on and off or something.
