The atmosphere of Dead Space is just dark and dank, though. Bioshock had a whole culture to build on. And all those audio logs you pick up are certainly reminiscent of finding the tape diaries of the various Bioshock characters.
Again, I'm not saying Dead Space is bad, but I've noticed a lot of Bioshock comparisons, both here and in my few hours with the game, and I'm not as impressed. Perhaps the difference is that Bioshock felt new and unique. You don't see those kind of designs in video games. Dead Space, on the other hand, is not the first "trapped on a ship with killer aliens" video game out there, and like many of those, the designs are reminiscent of Alien, Aliens, Event Horizon, and other sci-fi and horror films. But I'm not trying to make this a Bioshock vs. Dead Space thread, so I won't comment on it anymore, I don't want to derail the thread. Another thing is through the logs in Bioshick, you felt as if you knew the people, and they were telling their story. Fontaine, Ryan, Atlas, Ryan's girl (I forgot her name), Atlas' girl, etc. In Dead Space, it's just random doctors and engineers. I do like the video logs, though. The easiest way to compare the two games for me is asking one question: Would you play it through again after you finish it? Bioshock, the answer is yes, and I have twice. Dead Space is no. When I finish this, it will be traded in or sold. Awesome game, but not worthy of a second run through, IMO. |

Since I'm bored, here are some other games already out that I currently like more than Dead Space (keeping in mind that I haven't finished it and thus am willing to concede that my opinion could change for the better): No More Heroes Super Smash Bros. Brawl The World Ends With You Lego Indiana Jones Lego Batman Civilization Revolution Sam and Max: Season 2 Spore And that's not including games I have but haven't played yet, like Crisis Core and Chains of Olympus on the PSP. Is Dead Space one of the better games of the year? From what I've played so far, it seems to be. Is it the best game of the year? Not in my personal opinion. |
I really liked the balance system of Lego Indy, where you really needed to use each character and switch back and forth regularly. Lego Star Wars is great, because it was the first one, but at times the non-Jedi characters often felt useless. Not so in Lego Indy. I also thought the puzzles were more imaginative. Overall, I'd say it's my favorite of the Lego games.

Finally got through the asteroid bit at the end of level four and have started in on level 5. This game just keeps getting better! Think I'll take a break for a couple of days and go back to SW:TFU as well as checking out Bioshock, Far Cry 2 & Spidey:Web of Shadows.
|
I wonder how much easier the "free" suit makes the game? I got the suit as soon as it was available, and I haven't been able to buy another suit since then, as it's better than the ones that are available in the store. I think it's a level 5 suit...
Also, the suit that you can actually buy from Live Marketplace and the PS store... is that any better? It's also a level 5 suit... |
Supposedly the free suit and the Scorpion suit (which I should have gotten, friggin Gamestop) are the same, they just look different.
|
My friend bought the Scorpion suit. It looks exaclty like the free one, except the faceplate on the helmet has red light, instead of green.

There is another part like that coming up soon, so don't get too comfortable ;)

I was playing this again earlier after giving Fable II a break. I am on chapter 10, and I keep dying to that worm that drags you into the hole. I know there have been at least two of them previously, but this one I can't seem to beat. Very frustrating.

plus. *The others are M.U.L.E., Seven Cities of Gold, Pirates, Ultima 4, Bard's Tale, Baldur's Gate 2, Thief 2, Civilization 4, and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. If you disagree, you are wrong. |
This game rocks.
I'm really enjoying it. |

You can also click the right thumb stick (on the 360 -- there's a different button to hit on the PS3) and a blue line will appear on screen showing you where to go.
You can find schematics that let you buy ammo at the stores, but yeah -- you definitely can't waste ammo. At the same time, if something is coming at you SHOOT IT!!! HOLY MOTHER OF GOD SHOOT AND DON'T STOP FIRING UNTIL IT STOPS MOVING!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!! what weapons are you guys using? I have the line gun and flamethrower. I am disappointed in the flamethrower. it is really more of a DamageOverTime weapon and gives the monsters too much time to get on top of you. Is the rifle any good? which weapon should i spend the most power nodes on? |

I finished the game last night. I got frustrated toward the end of the last chapter, but I think it was the fact that I was a little low on ammo, and there wasn't a store or save point that I saw nearby. I really enjoyed the game though. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would, after watching the gameplay videos. The story was pretty good, and the sound and atmosphere were awesome. I think the sound is what made the game creepy.

Wow that sounded dirty. |

I like the line gun, the ripper, and the trusty plasma torch. The flamethrower is good against the little tiny guys that swarm you, but in general I agree with you.
Also, I just realized yesterday that, in addition to the little xbox-looking crates and white light lockers, there are little lockers on the ground with white lights that you can also open. |

I wonder... does ammo for a particular weapon only spawn once you purchase that weapon? I've been holding off purchasing the flamethrower, for instance, because I haven't found any ammo for it yet.

I used all the weapons, and got the 30 kills achievement with each one. I am still stuck on the worm part. Any suggestions?
By the way, I see myself finishing this very soon if anyone that hadn't picked it up yet wanted to take it off my hands. |
I'm in chapter 9 now. How is the end of the game? the last 3 chapters? Are they long? short? fast?
Just wondering if I'd be able to finish it this weekend. |
I think the last 3 chapters are about the same length as the rest of the chapters. I played through them the other night, and I think it took me maybe 4 hours. You should probably be able to finish it over the weekend.

I tried out the force gun... seems a bit weak. Also, despite the game telling you about it in the beginning, I completely forgot that every gun has a secondary fire. That asteroid shooting part was crap... move the camera closer so you can see out the window better. Also, is there a way to know when your gun is going to overheat? |
I beat the game last night...very cool ending. I liked this game alot, as for comparing it to Bioshock...very similar in the audio/video logs, weapon upgrades, creepiness, the suit, etc... When I beat the game it unlocked all kinds of goodies, including 10 nodes, 50,000 credits, the level 6 suit, and 'impossible mode' I believe it was called. I wasn't going to play through it again, but there's some achievements I still need--easy ones, like 30 kills with each weapon. Oh yeah, ZERO-G basketball is frustrating. I get to the pads no problem, but I can never find the damn ball & the timer runs out.
