Ive been waiting for a game like that, not even BP or Pure could do that! The demo was fun enough and the crashes/explosions were cool on the surround sound. But I detest rubberband AI. I hope its not as bad as Mario Kart. I witnessed the plane crash and I drove RIGHT under it as it hit the ground. I yelled out "Oh shit!" It was fun, and though I almost wish there was a boost, itd be awesome if there were take downs! One thing I absolutely LOVE about Split/Second is the Heads-up display. I've never seen one as elegant, functional and non-distracting. I hope other racing games copy that model. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Alright I've done the first "Season" and this game is a total blast. Pun intended. The game is structured exactly like Pure in terms of events, earning points and unlocking cars/decals etc. If it ain't broke...
the racing: a part of me wants a boost, but with the way the game plays, a boost would almost be a cheat. Maintaining your lead is the challenge because you can't cause destruction on the cars behind you. Boosting would make things too easy. Also a part of me really wants Takedowns, but again, with all the shit going on in the game, it would almost be too much. Other than the start of the race the cars stay pretty spaced out (I assume to allow for triggering the mayhem). So it would be a nice touch, but honestly, not a huge loss. the tracks I've done the first 6 or so events, and replayed quite a few trying for 1st and none felt all that redundant the second or third time through. Also, I'm not quite getting that argument anyway. Outside of Burnout Paradise, what other racing games have dynamic tracks that change? Hasn't every racing game essentially been get from point a to b on a set course with an occasional shortcut tossed in? the cars: I noticed a huge difference from the demo right away. I've tried four different cars so far and all handle better than what was in the demo. So I'd have to chalk that up to being a 12 month old demo. Do they handle with Burnout precision? Of course not, no game has come close, but they handle fine for the game they were built for. No real problems with rubber-banding, but this was just the first set of events. Hard to tell there. So far the only real gripe have have is the lack of car damage. Once you come out the other side of a huge wreck, your car is pristine as it was as the beginning of the race and drives like new. The game reminds me a lot of the first Burnout game. A kick ass game with some awesome ideas that will only get better with some fine tuning in a sequel. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
How many actual tracks does the game have - and no, backwards/mirrored/etc don't count.
|
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I think I read it has a dozen. Honestly between the different modes the tracks change up quite a bit. Even if you are on essentially the same course you just played, the next one may force you through routes that you normally wouldn't hit, making it seem like a different course. Think of a "track" as a giant concourse that has 3-4 different routes. I don't think you'll see them all in a single race, so the game routes you through them separately on different modes.
Air Strike is a beast. I've unlocked a couple and the best I can muster after a half dozen tries is 3rd on one and 5th on another. Figured I'd give online a go for some, what I thought, easy achievements. Win a race, how hard could that be on day 1? Well, your online car options are limited to what you have unlocked in single player. Fail. What's worse is you can pony up 320 spacebucks to unlock all the cars to have that advantage. Double Fail. I did get a secret 'viral/beat a developer or someone who has this' achievement already. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Just watched the Gametrailers review - they said it has 11 tracks.
So while it looks like a blast at first, I don't think it'll have much, if any, longevity. I think I'll look into it when it hits the $30 range. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I keep killing myself with the power plays.
Having played through the first "episode", I'm a little concerned with the longevity. Once you've run through the track a couple times, you know what to look out for. But I'm having fun right now. |

But yeah, it still doesn't feel like a $60 game. <$45? Yeah, seems like the sweet spot. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I'm up to Episode 7 (of 12). That's about 5 hours of play. I'm guessing probably 10-12 hours to play through the entire season. Going for 1st Place in all events will probably double or triple that time.
I haven't seen any problems with rubberbanding. The fact is, it's easy to go from last to first place fairly quickly. That's just the way the game is. But if you run a perfect race, you can smoke everyone by a few seconds. I don't see any AI cheating so far. One thing that disappoints are the tracks. There's only 11. I've already unlocked 10. Some of them share the same stretch of road. So you'll see the same shortcuts and powerplays. That seems kinda lazy. I would have liked more variety. I wonder if they held some tracks back for DLC. |

Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I tried the demo and I wasn't too impressed. I think the framerate holds it back some. Racing games really should be 60fps, because otherwise you just don't get the right sense of speed IMHO. I'm not sure I like the Michael Bay-esque visuals either.
I'll give it another try though. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I love this game. Jumping rooftops, triggering an explosion in mid air, and sending the guy in front of me flying, oh yes.

Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I am really enjoying this game. I am on episode 5 right now, and it is getting a bit hard. In the helicoptor ones I don't so much have trouble avoiding the missles as I do avoiding the walls. Very fun, the levels are so visceral and action packed. At least 3 times a race I'm turning my hand to turn corners which obviously doesn't work, and screaming WHOA when I barely miss something
The first time you see a level 2 power move it is ridiculous and so damn amazing. And Drexl I think it has great speed in it, the surround of the items whooshing by in my rears does a lot to help with that, and it feels plenty quick to me. If it were any quicker I would be getting scraped off the pavement more often with the computers Power moves. |

That was fun, like Bad Boys 2. Got this running throught the amp and sounds amazing. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Just hit episode 8, and it feels like the difficulty has doubled suddenly. This has the most unforgiving rubber banding ive ever seen.

Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Love playing Detonator mode on the level with the 2 big bridges exploding.
The sound design on this is quite interesting, like when you do a level 2 action the sound drops for a quick second then hits you with the explosion. I like the airstrike better then getting hit by the chopper only. Just started episode 9 and those elite races are getting harder. Anyone play online yet? |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
On episode 10 now, but i have to get 85 more credits to unlock the elite race to advance. Ah unfair replay value. Time to take a break and ride a horse instead in Red Dead.
|
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Anyone notice to 0 point Achievement for "Better Luck Next Time"? Since I don't really pay attention to them it's the first time I've noticed one like that. Are there others like that out there too?

Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Halo 3 has a few zero pointers. Kameo had a few as well. I think Kameo was the first, actually.
|
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I saw Super Street Fighter IV has one. It's hard enough to get a single achievement in that game -- get them ALL and you unlock that zero-pointer. Congrats!

Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
For those that missed the Amazon deal, according to a post on CAG, S/S will be $40 next week at Best Buy (comes with code for 3 downloadable Best Buy cars).

Sounds like me. I play until I want to chuck the controller into the tv when I see that I need to get first in every event just to unlock the elite race or go back and very angrily try to finish others a bit better. I say fuck it and put on Red dead lol |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Detonator and Air Strike are still pissing me off. I did a Detonator race last night and crossed the finish line in what I thought was first, but nope, 1 second ticked off as I crossed relegating me to 2nd place. Didn't come that close in the half dozen more attempts I tried.
I've still only opened 5 Seasons. In the first 4, I've managed Gold on everything but the Aforementioned Air Strike and Detonator races. So annoying. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
So verdict at this point? Pass at $40 next week? Wait for the eventual $20 price point?
I was thinking about getting it next week, but if it's really frustrating, I'm sure Modnation will satisfy my racing urge, and RDR and SMG2 will continue to occupy my gaming time while I wait. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I'd say a no brainer at $40, but I'm loving every minute of the game, frustration and all.
Some of these other guys might say otherwise. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I haven't found it frustrating, but I'm only at Episode 4. So far I'm having a lot of fun with the game and would recommend it for $40.
|
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
The frustration comes from crossing the finish line in Detonator 1 second longer than the par time over and over and over again and again.
I think Air Strike has gotten better now that I have unlocked some better cars. Finally did my first Air Revenge yesterday. Cool concept, but it was too easy. |

Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Can't find any online comparisons of the 360 vs PS3 differences. Anything significant? I have both consoles and want whichever is the best performing/best looking version.
|
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
For those that are having troubles with Air Strike, I think I just stumbled onto a guaranteed 1st place finish every time.
Spoiler:
It feels like there are a couple factors at play here. First it feels like you don't drift and slide as much. Second it appears that the blast radius from the rockets may be different. It felt like I could drive a whole lot closer to the blast without losing the "perfect wave" score. It seems like there is a whole lot more room for error. Combine those two factors together and I got back-to-back 1st place finishes on two courses that I've probably done 3 dozen times. I didn't wreck once on either course. Could be a fluke, so I'll have to try it out on a couple more courses, but so far it seems like it may work every time. |

Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I bought the game from Amazon and received it yesterday. Played for like an hour or so and had a blast! This game is fun. Finished the first season, gold in everything, repeating most of the races of course, to get gold.
One of my highlights: winning a race in the last microsecond, or something like that, the fireworks were on, so I thought I was second. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I played a few races tonight after liking the demo. It's definitely a fun single player experience. The multiplayer, however, is broken. Every race I tried to get into was full of people with a maxed out vehicle, with no way for me to compete. Even level 99 people like myself had a fully maxed car, while mine has 1 bar. Everyone should have the same cars to pick from online. Also, most of the matches won't launch and you get stuck in a lobby while the timer counts from 5 to 0 over and over. Oh well, back to single player!

Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
Actually, I'm thinking this is the best arcade racer since Burnout Revenge. I certainly haven't had this much fun racing since I dropped 60+ hours into that game.
So while the thread title started out as a lark, it's becoming true for me. |
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
I'm playing in spurts of 30 minutes each day and having a lot of fun. Been able to take gold in everything but I think I was influenced my Michael Corvin's posts that I can't be better than 4th in Air Strike. :( :p
|
Re: Split/Second [Q1/2010 |360 & PS3] Burnout, watch your back!
lol. I've actually moved on from Air Strike since my post above. Now it's Detonator that's giving me fits. I have all Gold on 9 seasons except for a few Detonator.
