Re: King Hippo is back! (i.e. New Punch-Out game for the Wii)
Personally though I don't see this game as an actual sequel. To me it is more of a reimagining of the NES game in 3D. This game isn't even called Punch-Out 3 but just simply Punch-Out.
There hasn't been a Punch-Out game in 15+ years, so it could just be Nintendo testing the market to see how well it would do. Maybe if it does well, then we will get an actual full-on sequel with new characters.
Gabby Jay was definitely one of the best characters in SPO. The "Yay!" always made me laugh too. Supposedly, Glass Joe trained him, and Gabby's one win was against Glass Joe. I would love to see that fight.

If this game does really well I can see Nintendo having Next Level Games release a Super Punch-Out!! on the Wii.

If real (and I think it's a pretty safe bet that it's real now), the following images are Dream Fight spoilers:

So the rumors of a 14th hidden fighter are apparently true.
That isn't the Dream fight though. From what I understand, the 14th character is unlocked by beating TD mode.
It would be cool if there was

Who is to say there is just one hidden fighter... There could be a bunch of hidden fighters. I remember the interview with the developers saying they filled the disc to the brim with unlockable stuff. There could be a whole unlockable special circuit. It would be funny if there was just so all the people nitpicking about there being 'only' 13 fighters would have to eat their words.

I'd gladly eat my words - but those who are fine with just 13 fighters shouldn't bother to unlock the extra ones, since they're supposedly fine with just 13 - otherwise they were full of shit.

Seriously, just stop being a baby. There are thirteen fighters and if you go through it once, you get to fight them again with different moves, harder difficultly, etc. That makes for 26 fighters. And if there is a single unlockable character, that makes for 27. If that isn't to your liking, then don't buy the game.

You wouldn't be so overly defensive, jumping the gun as to my intentions if you weren't so insecure.
Also,
That's a false analogy.
The more appropriate relation would be to Mario Galaxy's levels, not the character you play as, since the opponents in Punch Out are more like levels - and revisiting them is a cop-out akin to revisiting slightly made-over levels.

What Punch-Out is doing is no different than any other game where you fight the same villain on different occasions; sure, the name is the same when you first fight Bowser, but is he the same enemy you fight to win the game? In name, surely he is, but in abilities, powers, and skills necessary to defeat him, not in the least. That is exactly what Punch-Out is doing.

Would I have wanted them to include more than 13 fighters? Of course.
But I am so happy that they did not screw up a legendary franchise (which they could have done easily) and that I finally have another Wii game to play...and for $40? Money...

Re: King Hippo is back! (i.e. New Punch-Out game for the Wii)
Something I just remembered about the old NES and SNES Punch-Out games: many of the fighters were just palette swaps. (i.e. Put a clown suit on Bear Hugger and he became Mad Clown.)
What made these palette swapped characters different was not the name. What made them different was that they had different fighting skills and moves.
Title Defense mode in the Wii game is not just a simple "hard" mode. The fighters all have different fighting skills and moves. Just watch a video of TD Glass Joe and tell me that that is the old Joe we all know and love. It isn't. TD Joe has new moves including fake out punches and will hand you your ass.
To me, this effectively makes them new characters since there really is very little difference between them and the palette swapped name changes in the old games.

It's taking a lot of self-control not to click any of these spoilers, but I want this game to have at least a few surprises for me.
In other news, the game is in stores tomorrow!

Might take a bit to get use to hold up before throwing a punch to punch high, or using the stick to dodge left and right but I think they wanted more consistency with these control settings. Looking forward to playing this classic over and over again like I did its Super Nes version.

Amazon still hasn't shipped my order yet... and the site says "In stock on May 21, 2009."
Good thing my b-day isn't until the 28th... so I'd have to wait anyways.
