The only immersive experience that wouldnt seem gimmicky would be a matrix style port in your head lol

I go more for the eXistenZ-style bio-ports that, at least when Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh are around, become extra erogenous zones.

At least you would see less of that cheap Halo jumping evasive shit in FPS's if they had to REALLY jump like a bunny for 10 minutes.

Heck, I don't even want to use the Wiimote for most of the games!

^^^Agreed I only had a Wii for about 6 months. I loved the heck out of Smash Bros., but nothing Wiimote-centric every really grabbed me.

Re: Where are the next gen games?

Games from this gen that I don't feel I could have experienced last gen:

LittleBigPlanet (anyone who says otherwise never built anything)
Wii Sports
Wii Shooters (Metroid Prime, RE4, etc.)
Uncharted (The first time I've truly felt like I was playing a movie)
Flower (maybe possible on earlier systems, but a new experience for me)
Fallout 3 (again, the scale and scope...but I guess you could make a case for GTA3)
Tiger Woods Wii
Bioshock (an immersive world that requires the graphical horsepower)
Half-Life 2 (same)
Portal (an original experience...a first person puzzler)
Mirror's Edge (first person platformer?)
Rock Band (yeah, it was ported to PS2, but the DLC focus makes it a current gen platform)

FPSs haven't done anything interesting since the first HALO
Driving games haven't improved since Gran Turismo (though I do love Burnout Paradise).
Sports Games (other than Tiger on Wii) are about the same

I haven't played Mass Effect, but I'm guessing that it would qualify based on what I've seen.

Portal seems to me like something that could have been done in previous generations.

Yeah, it's been mentioned twice but really it's something that could have been done on the PS1 or the N64 with all gameplay intact. Half-Life 2 (also mentioned) was ported to the original Xbox.

Re: Where are the next gen games?

So to shift the discussion a bit how would you rate the different generational leaps?

To me I think:

1. Atari -> NES This I think is the greatest generational leap. We went from games that consisted of one screen to games that actually took place in an entire world. We also saw the advent of saving your progress in a game and the cross becoming standard. This was also the jump that saved home gaming.

2. SNES Genesis -> N64 PS1 Mainly for true 3D capability. We had the advent of 3D platforms, camera control, analog stick. Many many breakthroughs

3. N64 PS1 -> PS2 GC XBOX Saw the advent of the dual analog control, increased graphic capabilities to the point that the 3D significantly increased our ability to be immerrsed in the world. The biggest graphical jump IMO.

4. NES, Master System -> SNES, Genesis Again, the biggest innovation here is the graphical jump. I really wanted to rate this higher due to nostalgia but there probably wasn't as many innovations.

5. GC, PS2, XBox -> XBox 360, Wii, PS3 The graphical jump here is very minimal (in the Wii's case almost nonexistent) I do agree with the article that there were only a few innovations. Some of the games have been revolutionary like Little Big Planet, and Wii sports but a lot is almost the same as last gen. Of course this generation is far from over and innovation seems to be coming with all sorts of motion controllers and companies trying to make genres to sell. I think the absolutely biggest impact this generation has been the independent small downloadable games arena. That to me is the most revolutionary thing to come out. How many awesome risky games have we gotten just because of the low cost of development and high distribution that's available because of PSN, XBLA, WiiWare, and Steam.

Could it? I would think older systems would've had real trouble with things like a first-person perspective constantly accelerating in a ceiling to floor portal loop. Given some of the slow-down in older games for things that I'd guess require less processing power, I assumed Portal couldn't have been done on old hardware without really limiting what you could do with it. I'm certainly not an expert on the technical side of things, though, and could be completely wrong.

Re: Where are the next gen games?

People saying that Bioshock couldn't be done in previous gens must have never played System Shock 2 or even the original Deus Ex.

I guess that really isn't surprising considering this forum leans heavily on console games and generally ignores PC games. Up until this gen, PC gaming has always been way ahead of console gaming. For whatever reason though, PC gaming has slowed way down this gen.

As mentioned by a previous poster, Half-life 2 is actually a last-gen game that came out on PC in 2004. It wasn't until this console gen that console gamers got to truly experience it (the original Xbox port was butchered and could barely handle it on the lowest settings). Same thing with Doom 3... the Xbox could barely handle it. With F.E.A.R. the Xbox couldn't handle it at all.

Another big enhancement at this stage was online multiplayer. Xbox Live was born and the early days of the PSN started as well. One of the first playstation multiplayer games was Twisted Metal Black (awesome). This was a huge upgrade. Sound was also improved as the Xbox was capable of in game 5.1 channel audio.

Re: Where are the next gen games?

The big jump here was consoles having a user interface that you go into before you play a game. Before, any UIs were either not supposed to be accessible (I'm thinking Neo Geo) or were only there for initial setup (Xbox and PS2).

Now, they're here, and firmware upgrades are the norm: the console has become much more like a PC, with each console really only getting its full potential if its hooked up online.

By next gen, this integration will be complete, with it being common of sending in-game videos to YouTube, posting in-game screenshots to Facebook, etc. These are things that are being done now, but only by a few games.

I don't think the physics in the game are that unique to require the extra power of the current 360/PS3. I imagine it could have easily been done at the expense of graphics, not to mention there isn't very much else going on (like AI). The game succeeds because of the concept and the humor more so then any technical prowess.

I really can't make myself care about this argument. In most cases I'm happier with better looking, better performing versions of games that I like. If next-gen equals me furiously masturbating a wii-mote (or some other motion sensing bs) then "next gen" games can blow me.

re: Portal

The environment isn't very taxing either. You have 19 enclosed 'rooms' with plain walls and nothing going on. Not a huge amount of enemies on screen at once. The 20th level is another story but I definitely think Portal could have been done on the original xbox.

In a meeting last week with a game developer at the Tokyo Game Show, I asked them if they were planning on trying to incorporate in-game video capture into their title. The type you see in Halo 3.

The answer was interesting and, I believe, accidental.

"We'd love to have video capture in our game, but why work on something that the platform holder is already developing," said the developer, who I'm keeping anonymous to cover for his accidental slip-up.

The idea of a universal, platform-level video capture system for games seems like a good idea, and one that fits in nicely with the plans that Microsoft has for the Xbox 360.

Would that really be a big deal though? I know, YouTube puts GameFAQs to shame with the "strategy guides" that are posted, but personally I don't have this compelling urge to upload videos of myself playing games.

I cant imagine posting videos of myself gaming but have you seen some of the GTA multiplayer shootouts on youtube? Some of those are pretty epic.

:hscratch: Who said the video was of you playing games?

Halo 3 has an in game recorder. It records every match and you can go back and watch entire games from anywhere on the map. This would be an awesome feature to have standard.

Re: Where are the next gen games?

SF4 has limited replays of matches that users can watch on the PS3 version, which is pretty cool.

I meant my gameplay. I just don't see it being that big of a deal, but if others think it's great, more power to them.
