Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
Again, is Lair worth trying out for $20 or is it too crappy even at that price?

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
Did you like the Rogue Squadron series? Lair is basically a skin over those games. I enjoyed it well enough but it was a rental. I doubt I would have given it any serious replay time if I had bought it. I'm not sure if that answers your question though.

A friend of mine bought this at BB a few weeks ago. He brought it over for me to check out last night. Thoughts?  This controller is super comfy, it's not as ergonomic as the 360 pad*, but it is leaps and bounds better than the DS layout. The analogs are placed just right, the 'handles' are just a bit 'off.' But again, it's still better than the Dual Shock design. The rubber texture covers the entire shell of the controller, not just the colored grips on the sides. The face buttons do feel cheap, but I had no problems using them. The new 'triggers' for L2 & R2 are subtle but very effective. They are maybe slightly bigger than the stock DS buttons, but there was no slippage action with these since they have a slight concave shape to them. The only true negative using this is the lack of motion control. I tried it out with Killzone and had to stop and swap controllers when I got to a motion section(separate topic, but why can't the goofy motion in that game be mapped to a button?). I think he said he got it for $40. If I played more retail games on the PS3 I would definitely say this is worth it(assuming the game you are playing has zero motion), but personally I can't justify dropping $40-$45 on a third controller. *if this was a first party design in terms of ergonomics I'd rank it: 360, Wavebird, Shadow Wireless, Xbox S-controller,... then way down the list, Dual Shock. To each of his/her own i guess... but i agree with what's in bold. They just using the motion thingy to make it more PS3 I guess. Honestly, i don't see the point really. Of all the games with the motion thingy, all of them are superfluous... Uncharted, to use it to balance yourself or fend off the bunker creatures (eh). KZ2, use it to turn the wheel or place a charge bomb (eh). The only two that i can think of which purely use the motion thingy correctly are flOw and flOwer. Okay, maybe in Folklore too (too yank out the souls or something like that, i played the demo only, it sound and feel about right). I don't have beef with the Xbox controller, but when comes to platformers, action games, it's too bulky for me (the d-pad is so not cool). Great for FPS or Gears type of shooters. |

Seriously? That would be bad ass. I need to finish this game. Almost done with it, but had to stop due to KZ2 :)
Speaking of KZ2, i don't know, i'm not enjoying it like when i was playing R2 or Gears 2, something is not clicking for me... Maybe it's the weapons? It seems they're all the same. The flamethrower is weird, i can't master it. Grenade launcher too. Shotgun is cool to look at, but don't feel right when comparing to R2 and Gears 2. Take those three away (except for the sniper rifle), all pretty much the same... Oh, i so miss the exploding Magnum from R2. I have to say, the AI is a lot smarter than the other shooters. |
Savage Moon had a patch update over the last few days: about all I could tell where some differences on the moon selection screen (mainly the award icons). Hopefully, that means they're laying the groundwork for an expansion pack. :)

I wonder what the big news supposedly coming out of the Sony camp today is going to be. If it is that they're cutting the PS2 down to 99 dollars = Who cares?

Its looking more and more like the "big" announcement is the PS2 price cut. I'm glad I learned long ago not go build up too much excitement in anticipation for these announcements. But still, I was a little curious ;)

This is like focusing on an old girlfriend when you have someone new in front of you. Sony's marketing machine sucks but they sure love to take your repair money.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
I hardly see any PS commercials let along a PS2 one... $99? Don't we all have one already? My Slim White PS2 is still in the box (never got the chance to hook it up), got it like $110 last year. If that's the big news, meh, not interested...

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
PS2 needs to be free with PS3 purchase. Or with $100 spent on PS2 games.

Not like I'm going to buy one at this point anyway. |

The PS2 is pure profit for them. Right now Sony needs to make money and this will only help. A price cut on the PS3 would lose money. (i.e. selling for less than it costs to mfr). |

IMO Sony can't afford to cut the price of the PS3, they need to hold out until their production costs go down. Plus, in this economy, a $50 price cut won't be as effective as they need it to be.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
Having the PS2 still out there doesn't make me worry about the future of the PS3; if anything, when a company continues to support previous versions it gives me more confidence in the current generation, because it gives the impression that it won't become instantly obsolete the moment they release a new one.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition
That's the rub, Walker, it wasn't instantly obsolete when the PS3 was released. Later, however, they intentionally removed backwards compatibility from the current generation. This necessitated the continued existence of the PS2.
They removed it to save manufacturing costs. Not because there was no demand for BC in the PS3. If that were true they wouldn't need the PS2 at all. Removing BC gave me one less reason to recommend the thing to new purchasers. In fact, the reason I bought mine when I did is because they were removing the BC. But, I run in circles where that kind of information is widely known. |
