Capcom announces three new Resident Evil games for the Wii... kind of
Apparently DVDTalk doesn't allow new users to post external links, so I can't post a link directly but there is a Gamespot article that says that Capcom has announced three "new" RE games for the Wii.
Two of the games are Wii ports of the RE1 Gamecube remake and RE0. I have to really wonder what the point of these ports is. Unlike Pikmin or Metroid Prime, the old style RE games will have no benefit at all being played on a wiimote rather than a controller. Plus, the Umbrella Chronicles has retconned these games anyway.
The other game is a new game that will be a sequel to Umbrella Chronicles. It is called Darkside Chronciles and will feature Leon and Claire during the RE2 events (which was strangely omitted from Umbrella Chronicles which only featured events from RE0, 1, and 3). Personally, I would rather have had a RE2 remake in the style of the Cube RE1 remake rather than another on-rails shooter.
And there is no mention of a RE5 Wii port? WTF??? The RE4 Wii port was so amazing, why is Capcom not doing the same with RE5?
This announcement really boggles my mind... We get two Wii ports that nobody asked for, another on-rails shooter when everyone would have preferred an actual RE2 remake, and no RE5 port. WTF is going on with Capcom???

I'd imagine a wii port takes quite some time. They have to scale down the graphics and change a few gameplay elements. Right now, they're just focusing on getting the 360 and ps3 versions out.

That's true, but I wish Capcom would just announce that they are at least working on it. I don't know whether to pick up the 360 version now or wait for the Wii version that may or may not ever come. (And I hate double dipping, so if I do pick up the 360 version then I will definitely not be picking up the possible Wii version.) I surely am not the only person in that boat.

Agree completely with OP. WTF?
I was really hoping for remakes of the old REs in the RE4 Wii engine...instead, I get another light gun game, and I didn't really enjoy the last one.
Same for Dead Space. I hoped they'd port over a version of the game proper...nope, another light gun game.
Pass.

You know, I probably would have loved Umbrella Chronicles if they simply took it off the rails. I'm not even talking full-on FPS treatment, hell, they can even keep it linear, but give me some degree of control of movement other than merely looking. Even that PSOne RE light gun game offered that.
I love RE0 and RE1v2 but I already have the GC ones and don't see how some pointless Wii motions tacked on will do anything but hurt gameplay. The only real advantage I can see to these ports will be that they will condense the games down to a single disc, so no swapping.
It sucks because they obvious have to put some work into these light gun games, work that could just as easily been used to give fans something they actually want, whether it be a RE2 remake or a RE4 style upgrade to RE0/1/2/3/hell,even Veronica.

Damn, I've been hoping for a few months that the rumors about a RE 2 /Code Veronica remake were true.
If they would remake RE 2 in the same manner that they did the first game I'd eat it up!

Same here. RE 2 is still my favorite resident evil game. I remember playing it the first day it came out and finished it the next day. I would actually put it in one of my most memorable gaming experiences of all time.

I would love to have a new game -- on any system -- that played like the old RE games. If Capcom wants to take the series in an action direction to appeal to more players, that's fine for them, but for players like me who actually like the suspense-laden feel of the old games, a new game in that direction would be a God-send.

Umbrella Chronicles was reasonable for a light gun style game. Also, I've seen RE fans say they enjoyed the lore presented in that game, especially as a return to the Umbrella story arc. A sequel is definitely not a bad idea, although I think it shouldn't be a fully priced game like the first one.

Umbrella Chronicles wasn't horrible. The biggest problem was that 3/4 of the game was just rehashing the old games. The first chapter summarized the events of RE0, the second chapter was RE1, and the third chapter was RE3. Only the last chapter was new, and it was basically just created to please the fans who complained that we never saw how Umbrella met its end.
RE2, 3, and Code Veronica all basically ended on cliffhangers saying that "its time to take out Umbrella." Then the beginning scene of RE4 says "after the fall of Umbrella." Capcom basically just took a big shit and smeared in into the faces of all the old RE fans. All the old fans wanted to take part in (or at a minimum to see) Umbrella fall, but we never did. RE4 was a complete departure from the old school games and plot and survival horror and basically everything...
So Capcom created the Umbrella Chronicles which was basically a very quick rehash of RE0, 1, and 3 and then added on a new final chapter that finally shows the fans how Umbrella ended.
The Darkside Chronicles looks to be more of the same. It is basically turning RE2 (which was strangely omitted from Umbrella Chronicles) into a light-gun on-rails shooter instead of giving us an actual remake ala the Cube remake of RE1 like we want.
Anyway, sorry for rambling on. I am a hardcore fan of the old school RE games, and the new direction that RE has been taking ever since RE4 is a huge sore spot to me.

I couldn't past the tank controls of the older RE games so RE4 was nice in that it allowed me to finally enjoy playing an RE game. I totally see where you're coming from though. I even enjoyed the first two RE movies (not the latest one though).

RE4 still had the same tank controls. All that was really fixed was the camera. The old games had 2D backgrounds, so the camera had to remain static. RE4 was fully 3D so you could move the camera around more and also by having the camera directly behind Leon you had better control. Leon still controlled pretty much like a tank though.
