Re: July NPD Numbers
So yeah, everyone's going down. Xbox is the one that looks better.
Wonder if there's going to be some time in the near future when the Xbox 360 keeps selling more than the Wii (I know they sold more the month Halo 3 was released).
Starting tomorrow good times for everybody I guess. I already have a few preorders: MW2, Uncharted 2, Batman and I'm planning on ordering AC2:SE pretty soon. I'll get the Halo game and FIFA 10, I may get GH5, Rock Band Beatles, some others. I'm resisting the urge to get Madden, so many sales...

Re: July NPD Numbers
2- People are holding off for the PS3 Slim/Price drop announcement.
If that happens, get back to me about the NPD numbers after one month. It wouldn't surprise me if said announcement would include phasing out the PS2 and including PS2 BC on the PS3 Slim.

yeah, but the DS gets pretty damn good games and it's cheap. the PSP is still fairly expensive for a portable and it doesn't seem to have many quality games coming out for it. that could be just because i don't follow it as much, but that's my perception.

I know for awhile the PSP was always outselling the PS3. That may have changed this year, but overall the PSP has sold a lot of units. Games don't seem to sell for it, but lots of people have picked up the hardware.

Both the DS and the PSP are easy to hack, you don't even need to crack open the case. And the iso's are very easy to get. Obviously not the only reason people are getting these but I'm sure it's a factor. Plus they are a lot cheaper than the consoles.

What surprises me is that there are that many people out there that:
1. Want a PS2 but somehow don't already own one.
and
2. Are purchasing a new unit when there surely has to be a ton of cheap units on the secondhand market.
I mean, I can understand that people still want to play the unit, and that some for whatever reason still didn't have one. But a whopping 100K plus each month are just now adopting a 9-year-old system that has over 100 million units already floating around?

Re: July NPD Numbers
The only rumor about that would be the BestBuy ad, which ended up being just a temporary price reduction. But if it indeed does get a price cut, I don't think it will stop the PS3's momentum. The $299 PS3 would still offer much more than the 360 Elite at the same price (Blu-Ray, WiFi, Rechargeable controllers, free online, Exclusives not available on PC) and the people that wanted to buy a cheap 360 already have the Arcade as an option.

Re: July NPD Numbers
Damn. From last year, the Wii and PS3 are down by roughly 50%. PSP and PS2 are up a little and DS and 360 are about the same. On the game front, the top ten sellers in July 2008 sold about 2.5 million copies. The top ten for last month sold about 2 million. Still, summer numbers are pretty irrelevant to total sales, so a good holiday season could still end up with the industry seeing some growth in 2009.

Re: July NPD Numbers
Wii Fit maybe, but MGS4 wasn't even in the top 10 games last July. Either way, comparing current sales to the previous year is the common metric for gauging the health of the industry. You can say that the last three months have been down because last year had x, y and z games, but that doesn't mean the numbers aren't bad. It just helps explain why they're bad.

Re: July NPD Numbers
What I find fascinating is that Nintendo found a way to actually increase the price of a system (DSi) and still sell more than any other system.

I don't think THAT many people are waiting for the PS3 Slim. I would bet it's release will result in a 1 or 2 month increase, and then fall back to their regular sales figures.
