Thanks for the info. Like you, I always have my finger on the button. That and watching your radar at ALL times are two key ways to improve. It used to bug me watching my roommates get killed when I notice the orange dot approaching and they don't. I tell them it's like a rear view mirror - you don't have to watch it but it goes a long way in staying alive, or something like that.

yeah I don't watch my radar enough. I try to, but it's distracting a lot for me. And I do keep my finger on the trigger, but I'm old and slow :) I'll have to try and get the autoaim to work. So, you just aim down your sights, and then if you hit the aim trigger again it pops to the closest target if there is one?

there's been times where I got the drop on 2 or 3 guys and I really think I should have killed em all, but I just spray and pray and usually just get one before the other 2 spin around and shoot me in the eye.

His might not be, but mine sure is. I die a million times in this game. But I don't blame campers or noob tubes or long range 1887s. I'm just terrible at the game and have poor reflexes.

My k:d is sitting at 1.11, which isn't too terribly bad considering the number of people that play under my Gamertag. I've got 3 roommates and we've got 3 buddies that hang with us, two of which had never played the first game, or any console shooter that I know of. Needless to say, our k:d started off pitiful and I remember being slightly proud that we had managed to come from around +400 deaths back to even. They've all improved tremendously since then but it will take a lot of work to get our k:d up past 1.5, our initial goal - mainly because we're on the 3rd prestige and have something like 18,400 kills and 16,500 deaths. Rounds like 20-10 are becoming pretty common but even at that rate it would take 100 games just to raise our k:d to 1.16.

+1. No one ever asks, but I'm sure a lot of guys are wondering why someone at level 69 is so suck ass for their team. Granted, I do hate all those guys you listed, even when I tube or shotgun myself. That's only natural because they're killing me.

I can assure you I have hundreds more SCAR-H (I can't get into using the much loved M16) kills than C4 kills. But, if me planting C4 on a captured domination point ensures my team will win, than so be it. That's why I have a class for any situation my team may need me to occupy.

I'm guessing you also think that players using sniper rifles for...wait...for...it...sniping, are also not playing the game?

You're probably the player who runs around trying to rack up kills rather than helping with the objectives...but to each his own. Maybe you should practice more and whine less.

How do you think I learned this tactic! Besides, with the killcam, you can hide for a little bit, but someone will eventually find you. When that happens I'll switch from one of my "guard" classes to a "kill" class and help that way.

I'd say I learned, but I just got pissed off at a sniper, made it my mission to kill him once, went 1/7 in the process (the 1 wasn't him) and rage quit. I have all kinds of logic anywhere but in the game once something pisses me off. And that's great news for people who plant C4 and claymores.

I looked it up, I've been using the M4A1. Seems decent enough and I have almost everything unlocked. I got the thermal scope, but I kinda don't like using it. seems to zoom in too far compared to the normal scope. I have that paired with the RPG. And I just made a new class with the Barrett 50 cal and PP2000, but I found I've been using the pistol a lot more when I play that class. I guess I'm just more a run & gun & spray & pray type. And I don't really know the levels enough to know where good snipe spots are.

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - No Russian in this thread

I'll have to try one game and just run around and no scope people with a Barrett, just so they can still call me a camper.

I have a class for r-n-g and my results end up even. I don't find it that fun and my thumb hates me.

I get that way once in a while too. By strange coincidence it always seems to happen in Quarry. There is almost always somebody sniping from that center capture point. And on occasion it will bug the heck out of me and I make it my mission to get him. Almost always results in numerous deaths by me!

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - No Russian in this thread

Let me ask this... I'm a long time gamer, but I've just never really liked FPS's. I've always found them twitchy and kind of hard to play. I never even liked Halo much and haven't played more than 10 minutes of it total because it didn't appeal to me.

That said, at my friend's house a couple weeks ago, he popped in MW2, and we played a lot of the Special Ops modes, and I had a blast. I ran out and purchased the first MW, and powered through the single player mode, and really enjoyed it.

I just picked up MW2 myself and am intending to play through single player in the next few days.

I enjoyed Spec Ops so much that I really want to try the multiplayer, but it's a bit intimidating for someone that's never tried it before, so I have a list of questions I hope I don't get flamed for, since this is generally a pretty friendly crowd.

1. Is the online learning curve steep? Can a new person contribute immediately, or do I need to significantly "level up?"

2. Is there a best mode to learn on? I'm leary initially of joining team-based games because I don't want to be a hindrance.

3. Do I just jump in, or is there more I should know?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I got the game on release day and hadn't ever played a COD before. I'd only ever played one multiplayer game online (Resistance 2) and felt the same way you do. The learning curve is pretty steep since there's so many of people playing but just keep at it and after a couple days, things will start to click. I'd go with Team Deathmatch or Domination (both via Ground War) since there'll be more players and you'll have an easier time.....

The single player and special ops are a good way of learning this and that, but the AI doesn't compare to dudes who play the game 24/7 so it'll be a bit different. You can't stand around and should avoid main routes. Other than that, it'll start to grow on you. Get a gun and work up upgrading it and so on and, after unlocking and seeing other people's loadouts, you'll start to figure things out.

You should consider Real Triggers as well as thumb grips (if you're on ps3),

Even if your new to multiplayer fps games i wouldn't worry too much. Just get in there and start playing. You will get your butt shot off 100 times at first just like everyone else, then you will start to figure out the maps more and get your style down. Just don't get discouraged when you die a lot :) I've only been at it for 3 days and I finally feel like I'm starting to improve a bit.

I've never been big on FPS multiplayer, so here are my thoughts.

you can definitely contribute immediately. First, figure out which type of weapon you're most comfortable with.

2. Is there a best mode to learn on? I'm leary initially of joining team-based games because I don't want to be a hindrance.
Definitely go for team-based games. Team Deathmatch and Domination are still my favourites. Just don't stand right in front of your teammates. Play some Free-for-all when you feel like you're ready.

3. Do I just jump in, or is there more I should know?
Jump in! Have fun! Expect to die a LOT until you get a good feel for the maps.

Make sure to sit in one corner with an assault rifle or LMG. People will love you. ;)

Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - No Russian in this thread

As others have said, just jump in and give it a shot. Hell, play some Free-For-All in the beginning so you can just shoot anything that moves.

Pick up other peoples guns and give them a try - see what style you like.

Then just get in a party with some good folks. I play with guys who could carry an entire team of beginners and will happily play with newbies and explain what the perks do and good strategies.

Also, in the beginning, set your killstreaks to 3,4, and 5 since you probably won't be racking up many and a UAV or a Care Package could help your team a good bit!

I always hated FPS until this game, and was scared to death to play online. One thing that helped me out was playing with a DVDTer. I tried to keep close to him and figure out what was what, and that really helped playing team based matches. When he wasn't on my team, I learned a lot about getting shot and stabbed. Thanks for the first part, The Bus! And even if you don't have an experienced player (I don't count), stick close to someone so they can cover your butt.

As everyone else said, have fun. You're not the only newbie, and you won't be one for long. I have people all the time who try to stab me at the beginning of Team Deathmatch because they think they got dropped into the middle of a bunch of enemies.

Did you not follow Capt. Price's instructions and avoid open areas.. meaning stick to piloting the boat between the rock faces and near to rock walls?

Yep.

Spoiler:
And you have to be Mario Andretti on the steering too. Thread through those tall rock upcroppings and stay wide open on the gas all the time to keep yourself out of sight of the 'copter. In the canyon areas how well you take the corners and how smooth you are in steering affects you greatly. If you are steering sloppy he will steadily pull away from you until you lose.

The point of Domination is not to get kills, it is to control the points.
