This. I'm not even sure where my headphones are. Why on earth would I use them when playing with random people? Like I give a shit what any of them say. And after 10+ years of online gaming I've never really encountered a random group that used any sort of coordination so what's the point?

Makes my Xbox Live experiences a lot more enjoyable.

I haven't had any major issues, but I don't play online much, let alone FPS games that tend to be the worst. I played a lot of Street Fighter 4 online and didn't have many problems either.

Oddly enough, I play a decent amount of Team Fortress 2 on PC and the shit talking isn't very bad. It's funny that it all moved over to XBox Live, whereas 5-10 years ago this sort of thing was rampant on PC.

Well, first I suck at MP, so I sometimes understand all the hate. ;)

A couple of weeks ago I started playing Left 4 Dead and after finishing all the campaigns I tried MP. I was kicked out in 3 of 4 of the matches I joined. Either because I didn't know what I was doing or because I wasn't using a mic. Good times.

But, for some reason I've had a good luck playing Gears, it's really rare that I play with someone that's acting like an asshole. And even more a lot of the people that play with me later add me as friends! The other day even two girls added me to their FL. I was checking my friends and though: "look Giantrobo has a new outfit", but then I checked again and saw that it wasn't him.

Yeah, this too.

Echoing what others have said - you have to populate your friends list with good folks. There are a bunch on here (well except for that Dragonfly sucker and his hogging of power weapons ;) :P) and many other places online. Check out the Good Game Network to get a list of clans that all abide by specific codes of behavior.

Yeah, it really is odd that people feel the need to act out in an online game. Maybe my mother has drilled respectfulness into me, but I couldn't imagine saying some of the things I've heard to random people. It just makes no sense to me. But then again go to practically any message board that isn't here, and you'll see the same stuff.

Respectfulness isn't what I drilled into your mother.

is one of the many childish things you might hear on XBL.

See you are wrong there. That is about 100x more witty than the standard insults on Live.

To be fair, I did actually listen to what he said and turned his words around instead of just spewing things from my racist & homophobic soundboard.

Exactly. That is why you have at least 150 IQ points on the folks i normally mute.

I always found it best to go with whatever was being said. Someone said they had sex with my mom then I would say we should compare notes as I bang my father quite often. Insult yourself and they become powerless.

That is my exact tact as well.

"You are such a queer!"

"How did you know? Wanna hook up?"

"Don't worry man...it's not gay if we just have phone sex. Shoot me your number." :)

Another one I love is "Your mic was cutting out, I didn't hear that at all." by about the 4th time they usually give up. I use to do that in between rounds on Gears all the time. Usually right before we went back into the game and it cut them off.

That's a good one for message based harrassment as well. You get a message, like I often would for kicking douchebags out of games in Gears, I'd send one back saying it was completely blank and then block them from sending messages to me. rotfl

This isn't unique to XBL, though it might be a bit more prevalent there than PC or PSN.

I used to play a bit of Warhawk with random people, but it eventually just became awful as people 1) got a lot better than me and 2) turned into proportionately bigger asshats. Now I play it once a week with a bunch of likeminded, good humored and equally terrible folks on the forum. It's so much nicer.

Find some friends on here and you'll have a lot more fun.

Re: Xbox Live - Proof that Anarchy is Bad

once you get a good group of people to play with, MP can be a blast. The problem is when people go to a new game, and some want to stay in the old game. Because of this, most of my online friends are still in Rainbow Vegas 2...so I might have to hit up the dvdtalk xbox gamertag list....

Re: Xbox Live - Proof that Anarchy is Bad

You know whats funny though is that everytime I think it is hopeless something happens to remind me that not everyone is useless on there. When Signed In was featured for the Community playdate and some of our gamertags were on the dashboard I really only had 2 people that I had to block out of the 200 or so friend requests and countless messages on top of that. Also we played for hours and didn't have much problem either. So all is not lost there are some good ones out there.

Yeah, I don't play online very much due to the immaturity of most of the gaming community.

I tried playing online once but found the experience much l ike what's been presented here. No thanks. I can play with my kids at home and do just fine!

It's all in good fun when I play online. Who cares if someone's calling you names? Just mute them. I guess when there's a team aspect to it, it could get old (like in the mentioned example), but most of the modes on CoD, I wouldn't need to talk to teammates anyway.

If you're an asshole, I ignore you, and simply report you after the game. If i'm not playing with friends I barely play online anymore, it's hard to find decent, mature people to play these days.

I rarely have a problem.. but what sucks about these guys is that once things don't go there way they bounce.. they all of a sudden lose connection.

While I LOVE Xbox Live, there are two things I hate:
1.) Those jackasses who yell, swear, insult, and are just general asshats.
2.) People who play with their sound systems so loud all you can hear during your entire game is their background noise.

Other than those two things I generally don't have problems playing with a group of random people. That being said there's always at least one of 1 or 2 present in each game. :-\. The one nice thing about that is you can usually weed out the morons and find a couple of good people to add onto your friends list.

So no comment at all on me giving you shit?

I don't have that many issues with multiplayer any more. Also, like someone said earlier it also is really dependent on the game. When i played Phantom Dust on the original Xbox i never once ran into someone rude. It was primarily a Japanese audience but it was awesome.

Same thing with Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Catan. All those games draw a pretty laid back and much more mature audience.
