Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection Sound Problem

I recently bought this game on the PS3 and have an odd problem with it. There is no audio in any of the games. Strangely, the main menu has sound effects as I'm going through it, but once I choose a game and start it... nothing.

A little research has yielded several posts from people claiming to have the same problem on different sites, like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/sound-problems...sin=B001G33V8S

Several people fixed it when they learned that the sound was coming through their headphone, so they just turned off the headphones. But I don't own PS3 headphones. I also tried different settings recommended by others through the XMB but got nothing. I took the game back and got another one, but it's exactly the same. The sound works fine in all my other games.

Has anyone else had this problem or can anyone think of any technical reason this would be happening? I'm dying to play these games!

Mine's fine. I assume you get sound in other games?

Yes, all my other games work fine. There seems to be sound issues on this game for some PS3 owners though. I haven't been able to get help anywhere else, so this is kind of my last resort before I just give up and sell it.

Why not contact Sega instead of selling it?

I have it on PS3 and have no sound issues. Not sure on that one. I output sound through HDMI if that matters.

Re: Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection Sound Problem

Yes, my sound is output through HDMI. The thing that confuses me is that EVERYTHING else I have works. My games, my movies, music, all of it. Even THIS game has some sound, but as I mentioned it's only in the main menu. So the HDMI is passing sound but not all of it. I don't understand how that can be, but once I start any game in this collection, they are completely silent.

I've seen a few posts from people who had this problem who then played their game on another PS3 and it worked fine, just not on theirs. Unfortunately I don't know anyone else with a PS3 to try this for sure. But I seriously doubt I got two bad games in a row. Every perosn I've contacted who had this problem seems to be able to solve it by disconnecting their headphones, but again, I don't have headphones. I'm beginning to wonder if I should buy some and see if I get sound for the game through them.

I tried contacting Sega but they were no help. They just offered to exchange it, which I've already done once. Maybe it's something from the last update? I noticed that when I installed the last update the key tones on my xmb stopped working. Now, even if I have them turned on, there is no sound in the xmb.

I'm not an audio expert or anything. I believe I have everything set up correctly since my other games output just fine. I'm at a loss.

Yeah this is really weird. Mine is a 60GB one and once again not sure if that matters.

So's mine. Living dead, what version of the PS3 firmware are you on?

Re: Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection Sound Problem

I have an 80GB machine. As for firmware, I believe it was 2.70. It was the latest. I see a new one is available today and I am downloading it now.

I'm beginning to believe that the last update jacked up my PS3. I've noticed that since the last update movie load times are longer, there's no key tones in the xmb or the playstation store, and it locked up while I was trying to get online to dl the new firmware tonight. I never had any problems with the system previously.

As soon as this update is installed I'll see if I have sound in the game, but I doubt it.

Just installed 2.76. As I figured, nothing has changed.

Check that the cable is plugged in completely. Replace the HDMI cable with a spare. Make sure no bluetooth devices are registered with the system that it would be piping audio to.

Try deleting the old install and updates for the game, along with any saves. That way it will re-install everything from scratch.

I already tried different cables and connections. No luck.

This was a good idea that I hadn't tried, but it didn't work. Still no sound. I wish I knew someone with a PS3 headset so I could test to see if I get sound through it like others have reported. But I really don't want to buy an accessory I'm never going to use.

I'm out of ideas. It must be something in my settings, but I don't know enough about it to fix it.
