Thoughts on buying a used ps3?
I'm planning on picking one up just for watching blu-ray so I just need the 40 gig model and I would like to save some $$.
Never really heard of the ps3 having many issues so I was wondering if this was a good idea.

I bought a refurbished 60gb in Jan '08, no complaints.

Are you planning on picking up from Ebay or from a store such as Gamestop?
With Ebay we all know its a crapshoot but if you get a messed up system you can always go through the trouble of filing a dispute. I got a Wii off ebay, used. This was back when it was impossible to get and I got the console and Res. Evil 4 for under $300 so I was a little skeptical. Thankfully, everything was good and it still works perfectly.
If you go to Gamestop, at least they'll provide you with some protection if it craps out. I think they give you 30 days?

Without a warranty, I wouldn't pay over $100 for any used system. Now, with the 360, I know that the 1 yr. general/3 yr. RROD warranty can be transferred from the original owner to a person who buys it from them used. If there's a similar option with the PS3, I'd be ok with buying from something like eBay or Craig's List. Otherwise, I'd at least stick with a retailer that offers some kind of warranty on used systems.

Warranties are overrated. The only device in my house I've worried about having a warranty on is the 360.
I bought a 20gb PS3 on ebay for $340 shipped about 2 years ago and it does the trick for me. They are pretty reliable after all.

I bought a used PS3 (hardware emu) off of Craigs in a swap and am very happy with the transaction. If you are worried then meet someplace where you can see the PS3 working prior to the swap.

Bought my 60GB on Craiglist last year. No problems, but it was really lightly used. The only game data on the system was Guitar Hero 3 and Madden. Got it with an HDMI cable, two controllers and a Blu-Ray remote for $420.

Yep, I went to the person's home that was selling it on CL, verified it was working and a non-smoking home, then talked with the kid for a few minutes. All in all, well worth my $250 investment.
