Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

Additionally, should the existence of a title in one form necessarily preclude it from appearing in the other?

I have Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Galaga in XBLA. When they are released on Game Room, I can't see myself rebuying them, even though they would look cool in there. I wouldn't mind a way to put a Galaga cabinet in my arcade, but have it launch the XBLA version (and take me out of "Game Room") instead.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

I looked at Game Room briefly and didn't really care for it. Those all felt like really really old retro titles; are there any planned releases on it that are somewhat more recent?

These arcade titles from the 90's or so can probably make more money by doing some slight enhancements and releasing them through regular XBLA.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

My issue with Game Room isn't the games, but rather the quality of the emulation. I can't see myself ever buying a game unless the quality of emulation improves dramatically.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

I'm sure I will purchase games here and there in Game Room where I don't already own them on the 360 (or Virtual Console/Wii collections). I don't really have a problem with the emulation...my problem is in the quality of the titles. Using the first 30 titles as a basis, I have to give the quality a C- or D+ at this point. I agree that our existing XBLA games (the arcade ports) should give us access to the arcade machines or unlock them but maybe that is too adventurous for the Game Room app at this time.

We'll see how it plays out, I do look forward to some more interesting games (if nothing else so I can go further with some of the achievements. Having bought two games only gets you so far) and see if this app improves in time. I honestly hope it does but don't see it currently.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

I agree with Kedrix. The first round of games weren't good at all. I bought Centipede out of nostalgia and because the cabinet looks awesome. Nothing else appealed to me. I found Asteroids really hard to view comfortably (though playing with the settings would probably help), and Tempest was completely unplayable without using the dial control. Why they thought anyone would pay $3 for a single 2600 game is beyond me -- I ignore free iphone games every day that are many, many times better and more polished (not to mention way more portable and accessible). I'd pay $3 for a Ms Pac Man or Burger Time Cabinet. I'd pay for some later ones like Spy Hunter on NBA Jam as well. But $3 for Adventure or Yar's Revenge is asking a little too much of most savvy consumers.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

The game selection obviously isn't good right now, but I think the emulation quality is a bigger issue long-term. Better game selection will come around (eventually) but I don't think better emulation will, which is why I consider it to be a bigger issue.

If selection was the only issue and emulation wasn't an issue, then I'd buy some games eventually. If the emulation is poor, though, I won't be buying any games.

While i always like things cheaper, i didn't mind paying 3$ for Yar's Revenge and the little avatar to go wandering through my arcade.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

What specifically is wrong with the emulation? I get that control schemes don't always port well, but I didn't notice any glaring issues with the functioning of the games I bought.

Um, let's not bring up the "free" mascots that come with the purchase on the first day. It's a bit of a sore subject for me.

:)

A shame really since the Centipede mascot is by far the coolest. ;)

You mean of the mere mortal mascots that Red Baron transcends, right?

I can't wait to add Night Stalker's to the arcade in 2 weeks. I don't care if it's the Intellivision guy or a bat or a robot, it's going to rule.

Man, I just checked out Final Fight and I am REALLY impressed. If you want to emulate an old arcade game, that is how it's done. It really puts the Game Room to shame, and it's only essentially $4 more than it would be there (as we know we'd never get two games for the price of one). I didn't buy it yet, mostly because it bothers me so much to not have anything to buy when those rare, occasional XBLA sales of decent games happen. I'm not sure I can wait though. The thought of playing these games with my wonderful (if rarely used) Tournament Edition SFIV Stick is pretty enticing.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

I went ahead and bought Final Fight. It really is such a great presentation of an arcade classic. It really has everything you'd ever want in an arcade port : Perfect emulation, optional graphic filters, cabinet presentation, remixed or original music, save progress, unlimited continues. Oh yeah, and a complete second arcade game thrown in as well. You could argue it's a little pricey for a port of an old game, but I think it's worth it, especially considering what $3 gets you in the Game Room for comparison. It's pretty awesome with the SFIV TE joystick. My three year old son is having a blast with it and has just cleared stage 3 by himself (he can't really use a controller, but does fine with the joystick).

Anyway, I see only one of my friends has this game, so I'd encourage anyone here who likes classic arcade games to get it either now or eventually. It's worth 800 points, but now that I've bought it, I fully expect it to be on sale for 400 points by the end of June. You're welcome.

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

Do both games have unlimited continues? I see there is an achievement for finishing in 18 continues, but I usually need a lot more than that on these arcade games designed to eat quarters.

Ok, I'm buying it. It was too awesome not too. I sure hope I don't find myself 400 points short of something in the future.

Did anyone see the Street Fighter cartoon episode you unlock in the FF Vault? It's so bad, it's horrible!

You unlock it by scoring 570,000 points in the final level. Shouldn't be an issue with unlimited continues.

Ran through Final Fight by myself tonight and finished it with Cody. Enjoyed it greatly

Glad you got it, Stan. I'm really impressed with that porting job.

From Joystiq:

This Wednesday: After Burner Climax and Puzzle Chronicles on XBLA
by Richard Mitchell { Apr 19th 2010 at 3:00PM }

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.c...uzzlechron.jpg

After last week's one-two punch of Final Fight: Double Impact (you bought it, right?), another arcade gem will take off on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday in the form of After Burner Climax. It's a port of the 2006 arcade game, which itself is a revival of the classic, late-80s arcade series.

Konami's Puzzle Chronicles also arrives on XBLA this week. Lest you've forgotten, this is "that game that looks like a sideways version of Puzzle Quest." If it's anywhere near as good as Puzzle Quest, we'll take it.

Both games will be available for 800http://www.blogcdn.com/www.xbox360fa...slogosmall.gif($10) apiece.

When is Puzzle Quest 2 due out?

Decker 04-19-10 05:28 PM

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

Soon, but there's not a date yet.

Honestly, I'm already burned out on the puzzle/RPG sub-genre before these two even hit. Puzzle Quest felt special, fun and unique when it came out. Galactrix and Gyromancer, not so much.

xmiyux 04-19-10 05:52 PM

Re: XBLA Thread Part 400 - Pinata's got a brown nose

Keep hope alive for Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes. It was genuinely good on the DS. Crisping up the graphics, achievements, and online multiplayer will cause me to re-buy that title in a heartbeat.

You are right about Galactrix and Gyromancer though. Anything new in the genre needs to do something beyond Puzzle Quest and bring something new to the table. Especially since PQ did it so well.
