Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
If you have a chance, I recommend watching old coverage of past E3 shows. I own Gamespot's exclusive E3 dvds from 2003-2005. I popped in 2003, and it was amusing to how amazed we were at graphics that look piss poor these days. And one of their best in show was the turkey True Crime Streets of LA. They also gushed about Call of Ctulu.
It's also funny to watch the Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft press conferences. They make all these promises that never happen. In E3 2003, Microsoft pimped the heck out of True Fantasy Online. Then the game was quietly canceled. Lots of ooohs and ahhhs in the audience when Sony announced the PSP which has been a dud since day 1. Nintendo was bragging about some e-reader thing for the gameboy. Course, it doesn't top their truly embarassing E3 of 2008. |
Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
PSP is a dud?
Compared to what other handheld gaming device that has tried to compete with Nintendo???? Let's see, we have Sega's Game Gear (which was also superior to the gameboy at the time, but never caught on). Turbo Graphx handheld? Now, that was a true dud. Sony PSP? While I've had mine since near launch and I could count the times I've played it on both hands I'd still not call it a dud. UMD movies for the PSP are a complete dud though. |

And to me, the PSP was/is a dud. Surprised a new version of it will be announced. |

You enjoy the PSP, I enjoy the PSP, but the fact remains that held up to Sony's expectations, it was a dud. They make their money on games sold, and it's sold a shit number of games.
They expected people to get 2nd jobs to purchase a over-priced PS3. They expect people to just eat and buy their shit up because they say so. I'm just saying with proper perspective (yeah, I know it sounds like spin and I hate $ony as much as anyone), but the PSP isn't a dud. |
Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
Anything competing against the DS is going to look like a dud no matter how many they sell.

I don't ever remember battery life being an issue. |

The number one problem with the PSP has been the weak game library. Compared to hundreds, maybe thousands of DS titles, PSP only has a handful of really good ones.

I loved Game Gear

Nothing, I mean, nothing beats the "Giant Enemy Crab" presentation. That whole thing played out like an SNL sketch.

Yeah, it's not even about good games vs. bad games - it's about games that sell, and a large chunk of the DS's library of games have sold far better than every single PSP game.

Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
Just go through old threads in this forum. There were many, many people, myself included, who thought the DS would be a failure and that the PSP would rock. Also, a lot of praise for games that don't hold up graphically today. I mean, if that's what you think is comedy.

Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
All I know is I thought the Wii would be big, and I didn't bash the name too hard, if at all, like some people did. :)

Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
That crab thing was absolutely hilarious. Real time weapon changes!

Oh, I know that. I really wish I could have been there when we had giant crabs in battles though. Perhaps that is where our modern tanks come from.

Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
Was there an E3 or equivalent when stuff like the Jaguar or Virtual Boy came out? Would love to see that...
|
Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
The first E3 was in 1995. I think Jaguar had already come and gone but VB came out that summer.

There isn't much relevant video that I can find from the old CES shows (it wasn't the circus that E3 has been) and I remember having to catch glimpses of all the new stuff when CBS or NBC did segments on their morning news shows... That said, the Jaguar seems to have gone over pretty well at the time: http://www.atariarchives.org/cfn/09/03/08/0058.php Atari Corp. announced today that the Atari Jaguar 64-bit interactive multimedia game system has been named the industry's "Best New Game System" (VideoGames Magazine), "Best New Hardware System" (Game Informer) and "1993 Technical Achievement of the Year" (DieHard GameFan). The awards were presented last week at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. In addition, VideoGames Magazine selected a Jaguar advertisement as "1993's Best Print Ad" and Electronic Games voted Jaguar's newest software title, "Tempest 2000," the "Best Game of the Show." |

Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious
Hardware sales wise the PSP has been doing just fine. I think it's about 50% of DS world wide sales and has old sold the DS in Japan from time to time. They obviously have significant problems with piracy that has been hurting their software sales. In fact, out of all the people I know with PSPs in real life, not a single one has ever bought a PSP game. A pretty sad statistic. Clearly they need to go digital only and the PSP Go is a step in that direction. To compare the success of the PSP to the Game gear, Atari Lynx, Wonderswan, or TG16 is a joke.
I actually, almost prefer my PSP over my DS. At least it's pretty close. Still, I'm extremely happy with the DSi redesign even though I don't give a shit about the camera or DSiWare. And there's more than enough software to keep any normal person busy. |

In a couple years, we'll all still be laughing about the "trying on dresses" game Microsoft thinks we are all dying to play.

Nintendo also had a dressing game. :)

What really makes a game stand out these days visually is the art design, style, and execution + how it all complements the gameplay. IMHO of course. |
