Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious

If you have a chance, I recommend watching old coverage of past E3 shows. I own Gamespot's exclusive E3 dvds from 2003-2005. I popped in 2003, and it was amusing to how amazed we were at graphics that look piss poor these days. And one of their best in show was the turkey True Crime Streets of LA. They also gushed about Call of Ctulu.

It's also funny to watch the Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft press conferences. They make all these promises that never happen. In E3 2003, Microsoft pimped the heck out of True Fantasy Online. Then the game was quietly canceled. Lots of ooohs and ahhhs in the audience when Sony announced the PSP which has been a dud since day 1. Nintendo was bragging about some e-reader thing for the gameboy. Course, it doesn't top their truly embarassing E3 of 2008.

PSP is a dud?

Compared to what other handheld gaming device that has tried to compete with Nintendo????

Let's see, we have Sega's Game Gear (which was also superior to the gameboy at the time, but never caught on).

Turbo Graphx handheld? Now, that was a true dud.

Sony PSP? While I've had mine since near launch and I could count the times I've played it on both hands I'd still not call it a dud. UMD movies for the PSP are a complete dud though.

Spoken for the truth.

And to me, the PSP was/is a dud. Surprised a new version of it will be announced.

You enjoy the PSP, I enjoy the PSP, but the fact remains that held up to Sony's expectations, it was a dud. They make their money on games sold, and it's sold a shit number of games.

Nothing will ever live up to Sony expectations.

They expected people to get 2nd jobs to purchase a over-priced PS3.

They expect people to just eat and buy their shit up because they say so.

I'm just saying with proper perspective (yeah, I know it sounds like spin and I hate $ony as much as anyone), but the PSP isn't a dud.

Anything competing against the DS is going to look like a dud no matter how many they sell.

How was the Game Gear superior? A big clunky portable unit with about an hour of battery life?

The number one problem with the PSP has been the weak game library. Compared to hundreds, maybe thousands of DS titles, PSP only has a handful of really good ones.

The graphics were far better, and the controls were much easier to use.

I don't ever remember battery life being an issue.

That's a fallible argument. So you're saying the DS has thousands of 'really good ones?'

I had both. If you weren't tethered to a plug, you weren't playing your Game Gear. That thing destroyed AAs, six at a time. The graphics were in color yes, but they weren't all that amazing. What was so much easier about the controls? It had a digital pad and 2 buttons, just like the Game Boy.

Nothing, I mean, nothing beats the "Giant Enemy Crab" presentation. That whole thing played out like an SNL sketch.

Yeah, it's not even about good games vs. bad games - it's about games that sell, and a large chunk of the DS's library of games have sold far better than every single PSP game.

Right but I was mainly getting at comparing the entire DS library to only the good PSP games. That's not an apple to apple comparison.

Just go through old threads in this forum. There were many, many people, myself included, who thought the DS would be a failure and that the PSP would rock. Also, a lot of praise for games that don't hold up graphically today. I mean, if that's what you think is comedy.

All I know is I thought the Wii would be big, and I didn't bash the name too hard, if at all, like some people did. :)

That crab thing was absolutely hilarious. Real time weapon changes!

but it was hilarious when they did it, it's not like we didn't have dynamic weapon changes or boss weak points back then... :)

Oh, I know that. I really wish I could have been there when we had giant crabs in battles though. Perhaps that is where our modern tanks come from.

Was there an E3 or equivalent when stuff like the Jaguar or Virtual Boy came out? Would love to see that...

Michael Corvin 06-01-09 07:59 PM

Re: Watching old E3 Coverage is Hilarious

The first E3 was in 1995. I think Jaguar had already come and gone but VB came out that summer.
