I was about to post the same thing. On the other hand, how game changing is a new level on a shooter or a new dungeon in an RPG?

I agree. If my The Maw answer is acceptable because it adds extra, optional levels, so too is Rock Band with its extra, optional songs.

It allows customization of the game that, honestly, without it the game wouldn't be anywhere near as good.

Rock Band wouldn't be as awesome as it is if it wasn't for the constant stream of DLC available to keep it fresh and interesting to the owner.

Technically, horse armor changed the game as now your horse was protected from arrows and shit.

But in Malibu Stacy Horse Adventures the "new hat" didn't do anything. Hell, it was just like the old hat.

Perhaps, but you have to play a new pattern of notes for each instrument. The mechanic is the same for the DLC, but the challenge for each song is different. I think it is more similar to adding new levels. The mechanics of the game play stay the same (you still jump, swing sword, etc. vs. hitting 5 notes and strumming), but the challenge is different (have to jump and run in different places and fight different enemies, etc. vs. having to hit different notes at different times with different beats).

Which also changes gameplay: enemies are now easier to kill. Or your strategy changes. If the DLC was a cape for your dude, and the cape didn't do anything, that doesn't change the game.

A funny answer but it will cost you dearly in points.

I had no freaking clue how to answer this one, so I took this one off. :)

Technically then in that case the cape does change the game because the game is different with and without the cape.

I mean, I can see your point, but I think your distinction of what constitutes "game-changing" isn't very well thought out.

I think this would have been a better Sheep question, because in the question it seemed that you were asking for something that changed the experience of playing the game on a scale more than downloadable armor, a hat, etc. Something like new levels, a new ending, new missions that change the storyline, etc.

To me it seemed obvious: nothing purely cosmetic. Maybe "game-changing" wasn't the best term to use.

Yeah, this question was dumb. Fallout 3 was like the only right answer because the DLC actually extended the storyline.

It's bullshit that Rock Band isn't a wrong answer.

Re: (Reverse) Sheep Round 9 — Wolves at the door

I think if the mechanics of the game or the ending doesn't change, it can't be considered "game-changing" DLC.

Otherwise it's all DLC that just augments the core playing experience. It doesn't change it.

pinata242 08-20-09 09:14 AM

Re: (Reverse) Sheep Round 9 — Wolves at the door

Typically DLC extends the game, it doesn't change the original ending. It may add another ending, but it doesn't change what was there.
