Xbox Live - Proof that Anarchy is Bad
Last weekend reminded why I rarely play games online with Xbox Live. I finished playing the single player campaign of COD:WOW and was curious about this mode called Nazi Zombies.
I was hooked immediately. Brilliant game mode, although I could find no documentation, and I still don't understand all the mechanics like what the powerups do and such.
In my 3rd game, this asshole prick starts ragging on me because I am not a pro player. I received a barrage of some of the foulest hate fueled rhetoric. This was way beyond fun game trash talk. He also encouraged the other teamates to let me die and not revive me. He wanted to know where I lived so he could come kick my ass. lol When I mentioned Texas, the lamest "steers and queers" comment was applied. What an ignorant immature dolt.
I called the guy a piece of $h*t and finally left. I couldn't enjoy the session especially if no one would revive me. Sadly, this experience is all too common. I've met some of the trashiest pieces of human crap on online games. A few months ago, Wombat, co-host of CAGcast, was a featured player on Xbox live. He received dozens of the most hate spewed angry replies. The replies were so awful that a Xbox rep was featured on the show to address the issue.
I think it's a reflection of the dark nature in people which comes to fruition in a virtual environment that carries no consequences for their actions. I can imagine the same thing would occur in real life if anarchy ruled.

That is why I refuse to play in games with random people.
What makes what you posted even better is when you hear some squeaky voice, pre-pubescent 13 year old kid spouting all that swearing and hate/trash talk. I've heard some of the worst language from kids.. things that would make a drunken sailor blush like his grandmother had just walked in the room and heard him saying foul things.
DVDTalk has a large number of people you can probably set up a gaming night to really have a fun time playing online games. I'm sure people would be willing to play with you and make an enjoyable night.

The funniest thing about this behavior is that it spreads to the most innocuous of games, such as Uno. "What's up with that reverse, you *&*#(#*$%*???"

Re: Xbox Live - Proof that Anarchy is Bad
I know how you feel. I always play online alone with the mics muted or with my cousin. Well once we decided to play a little Left 4 Dead with 2 other random guys. Well my cousin isn't the best player in the world, and we had just got to the first save room. The 3 of us had gotten in the save room, but my cousin was swarmed by zombies. I said ok I'm going to go save him, another guy chimed in no don't he is a idiot let him die. I was like no then we have to do the whole level over again. Then he started cursing at me calling me a retard, and if I left the room he was going to hunt me down and end my life. I couldn't take it anymore and dropped out of the game. It's really hard to find good people to play, unless your friends already.

Mute random people, add some of these people to your friends list and thank me later.

I almost never play with random people, but last week I gave it a shot a couple times. I'd downloaded Scrabble and there was no way I was going to be able to get games going with just my friends list. I probably played a half dozen games and all the people were decent or quiet. It was a nice change of pace from the usual experience when playing with strangers.

I think a lot of that has to do with the types of games you play. I've met plenty of random people that are still on my friends list, but those are from games like Commando: WotB, Overlord, Gauntlet, and the like.
It's those highly competitive, violent, action games that bring out the idiot in the individual (well, highly exasperate it at least). Blame anonymity. Play with people you know. If not from here, there are plenty of gaming groups out there that get around these issues.

The best is when some ass clown takes the time to actually send you a message about how much you suck or how badly they'd kick your ass. What can you do? I just "ignore" them while online and limit my community gaming to a few select games.

Battlefield 1943 is the way to go. No team chat should make for chaos, but it actually works well, is quick fun and you get no hate spew. Other than that, I just play individual death matches, that way, when I suck it makes them happier and I get no extra grief.
...and if you know who the asshat was from your recently played list, you can report him to Live and he'll get a warning or suspension. Sounds like he deserves it.

The only reason I picked up Left 4 Dead was to play with people I know. I tried that random thing and it sucks. The odds of at least one jackoff in the group is too high. I tried to get through games of something as simple as Hasbro Game Night on XBL with strangers and its impossible. Everyone rage quits when they start losing and the whole game gets canceled. I only had one game completed with two cool ladies from Canada out of 10 tries. The only good online experience I have had with random people was 1 VS 100, but that is mainly because they can't talk and if they quit it doesn't matter.

Pretty much friends only for me online most of the time. It's rare that I'll jump on and play with strangers, especially in a situation where we're all talking to each other.
As pinata said, there's plenty of places out there to find people looking to play games for fun. (Including this very one right here.)

I still play online all the time but I can't recall the last time I actually had my mic plugged in. I also have all but my friends muted so I don't hear a peep from the unwashed masses. I have to deal with two pre-teens everyday in real life so I sure don't want to listen to any online.

Re: Xbox Live - Proof that Anarchy is Bad
I'll admit I lose my temper from time to time on Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but mainly at jackasses that employ really underhanded moves. I don't mind losing to a solid player, but picking the same three characters over, corner trapping them, and snidely chuckling when you win just spoils the experience.
Sadly, this becomes a problem when you play Ranked later in the evening and the same people keep popping up.

Well feel free to add me as a friend. Just like in Warcraft I cannot stand pickup groups. Not a pro player by any means but love good company with others who share similar interests. I just got L4D the other week and would to check it out with you.

i only play with people i know or mute the chat. if you identify the person who was abusive, you should report them to xbox live.

People generally suck. People behind a veil of anonymity suck harder. Pre-teen and teenage boys are the worst, just be sure to report any that are being asshats, then you'll hopefully never have to play with them again.
