Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I finally took the plunge and bought some PSN games. Bionic Commando HD, Noby Noby Boy, Pixeljunk Eden, and Ragdoll Kung Fu.

Having a blast with Eden.

I've snapped shots of lots of zebras, giraffes, topi, lemurs, and some others. I can't get close enough to the hippos to get a good shot. If you get to close they will charge you and send you to the medical tent of your camp. I did get a couple cool shots of some vultures taking flight.

You get graded on your shots(the gamey part of the game), and of the 10 or so I've submitted (to the home office) I've gotten all A's and two C's. The C's are from the zoom problem.

Here's something interesting, the game treats the controller like a camera with the Sixaxis controls. If you are moving the controller and snap a shot, you'll get a blurry picture. Want to snap a vertical shot? Turn the controller on its side and snap away. Very cool.

One thing I am disappointed in is the lack of real documentary footage. In your field guide you can read about each animal see various pictures & a 3D render of the animal. This game has ties to National Geographic though and it's on BD so there is plenty of room to put some actual video footage in there. Why isn't there?
what game is this?

Damn you for bringing Afrika back up! You just cost me $62!

I ordered it along with Aquanaut's Holiday.

Aquanaut supposedly has trophy support too! But I haven't earned one yet... Corvin's impressions of Afrika are really making me consider ordering it with the coupon that came with AH.

One thing I can help but thinking when I'm riding around in the Jeep in Afrika is that this style of game would be awesome for a Jurassic Park game. Ride around in JP photographing and documenting all the dinos behaviors and such. Even have underwater segments for the water based dinos.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I just bit on Hakuna Matata and Aquanaut's Holiday as well. I got a $5 code from someone on another forum and that was enough to get me to take the plunge.

This will be the first time I've played a game in the PS3 since the week of MGS4. Wish me luck!

Does anyone else have one of those 5 dollar coupons you speak of? I'm on the edge of ordering Afrika and if I can get a coupon I'll order both of Afrika and Aquanaut's Holiday. Thanks!

I just googled for the coupon. I had to try 3-4, but eventually one "stuck".

I must say, seeing the posts here and at CAG, I'm really wondering if there's such interest among gamers for these existing, off-the-beaten-path games, why the hell didn't some publisher bring them stateside? It's not like this is some Japanese RPG game that would require a lot of work to publish in English. They'll put out crap like Hail To The Chimp for the PS3 but not Afrika? I don't get that at all.

It is curious, considering that they're both English-ready (though one could argue that Aquanaut's could use some assistance in that area -- its use of the ellipsis is particularly entertaining).

As Snakes on a Plane has shown us, Internet interest != general population. But more so, interest on a couple forums doesn't mean a whole lot. I don't personally get the appeal of virtual safaris and diving.

I think it would be pretty easy to say you "don't get the appeal" of at least 1/2 the games currently sold for a particular gaming console (unless you're talking about the Wii when that number has to jump to 3/4). So why not release these niche games to a broader market? I don't understand the cost of releasing a game into the U.S. market. Clearly they didn't think they could return the expense. But as Decker said, what about Hail to the Chimp, or its ilk, implies that it would bring a better return on distribution costs than something like Afrika or Aquanaut's Holiday? Do those throwaway titles really sell that well?

Also you have to consider price was the driving factor here. Both games have been out for a while, but don't scream $60. If a company were to port these here at $30 each, they might do reasonably well. There's no way of knowing.

I don't know how the rights to all that stuff works, though I know what you're getting at. That said, at $60 a piece I don't see either selling well in the US, and even then at $30 only passing interest.

That said, the game IS supposed to be released in the US as National Georgraphic: Africa, though I haven't seen anything on that since late last year.

Oh and I get the appeal of most games out there, I just never understood the subgenre of wildlife exploration / photography in videogames.

It's pretty off-topic, but Snakes On A Plane's big blunder is that while the internet buzz was hot in March and April, the film didn't come out until August, by which time it was really old news. If the film had come out in June, it probably would have had a big opening weekend before people realized that the film was complete shit.

I have one at home that I probably won't use. I'll send you a PM when I get home.

Yeah, this. I have an early generation HDTV that doesnt support 720p, so it is either 1080i or 480p for me. Very frustrating as I have to keep remembering to check for that and more often then not I forget to.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

How long usually does it take for play-asia orders to arrive with standard shipping? I ordered last night, my order shipped this morning and I live in Oklahoma (of course). What kind of wait should I expect? Thanks!
