Maybe I haven't paid much attention the PS3, but I haven't seen any widespread complaints about that sort of problem. That and if they are actually making a slimmer model, certainly the hardware would have to be different to actually go in a smaller shell and wouldn't overheat in 30 minutes.

"You know, one of these days, someone at one of these big companies is going to get this right. If you send a cease and desist about "leaked" photos of a supposed device, you're basically saying, "Hey guys, those pictures are real." Now, we can't tell you with 100 percent assurance that that's the case when it comes to those factory pics of rubber-gloved hands all over an apparently-new PS3 hardware design, but it doesn't help anyone's case when a Chinese company sends your Japanese wing a takedown notice. Keep in mind, since this thing isn't from Sony, we can't really be sure that it's the real deal, but we'll be honest -- things are starting to look mighty suspicious."

Yeah, rarely do you get a cease and desist when some guy does a fancy photoshop. The box is the thing that looks the most legit and maybe this is Sony's big plan to relaunch the PS3 at E3. If it is true I want no part of it. Even with the cooler chips that is way too compact a design. It also means you have another huge power brick like the 360 and it possibly means you have a console putting out more heat than it can deal with just like the 360 and no way I risk that.

They either need to add back the missing features like PS2 compatibility and SACD, or do something like this, or both, and drop the price, to get me interested.

Considering that the current PS3 design can handle the heat issue just fine I have confidence that if a slimmer PS3 is released that it too will deal with the heat.

I won't jump in to get the new model unless it provides everything that my PS3 80 does.... including PS2 B/C, 4 USB ports, memory card reader.

You must not have had to pay Sony 150 bucks for a refurb because your system got the YLOD within the first few years of operation. It isn't a widespread problem but it sure has affected quite a few 60gb systems as well as a number of 40gb and 80gb units. There is a heat problem in the units and somewhere after the two year mark, and sometimes way before that, the chips start pulling themselves off the motherboard because of the heat and crappy thermal paste.

I highly doubt this newer model will include similar features that the original 60GB model had. The Metal Gear Solid bundle is still available on Amazon for the time being...

I know a person that just went through this on a 80Gb model. He thought his fan was malfunctioning and that it caused the overheating that lead to the YLOD. No idea, but I'm not buying that a slimmer version will have less issues. If the 360 has taught us anything its the fact these things get designed first and then given to the engineers to figure out how to build. Sometimes they are asked to do the impossible and you end up with the 360.

why not
when rumors start spreading enough to possibly hold people off from buying your system the threat of legal action would seem very prudent

Also, it was pointed out in a couple of places that Sony's response to the PSP Go was the usual we don't comment on rumors thing. This frequently means a rumor is true. With this image Sony said clearly that they are not redesigning the console. This thing is a fake.

Re: Leaked images of PS3 Slim - possibly

so it appears this rumor/info will likely turn out to be true before the end of the year

we'll be seeing a slimmed-down PS3 in August or September. However, this news likely won't be announced during E3.

Allow us to explain. There are plenty of PS3 systems sitting on store shelves right now, and Sony is planning on sitting back and allowing the supply of those units to dry up over the summer. We shouldn't expect a price cut, but the possibility is certainly there. After retailers are ready for new stock, Sony will begin releasing the slimmer units to retail, although what features have been taken away or added is still anyone's guess.

I might consider an upgrade when they drop the price. I have the 60GB and was watching a DVD the other night and the fan noise is as unbearable as the 360.

I could still get a decent amount for the 60GB, right?

60 GB (with BC) are still in very high demand I believe

60 GB (with BC) are the one's more prone to YLOD.

I doubt there's much to this rumor, but if there is...

I think it would be interesting to see a "PS3 Arcade" at the $299 price point...small hard-drive, no Wi-Fi, no BC, 2 USBs, a Greatest Hits pack in (Heavenly Sword or Uncharted) and maybe a Pixeljunk Game.

Better yet, how about a $199 "PS3 Go" with no disk drive at all and a big hard-drive. I could live with Burnout Paradise, Warhawk and a bunch of PSN games...and they could just release a bunch more full games for download.

That's the exact reason I sold my old 60GB last year - noise. Purchased the newer 80GB version, and haven't heard the fans yet. From what I can tell, the 60GB versions are still in high demand, (at least as in demand as they were late last year) so you should get a decent amount for it.

That surprises me. My 60 GB is near-silent. I'll sometimes be home for a couple of hours before seeing the blue light on and realizing that my PS3 was accidently turned on by my son while I was out.

I have a launch 60 GB too. The thing is quiet as hell, even when loading.

I could see the former, but not the latter... no way. I know they seem to be going in that direction with the PSP, but who in their right mind would buy a PS3 without a Blu drive, for whatever price?

I'd drop $199 on one if they started releasing all games as DLC at reasonable prices ($30).

You're right of course...just throwing crazy ideas out there...but I'll bet that's what the next generation of consoles looks like.

To be clear, my 60gb PS3 is only loud when playing DVDs. I think it's still quiet on games and BDs. I'll have to pay closer attention to those next time.

Mine as well. My Falcon board 360 is 2-3 times as loud when playing games or DVDs, but some of that noise is the incredibly loud disc noise.
