Maybe when the DLC is released I'll be back to check how they are doing.
Wow. Never visited there. I'm gonna have to check that town out.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

Going to echo the Eternal Darkness stuff. Lots of awesome moments and effects in that game.

I found the end of Braid to be mind blowing.

Most of the Dark Brotherhood stuff in Oblivion left me saying WTH!?!

No More Heroes left me saying WTF at approx. 2-3 minute intervals. (And I LOVED every minute of it! )

Shadow of the Colossus made me say WTH in a much more awestruck manner.

Fallout 3, again not really a WTH moment, but kind of a 'wow' moment

Spoiler:
pressing the nuke button to blow up megaton, watching from tenpenny tower, Watching it in HD, it just rocked.

I still need to do that. I've been too good in that game already.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

The ending of Braid was the first thing that came to mind.

Also, one of the Duke Nukem games (almost positive it was 3D) during a boss fight when you actually rip off his head and shit down his neck. He even pulled out a newspaper and everything. That was classic.

Another vote for Eternal Darkness ... and I'll add the "walk through a room as your limbs begin to randomly fall off."

Wow ... I had totally forgotten about Conker's Bad Fur Day. I loved that game. Almost makes me want to dig out my N64 and play it again.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

Nothing, but nothing, is a total shock WTF moment as the one in GUITAR HERO: WORLD TOUR, during which
Spoiler:
Jimi Hendrix returns from the grave and nearly gives the lead singer a heart attack
.

Also, I kinda liked Metal Gear Solid 2, especially when
Spoiler:
the Colonel turns out to be an AI, and the game itself turns totally meta-game (visible hexes underneath Raiden's steps, phony baloney "Game Over" screens that come and go, etc.).

That game made me poop.

OK, I'll bite, what's that "erase save game" thing in Eternal Darkness? I've never played the game. I don't even know anything about that game.

Eternal Darkness has insanity effects where things happen that emulate your character going insane.

Spoiler:
There is one where it emulates you erasing your save game. It has the menu and gives you the option to delete your save file with the Yes/No options. Then it looks like you hit the wrong button and chose yes and even acts like you verified "Are you sure?" It then shows it being erased and iirc takes you to the main menu. After about 9 seconds it flashes back to where you were in the game and you realize it was an insanity effect and didn't really happen. A true heart in your throat moment in gaming.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

The game has 'Sanity' effects that distort the world/screen around you:

--Aural hallucinations like voices, knocking, screams, footsteps
--Arms and limbs fall off and start bleeding, character dies, then instantly comes back and screams
--Alex saw herself dead in a bathtub full of blood in the mansion and screams REALLY loud.
--bleeding walls
--screen tilts back and forth
-- etc.

Then there are ones that are outside gameplay to mess with you. I believe one made it appear the volume on your tv was going down, complete with volume bar on screen.

The coup de grace though is the 'Save game' one. Xmiyux explained it pretty well.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

That sounds really good.
I just checked the Wikipedia page for the game and it seems it was critically acclaimed but didn't sell well. "One the most underrated games of the last generation" they said.
I guess it should play without issue in the Wii, right?
Checking ebay it seems the game is widely available.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

D'oh! We shouldn't have spoiled it for you then. Very critically acclaimed. I wonder if Dennis Dyak and what's left of Silicon Knights will go back to a ED sequel since finishing the Too Human trilogy seems unlikely at this point. I know he voiced opinion about doing it at some point. IIRC, Nintendo holds the rights to the game though, so if there is a sequel, it'll be on a Nintendo platform.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

The ending of Cosmic Fantasy 2 was a great WTH moment:
Spoiler:
You spend the entire game searching for a girl kidnapped by the final boss. Eventually you have a fight with the final boss where he turns out to be invincible. He wipes your party out, and you wake up in a town. The girl you were looking for is there. She gives you a necklace and says, "I stole this and escaped. Break this in his presence. It will make him mortal." So you go back to the final boss, break the necklace and kill him. Then you go back to town and find that the girl is dead. Her nurse says "She didn't tell you that breaking the necklace would kill her too." Roll credits.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

Killer7, the entire game is very strange. I've never played anything like it.

Pick up a copy and see for yourself. I can't imagine any other game topping it for bizarre-ness.

Surprised nobody mentioned Vault 112 in Fallout 3. And the ending to FFX.

Re: Your favorite WTH moments in games

I just remembered another WTH moment. MGS4:
Spoiler:
In one of the end acts, the screen goes completely blanks and you switch over to ps1 metal gear solid. You actually got to play for a minute before waking up from Snake dreaming

The problem with that quest was that it was so well done that I had a hard time getting back into the game proper afterwards.

Yep. I'd have to say quite a few of my WTH moments were from this entire series. Nemesis crashing through walls!
