No, they want to keep selling PS2s.

There were some new 60gb PS3s available on Amazon earlier for $299. Almost got one, was pushing the button to place the order when it sold out. Those things new go for $700 on ebay.

PlayStation Network Regular Scheduled Maintenance

The PlayStation Network will undergo maintenance tomorrow, August 25th. Maintenance is expected to start at 8am Pacific and could last for several hours. During this time, users won’t be able to access the store or account management, and may encounter some difficulty while signing in to PSN.

The new 120GB PS3 slim was spotted earlier this morning at Best Buy near the Polaris Town Center (central Ohio); there were 25 of these on the floor in the PS3 aisle, and placed beside the remaining 80GB stock (5 of these were left, as I bought one). Sorry, no pics to post.

That's right, there would actually have to be people on PSN to complain! ZING!

Is there any reviews out that compare the slim to the original?
I read somewhere that the blu-ray chip is different, and the frames per second would lower in the slim.
So far all the TV & internet stuff is talking about is the new look & the lower $$.. no one is talking about how it performs!

It really shouldn't perform any different to play a BD. It can't really lower the frames per second at all either or else the TV/projector/monitor wouldn't pick up the signal in most cases. Performance would be based on speed of booting up, installing data, copying stuff from an external media card, wi-fi, etc.

The only difference I have heard is that the slim can bitstream all the audio codecs. Other than that it isn't much different from the current PS3 minus linux support. I'm still waiting to see how long it lasts which may take a year to find out. The cooling in the slim looks terrible. I know it is supposed to run cooler, but I'm still skeptical that those few tiny vents will provide enough air flow.

The thing looks cheap and ugly to me. Much tackier looking than the 360 which I have never been fond of design wise. I wouldn't care at $149, but at $299 I would still hope for something a bit sleeker. Granted sometimes these things look bad in pics and are better looking up close. Hopefully I can see one for myself soon.

This one has blast processing which makes up for the weaker Blu-ray chip.

Seriously though, I don't know why frames per second would be affected. Video has a set frame rate unlike games, and no BD player has more or fewer FPS than another. They all output all of the frames of the material at a rate the display can accept (60 or 24hz). The only thing I can think of is that somebody got confused about 1080p24 vs. 1080p60, but the previous PS3s could output 24hz.

Or maybe he meant BD games? I also doubt there would be a difference.

For anyone in the Seattle area looking to get a PS3 Slim early, there were a bunch of them at the Northgate Best Buy last night.

I love the new commercial. Also, after it seeing it torn apart I am impressed by the fan they have in there. It looks like the slim is very solidly built so maybe the YLOD is a thing of the past.

I saw one today at BB and have to admit that I wasn't impressed. It looks a lot cheaper than the original. Could be just the high gloss missing but it seemed to be lacking something that the old one has. Couldn't put my finger on it.

Did many people have an issue with the size of the fat? It never bothered me. All I ever heard bitching about was the price.

^ I don't think they made the slim to appease customer complaints. This was probably simply designed to reduce productions costs.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

That's something I know truly nothing about.

How much cheaper can it be, per unit, to produce than before? And what was the design cost to create the new model and all the assembly line changes to reconfigure to the new form factor?

How many do you have to sell before you break even on that to start recouping the up-front cost?

I posted sometime ago about this but maybe no one was interested, however I'll try again. If anyone likes car racing games and has a UK account and wants in on the SuperCar beta, I have one available beta code.

Just reply to this and I'll pm it your way.

Significantly. The cost of the "piano black gloss" of the original was probably a $30-$40 cost (not including scrap of the paint process - which can be very difficult to control -- trust me) and I personally don't know what items (ie USB, one touch start, etc) were removed... overall I'd say they saved $60+ per unit; maybe more.

That much for the gloss? Wow, that should have been removed from the drawing board back in 2005!

Or they should have released a limited run of say 1000 glossy units so the rest non-glossy. Of course, make the non-glossy units cheaper since they wouldn't have been limited and all.
