Known PS3 issues ....

I will be getting a 400 dollar gift card and ive decided to get a ps3 but i wannak now if there are any issues i should look out for any issue no matter how tiny id like to know

also what games do u guys think i should get ? what are a few good recommendations ?

Blu rays aswell ... whats a good bunch to start out with ????

DarthVong 01-03-09 01:11 AM

The issue has been overheating that I have read.

Basically keep dust out of it and where ever you put it make sure it has plenty of breathing room.

musick 01-03-09 01:33 AM

One issue is it will cause you to spend a lot of money on games on BDs.

Other than that it should improve your spelling and punctuation.

DarthPrime 01-03-09 01:36 AM

The main thing I've heard about lately is the Blu-ray drive going out after awhile.

My friend recently paid Sony $150 to get his PS3 repaired because the drive died. He had it about 18 months, and it was used a lot. Mainly for gaming, but also Blu-rays and DVDs...

Spiderbite 01-03-09 01:44 AM

I have a friend that had his PS3 for around 9 months (he only uses it for BDs) and the USB connections quit working. I have no idea if that has ever happened to anyone else though.

lovgun7 01-03-09 05:01 AM

thanks for the quick replies

If he only used if for BDs, how did he notice the USB ports were bad? What did he use them for? If he used it for charging his controller, I always use the port on my DVR for that, or he could use a PC.

Frenzy 01-03-09 07:27 AM

First game recommendation: Uncharted.

Couple of people in my extended family got PS3s this Christmas, for the BD player mostly. But here's what I now know about a few games:

LittleBigPlanet is a lot of fun for everyone. Very cute. Great co-op multiplayer. Highly recommended by me.

Burnout: Paradise is a pretty good racing game. Currently at the $30 mark.

Madden 09 is good, if you like football.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Ton of people seem to like this one. Ended up on a few year end best lists. I've got it, but haven't had a chance to play it yet.

The Bus 01-03-09 09:45 AM

The only issues the PS3 has is that most people buy the 360 version of a game (if it's for both systems) so its hard to play with friends.

The hardware issues of the 360 have gotten me really fed up with it.

doubledown44 01-03-09 10:12 AM

I've had my PS3 for two and a half years and I have never had a single problem with it. Also, I turn it off when I am not using it. I would advise doing that.

stingermck 01-03-09 10:19 AM

Yeah my main issue is the unreal amount of money I spend on blu-ray, games, and psn downloads.

Jamieson22 01-03-09 10:42 AM

I just use Blockbuster Online (insert Netflix here if you wish) for my BluRay needs. Guess the only one I want to buy is Goonies but it is import only :(

As far as games, grab Uncharted and Resistance Fall of Man. Those are the two I recently started with and they are both cheap and good.

tbird2340 01-03-09 11:14 AM

I just ordered my PS3 last week (should be here Monday). Got a great deal ($150 Sony rebate and 15% off w/ free shipping at Dell)..

I have a 360 and that is my main system.. Sold my Wii as I never play it anymore.. Should I buy the extended service contract for the PS3? I know it is a must for the 360 but didn't know if it was the same for the PS3..

Also, for games.. Radio Shack has some good ones on clearance now.. I picked up Ratchet and Clank for $20. They also had Metal Gear Solid 4 for $20 but were out at the ones around me. YMMV.

my friend had the same issue with both of his 40GB PS3s.

I've had my 60GB PS3 since the summer after launch and I don't have a single problem with it. I use it mostly as a media extender and PSN game console. I only play BDs and games on it occasionally, as the cost of BDs is still, in my opinion, through the roof.

And why no BD games more often? In my opinion there a lot of interesting exclusive PS3 game (too much for my wallet).

darkside 01-03-09 02:46 PM

I've had my 60GB model for 2 years and it works great. I've put at least 1000 hours on it with BD movies and gaming. However, there have been a disturbing number of complaints among 40GB and 80GB owners about the BD drives failing. In most cases the unit was under warranty, but some people were just over the year and had to pay $150 for repair. I'm hoping this isn't a widespread problem like the Microsoft RROD, but the PS forums have had a few threads about it including things to try if your system is out of warranty. It only bothers me because this was such a major issue with the PS2 and Sony really never fixed it until the slim PStwo was released.

I still love my PS3 and think its a solid gaming system and a pretty decent home theater PC with its high quality BD 2.0, upscaling DVD and divx playback.

Maxflier 01-03-09 03:15 PM

I mentioned elsewhere before the issue of my friend getting a PS3 and it not being backwards compatible.
Well the other day I was over there and we tried to play Socom (which she got for X-Mas) and it would not let us play the game AT ALL (not even single player) without having a Playstation network account. They don't have internet access so are you telling me she can't even play a game that someone spent $60 bucks on?

RockyMtnBri 01-03-09 03:19 PM

I'm another 60 GB owner (now 320 GB) for two years plus with not one issue.

Dr Mabuse 01-03-09 03:49 PM

I bought the original 60GB at launch, with the hardware backwards compatibility.

The BD drive went out after a year and half or so.

I bought the Best Buy Extended warranty so I got a brand new 40 GB(now 320GB) and a $250 dollar Best buy gift card on the exchange. Which rocked!.

All I lost was the compatibility but I still have my PS2.

I do recommend the Best Buy extended warranty for obvious reasons.

Same here, no problems yet (knock on wood). Much more reliable than my 360...

Socom Confromtation is an online only multiplayer game - it tells you this on the packaging - no single player at all.

cruzness 01-03-09 04:21 PM

80 gig for over a year and a half and no issues with heavy use of the BD player - thanks to Netflix.

lovgun7 01-03-09 04:34 PM

kool thanks to every one

uncharted and resistence was already on my list

i probably wont invest to much money on games (i say that now though lol) because even though the 360 has so many hardware issues i still think it has the better games

target usually has good games on clearence so ill look into that

the only thing i really dont want to break down on me is the Blu Ray drive ... and since ill be getting my ps3 at circuit city i wont be buying a product protection plan because of all the hastle they gave me with my 360 (im using the 400 dollar gift card they FINALLY agreed to send me to buy the ps3)

i know the ps2 compatibility is out for the newer models and im fine with that since i also have my good ol' slim ps2

but yeah sometime this week ill own my 3rd xbox 360 and my first ps2 ...

ill also be looking out for the 360 jasper chip ...

movie diva 01-03-09 04:40 PM

I have had my 80gb for a year, and I have not had any problems.

Ok, I took the wording on the packaging to mean that multiplayer games were online-only, never realized this game had no single player campaign.

:distract:

i hate it when a game says "xbox live" but it wont play on online multiplayer ... The Simpsons Game being one ...

chuckd21 01-03-09 08:19 PM

No issues here, and I've had mine for over a year now.

Although, the thing does use as much power as a fridge, so there's that...

I take that back, I think the Blu ray drive died today, looked a movie last night, went to play Little Big Planet today and nothing.:gah:

Dr Mabuse 01-20-09 03:45 AM

Shop smart, shop S Mart

Always by the Best Buy extended warranty as I stated above.

I actually made $250 bucks when my PS3 went down thanks to the extended warranty deal.

I wouldn't buy a console without one.

Lost no game data as I do back ups.

Re: Known PS3 issues ....

That may be true for the PS3 since it's rare that something goes wrong, but for the 360 you would have to buy a new warranty every time you bring your system in for a new one. That adds up.

60GB...heavy use for both movies and games...even some web browsing with wireless keyboard...no issues whatsoever.

Recommended games:

Little Big Planet
Uncharted
Bioshock
Rock Band 2
Wipeout HD

Blu-Rays:

Dark Knight (the IMAX stuff is amazing)
Planet Earth (just beautiful)
Matrix Trilogy

Yeah I never bought a 360 for the reasons you state.

I bought a new warranty on my new PS3.

This is a pretty good list for new PS3 owners. If you have a PC then that's the place to play Bioshock, and Rock Band is not an exclusive, of course.

Otherwise, LBP, Uncharted and Wipeout are the only games to get on the PS3.

Actually, the reason I bought a PS3 instead of a 360 is that all my friends and everyone I work with own PS3's and not XBOX's.

We're constantly getting each other to buy the same games when they are on sale, so we play online as a group.

My 40Gig drive died just before my warranty expired, got it fixed for free. Never had any issues before that, and seems fine now.

What about Valkyria Chronicles?

I got this game for Christmas and I'm loving it.

The BD Drive on my 80-Gig started freezing up during movies (I could watch an hour and then the picture would freeze) 11 months after I bought it. Sent it off under warranty and Sony returned the same system to me with a fixed drive in exactly 7 days. Other than that I've had no problems.
