EGM to Return
http://www.egmnow.com/press1.html
BEVERLY HILLS, CA, May 29, 2009 — Steve Harris, founder of “Electronic Gaming Monthly” magazine, announced today that he has entered into an agreement with Ziff Davis Media to re-acquire certain assets, including trademarks and publishing rights, with plans to re-launch EGM in the second half of 2009. “The re-launch of Electronic Gaming Monthly represents a welcome opportunity to continue delivering quality content to gaming enthusiasts,” said Harris. “I feel honored to once again be associated with this respected magazine. The talented writers and designers who built upon EGM’s original vision have left behind a publication that is uniquely positioned to be successful.” |
Re: EGM to Return
Cool. Glad to see it coming back.

Re: EGM to Return
The passion he seems to have for it is pretty refreshing, but I don't see why anyone would want to launch (or re-launch, as it were) a print magazine in this day and age. It just seems like such a D.O.A. idea. What exactly does Steve think he will be able to offer that any online gaming site doesn't? Or is he just banking on there being enough people who like to have something tangible to put in their hands and read while taking a shit that he can sell advertising?

Re: EGM to Return
Finally, I will once again be able to read reviews of games that came out months ago!

Does this mean my subscription will resume?

Re: EGM to Return
Sorry, but Edge over EGM for me. Too much frat boy style writing. It's funny because I did like quite a bit of what 1UP did and some of the people who worked there. I guess, in the end they were still catering to slightly different audiences.

Re: EGM to Return
Good to see that, though the magazine has went down hill in recent years. I think Game informer is the best gaming magazine right now.

I need more toilet material so awesome.

EGM owes me like sixteen years. They better keep all my accrued subscription credit -- I plan to bequeath it to my heirs. |

Re: EGM to Return
did that last issue ever come out online?
|
Re: EGM to Return
I already told some others my theory...this was a plan to dump all the free subscriptions they had given out and start back from scratch. I know they mainly make money on their ads but it's kinda hard to make extra money on the mag itself when everyone already has a free sub to it.
Mine was good thru 2013. I truly doubt they are going to come back and honor that. Can't really blame them though. I always liked the magazine and look forward to its return. |
Re: EGM to Return
Great news! I love EGM and was very very sad to see it go.
|
Re: EGM to Return
Glad to hear it  I was a subscriber to EGM since issue 75 and even though the quality suffered in the final year or so, I still enjoyed reading it.
|
Re: EGM to Return
Did anyone get a replacement sub? I didn't get one, but I thought that was par for the course when a mag gets shut down?
|
Re: EGM to Return
I didn't, but I just assumed it was because I've been on free subscription

I don't understand why demand as dropped off. Looks like people would enjoy reading about their hobby away from the computer. I much rather read EGM than Fish and Stream at the barber shop!! |

I am sad to see print magazines as a whole start to die out. In the good ole days, we had thick copies of PC gamer, Computer Gamer, and Computer Gaming World. Interesting that the UK has a ton of gaming mags though.

I wish that Next Gen had worked out, which would have proven that videogame magazines could be profitable with more in depth articles about the game industry. I mean, my favorite articles in EGM are stuff like looking back at games with the developers. But then, a lot of pages are dedicated to previews with one or two screenshots and a little blurb of text. The old chunky magazines usually came out in the holiday season, and most of the pages were ads (but hey, I actually like videogame ads). Also, a significant portion was dedicated to "cheat codes" and walkthroughs, which are pretty unnecessary in gaming mags these days (though I wish they included stuff like maps for games). Now we have these single platform magazines that don't even have enough content to fill out the magazine... I don't care about mobile gaming, but somehow it's inserted into every mag I get. That being said, it was stated before that EGM being put out of business was not because it wasn't profitable, it just wasn't in the gameplan for the people that bought them out. |

Re: EGM to Return
I wondered why I never even received a piece of mail about EGM being canceled. Very happy to hear it's coming back. Hopefully things work out.
|
Re: EGM to Return
YES!!!
Will definitely re-sub to it. The mag went to shit after he and Semrad left. |
Re: EGM to Return
I hope the mags are thicker than the average to-go menu, though. The last year + was pretty sad.

I think mostly it's because of lead times... you can find the latest news, for free, online. No way print mags can beat that.

Of course it's a UK magazine, so it's like $10 an issue because of the conversion rate. |

Game Informer does a good job of lead times. They broke the Bioshock 2 story before anyone else, and they published reviews for Infamous and Red Faction weeks ago.

Re: EGM to Return
Glad to have it back. But they just don't have the exclusives that G.I. has had over the past couple of years.

This, of course, is the other problem with print mags (well, I guess it affects online mags too, but I"m sure there's more pressure on print mags to get news early)... not the exclusives themselves, but the pressure to give great reviews to those exclusives, and all the shadiness therein.
Which is why I love metacritic....There were MANY game developers giving each other high fives when EGM went under. There is an effort on their part to give magazines (and now websites) that give "a slight push" on review scores early access to their games. The smart magazines don't sell all of their reviews, just a percentage of them, so they can still have the 5's and 6's to show their "integrity" All the years of work on game developers parts (not all of them mind you) to destroy magazines like EGM, have been a waste with sites like Metacritic. Now they are trying to give preorder bonuses with their games to get you before reviews come out. With movies, Harry Knowels at Aintitcool is the biggest whore of all. He LOVES to put up reviews from time to time like his Terminator Salvation review, that BLASTS a movie. That way you can tell he is not a "whore" But for every Terminator Salvation review there are 10 Godzilla reviews that are bought and paid for by the movie studios. I love it when you see advertising on his site for a movie, and all the "early screening reviews" of that movie are glowing as is his review. |

Re: EGM to Return
Edge is also really expensive, isn't it, even without taking into account the importing costs. I think a normal sub in the UK is like quarterly payments of 10 pounds. I'm not sure a gaming magazine could survive here with that kind of pricing.
|
Re: EGM to Return
All the import mags are expensive. But Edge doesn't throw any extras in like the others do such as strat guides, cheat books, dvds full of trailers and review, etc. But Edge is thick as hell. Lots of content for your money. I saw one today at B&N and it was mucho thicko.
|
Re: EGM to Return
Woah, forget the 10 pounds a quarter, subscribing locally from Amazon is like 100 bucks. How much does an individual issue cost?
I wonder sometimes how the magazine industries are in other places. I sometimes drool at the thick Japanese Videogame magazines and all the pretty pictures inside, but the per magazine price is also pretty high. Then you have the monthly Japanese Hobby magazines, which really, really put the domestic toy magazines to shame... |
Re: EGM to Return
I believe it is around $9.99 an issue from B&N or BAM. It may even be as much as $12.99.
|
Re: EGM to Return
I'm glad to see it return, I can remember reading it along side Gamepro during my younger years. Right now though I'm fine with my subscriptions to Game Imformer, PLAY & OXM. I just like having the good old paper rags in my hand while on the crapper, what can I say.
|
Re: EGM to Return
I'd rather have Computer Gaming World/Games for Windows back. EGM was good when I was 12 and some of the issues were like 400 pages long. Some of those issues were downright epic. It got too cut down in it's later days.
|
Re: EGM to Return
It's now more affordable for US subscribers because they have a US distributor.
https://www.imsnews.com/ims_subscribe.php?pubid=97 Edge Magazine - 1 Year (13 Issues) - $75.00 Edge Magazine - 2 Years (26 Issues) - $135.00 Edge Magazine - Quarterly Payment - $19.99 I don't buy Edge for the latest reviews, although, like Game Informer, their reviews are usually pretty timely. It's for the in-depth 4 page interviews, previews, thoughts on the industry etc. Perfect for the toilet, or just when you want to put your eyes to paper rather than a LCD screen. Also, it's the type of reading you just won't find on the internet. Most just aren't prepared to click through pages of text in their browser, and most gaming websites have caught on to that. It doesn't have the wit or frat boy humour of an EGM but I get more than enough of that on internet message boards and gaming websites. No need for anyone to cut down trees to print that shit out for me. |
