Anyone pick up "Age of Booty"?

I've been really wanting to play Civilizations Revolution after finding the demo, but didn't realize it was a full-priced game, so expensive...is Age of Booty a decent alternative for $10?

Also; I rented Mirror's Edge the other night. Definitely not as good as I expected it to be. I don't recommend buying it at all. It's somewhat fun, but it's also annoying at times because of how precise your jumps have to be to grab onto things. It's...mediocre.

They talked about it on 1up and IGN podcasts and it sounds like a tech demo more than a game. 5 hours to beat the game. After that it is just rerunning the levels for speed. Every review complained about the combat system and the closed arenas they stick you in during the second half that kill the whole running idea of the game.

Sounds like a big waste of $60 when other games like Fallout 3 and Little Big Planet have been recently released.

ebay!

I found civrev on there for a little over 30 bucks I think and have been playing it close to everyday in some capacity. I've never played any other civ, but found this one a lot of fun and well worth the money I spent on it. With ebay's 10% coupon right now, or live 25% cashback, you could probably find an even better deal.

As for age of booty, haven't played it, but I am wishing there was a demo. (I've also decided to no longer buy PSN items until either a sale, bundle, or I simply can't wait any longer.)

I picked up Age of Booty yesterday in a moment of weakness. I haven't played yet, but I'll post something after I get into it a little. I still don't know anyone else that has it, and the reviews suggest it's much better in multiplayer. We'll see I guess.

I noticed that the target here in Austin, TX had the 160gig PS3 which comes with Uncharted Drake's Fortune. Its in a red and white box. It's listed for $499

fujishig 11-19-08 10:51 AM

Target also has Civ Rev on clearance... I want to say it was 35 bucks, but YMMV as with all Target clearance deals.

So I finally ran out of HDD space when I was forced to install over 3 Gigs of data to run the new Naruto game. It's a beautiful game, but it's still a glorified fighting game, and there are still load times... you also must install it to play it. Argh. Guess I'll have to upgrade to a bigger drive... how much of a pain is it to copy data over?

If it's the same price at the boat-load of 360 copies I saw today, then it's actually $29.98. However, copies of R&C: Tools and Uncharted were $41.98.

Civ Rev is, without question, worth $30.

If you have an external hard drive and a pc to format part of the drive then it is really easy. The longest part is the actual copy time that it takes but that depends on how much memory you have used on your original hard drive. It took me maybe 10 minutes of hands on time for me to swap my original 60gb hard drive to a 320 gb hard drive. It is nice to not have to worry about space anymore. I enjoy having close to 400 complete albums on my PS3 making it a jukebox of sorts. Let us know if you need any help.

I'm keeping my eye on Ratchet and Uncharted, but during the holiday season it's highly doubtful they will still be around to hit the sub $20 mark.

naitram 11-20-08 02:46 AM

Thanks for the opinions everyone. For $30 I might have to pick up Civilizations for the long, cold winter. I'll check my local Target.

I hope someone can answer my quick question. I just got an exteral HDD for backup purposes, what format does the drive need to be for the PS3 to see it (I assume NTFS is ok, but wanted to check before I format it)?

Also, should I create a partition on the drive just for my PS3 backup or can that be on the same partition as windows backup files?

XavierMike 11-20-08 08:22 AM

It needs to be FAT 32.

It must be FAT32. You'll need a utility to format it, since Windows limits you to 32GB.

I use this one: http://shareme.com/details/fat32-formatter.html

You can put other files on the same partition as the PS3 backup. The PS3 backup will go in a folder.

My closest target officially sucks for PS3 stuff. They use to carry clearance items, and now they have a couple of old games "on sale"......for $54.99.

fujishig 11-20-08 11:34 AM

Target actually started clearancing PS3 games really quickly... most likely because of the holiday game rush and the fact that their PS3 section (at least in all the Targets near me) is only one case. The new Golden Axe and the Sony NBA title were discounted to 41.98 within a couple of weeks after they launched. Granted, both are pretty crappy games, but that was a fast markdown.

darkside 11-20-08 04:30 PM

I was able to grab MLB 08 for $15, but there haven't been any other PS3 titles on clearance I have wanted. I am shocked at how fast they get clearanced. I think NBA 09 is already on clearance.

My friend is trying to set up his new 80GB PS3 to his Philips 42TA648BX/37 but we hit a major snag. He has it hooked up via HDMI but, despite the fact that his set is a 1080p display, we can't seem to get his PS3 set to anything beyond 480p.

His PS3 is already running on the 2.50 firmware update. The TV sort of seems to recognize that it's receiving a 1080p signal but refuses to output any video and the PS3 simply reverts back to 480p. As you can guess, he doesn't even get to watch BD's on it due to the forced resolution cap.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Michael Corvin 11-21-08 12:03 PM

Question:

Is there a setting to disable stretching on DVDs somewhere or is that something I'm missing on my TV? My PS3 is hooked up via HDMI but it always defaults to stretching P&S sources.

Seems like something totally obvious I'm missing, so does anyone have a clue?

The Best thing I can think to do would be to turn the PS3 on by holding down the power button for about five seconds until it beebs, that will reset the video settings. Then just go through the automatic setup options for video.

BD/DVD Settings --> Upscale

Do you have it set to Full Screen or Normal? If you have it selected to Full Screen, select "Normal".

Michael Corvin 11-21-08 12:59 PM

Thanks gryffinmaster, I'll check that when I get home.

RocShemp 11-21-08 01:55 PM

We did try the auto-detect and tried to reset the video settings. But it keeps defaulting to 480p and wont output anything beyond that to the set. I think maybe it's the HDMI cable (perhaps it's defective) or, worse, the TV. I tried helping him by following the same procedure I did with my PS3. It should have been a snap for him but it wasn't.

redbill 11-21-08 01:57 PM

did you try 720p or 1080i just to see what happens?

RocShemp 11-21-08 03:20 PM

Yup. Nothing would go through. :(
