Thoughts on buying a used ps3?

I'm planning on picking one up just for watching blu-ray so I just need the 40 gig model and I would like to save some $$.

Never really heard of the ps3 having many issues so I was wondering if this was a good idea.

I think it depends on how much you're saving?

I bought a refurbished 60gb in Jan '08, no complaints.

Re: Thoughts on buying a used ps3?

Are you planning on picking up from Ebay or from a store such as Gamestop?

With Ebay we all know its a crapshoot but if you get a messed up system you can always go through the trouble of filing a dispute. I got a Wii off ebay, used. This was back when it was impossible to get and I got the console and Res. Evil 4 for under $300 so I was a little skeptical. Thankfully, everything was good and it still works perfectly.

If you go to Gamestop, at least they'll provide you with some protection if it craps out. I think they give you 30 days?

I would hate to say it but you could even try CC. The one by me has 20% off systems too, which would be like $80 off.

I was thinking more of craigslist, I have seen the 40gig one go for around 275-300

Without a warranty, I wouldn't pay over $100 for any used system. Now, with the 360, I know that the 1 yr. general/3 yr. RROD warranty can be transferred from the original owner to a person who buys it from them used. If there's a similar option with the PS3, I'd be ok with buying from something like eBay or Craig's List. Otherwise, I'd at least stick with a retailer that offers some kind of warranty on used systems.

I'd say for it as long as you clear that it's legit and you get it for a good deal. New systems are overrated.

Warranties are overrated. The only device in my house I've worried about having a warranty on is the 360.

I bought a 20gb PS3 on ebay for $340 shipped about 2 years ago and it does the trick for me. They are pretty reliable after all.

I bought a used PS3 (hardware emu) off of Craigs in a swap and am very happy with the transaction. If you are worried then meet someplace where you can see the PS3 working prior to the swap.

Bought my 60GB on Craiglist last year. No problems, but it was really lightly used. The only game data on the system was Guitar Hero 3 and Madden. Got it with an HDMI cable, two controllers and a Blu-Ray remote for $420.

Dell is selling new 80GB for $319. I wouldn't buy used to save $40.

If you can go to their house and check it out, I would go this route. I hate systems from smoking homes, so that would be high on my checklist.

Yep, I went to the person's home that was selling it on CL, verified it was working and a non-smoking home, then talked with the kid for a few minutes. All in all, well worth my $250 investment.

If you're just looking for the Blu-ray capabilities, you may just want to buy a 2.0 stand-alone player.

I bought a used 60gb off of ebay last September when you could get 25% cashback. Haven't had any issues.
