As much as I loathe for-pay Avatar items, it's amazing what an easy revenue stream it is for Microsoft. The money and effort involved in developing them is almost certainly minor, and for some reason a ton of people buy them.

I have not see any clothing I would buy yet, but I would certainly buy a pet.
Especially the Pug.

They have a whole department that has a bunch of work to just do avatar stuff. In a recent Major Nelson podcast they interviewed someone from there who gave insight into the development of avatar props/clothing. It was actually pretty interesting and kind of surprised me with the amount of work they put into the thing.
