Really enjoying it so far. Having masters for Killer Queen, Thunderkiss, Beast and the Harlot, etc... are proving to be rather clutch...

Hey! It's Ghostbusters Day. Weren't we supposed to get Ray Parker Jr's theme in one of these games?

Live is down, so we couldn't find out if we wanted to!

The rumor was that it was supposed to be in Rock Band.

Smash Hits is a double edged sword for me. Nice to play some of the older songs again, and get to fill out the other instrumental experience, but there are a number of songs in the later tiers that I really never needed to play again ever due to either disliking them, or playing them so much when our song libraries were so much more limited.

Re: General Music Game Discussion Thread (Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Rock Revolution, et

I was playing through my (free) rental copy of GH: Smash Hits tonight and two things came to my mind:

1. I don't like how some of the songs have been re-charted (for the worse IMO)....

2. There are A LOT more songs here than I realized that are already available in RB on disc or as DLC!!
Hit Me With Your Best Shot, The Trooper, Message In A Bottle, YYZ, Round And Round, Electric Eye, Take Me Out, Monkey Wrench, More Than A Feeling, Carry On Wayward Son, Laid To Rest....there's 11 of them right there, which is almost 25% of the total songs in the entire game! This disc will definitely have to hit the $20 or below mark before I make a purchase now....

Good to know. I hadn't been paying that close attention.

Yeah, me neither! But as I was playing through the list, I kept thinking "damn, this seems really familiar" (and not in the hey it was from GH1 or GH2 way)....

I know it is a different company, and they probably couldn't care less what the other guy is offering, as they are just in it to make as much $$ as they can....but geez, you'd think they'd realize their target audience probably plays the other series too, and they could sell more discs by offering songs that are not already available by the other guy....sadly they had many others to choose from that could have differentiated themselves, rather than duplicated what is already offered elsewhere....

Re: General Music Game Discussion Thread (Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Rock Revolution, et

I ended up selling mine (actually made a profit of $2).

I really enjoyed it and I will definitely buy it again when it gets down to $20. I think I ended up having 18 songs I enjoyed. I think it was a small step back from GH:M but that was mainly because a different group handled this one and it showed in some of the charts. For every 4 songs that were charted correctly, 1 was just off.

If Lego isn't exportable, I think I am probably going to wait to get everything used from now on (expect for The Beatles which I will buy new..and I am not even a big fan). I am buying less and less DLC (in part because Harmonix is continuing to pick the wrong songs, not artists) and I think my interest/novelty in the plastic instrument genre is starting to fade a little.

AFAIK, this is still the de facto thread for GH5. That is until someone creates one in Mid-July when the full setlist hits and "can't believe" no one is talking about it.

Anyway, Destructoid has some good speculation on some other tracks based on the ESRB lyric listing: http://www.destructoid.com/guitar-he...e-137473.phtml

“He’s gonna do another strip tease” - Lust for Life, Iggy Pop
“Light Me up a cigarette” - What I Got, Sublime
“I’m so horny” - Lithium, Nirvana

All great tracks.

Lust for Life is a HUGE get for me...Love the song and always reminds me of Ewan McGregor's huge grin.

Moulin Rogue always reminds me of Ewan McGregor's huge talent.

Speaking of Trainspotting, I think Perfect Day would be such an awesome song to have for vocalists. Of course, we're going to need to wait for Piano Bar Hero for that.

This doesn't sound good for the rest of Nevermind coming to Rock Band. Dammit!

You know what always bugged me, when people misspelled the game "Rouge" Squadron, now we've got people calling the movie Moulin "Rogue".

Haha, I didn't mean to misspell it, I just transposed the letters cuz I typed too fast and I'm too used to my browser catching stuff like that. Obviously that one got through

Re: General Music Game Discussion Thread (Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Rock Revolution, et

Anyone have any idea if GH5 will have new/improved instruments or will it just be the existing ones repackaged?

My WT guitar is starting to drop strums. I use it in both RB and GH. I use the GH3 guitar as a backup sometimes but in RB the starpower goes off on its own sometimes. Too sensitive.

Re: General Music Game Discussion Thread (Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Rock Revolution, et

Before Guitar Hero and Rock Band was another phenomenon of the music gaming genre: Dance Dance Revolution. Konami's "dancing" game bundled a peripheral and captured the media's attention with its kinetic "exergaming" play. Over the years, the franchise has dwindled in relevance, as gamers got tired of stomping their feet to moving arrows. Each iteration of the series brought new songs, but the gameplay turned stale, and gamers eventually put their peripherals in the closet.

The same might be happening to the current slate of music games. NPD reports (via Gamasutra) that revenue for the Guitar Hero franchise have dropped 34% year over year. Even worse, the Rock Band franchise has dropped 67%. (Although, it should be noted that the Rock Band series has not had a major console release this year.)

Jesse Divnich of EEDAR argues that "the music and rhythm genre is being monetized more closely in terms of a pop-culture fad," which explains the increasing number of releases we see from the Guitar Hero franchise. He argues that the window of opportunity for making money is limited and that both Activision and MTV Games are "[striking] when the iron is hot." The upcoming The Beatles: Rock Band and Guitar Hero 5 may make a big splash this holiday season, but it might not be long until gamers put away the plastic instruments and look for the next big thing.
Just how much longer can this last really?

Neversoft ruined it with the never ending releases. They know it wont last so grab as much cash as possible and move on to the next thing.

HMX at least thinks long term with DLC and RBN. But if people stop playing then its really all for nothing.

I have a feeling that the Beatles Rock Band will give a much-needed boost to this genre.

This and Lego will certainly help HMX financially this year. I just don't know how much longer they can remain relevant to consumers without a true successor to RB2.

The only thing that they can offer to really counter the massive onslaught of GH releases is RB3.

I don't think those NPD reports include DLC sales, which is where Rock Band probably makes most of its money. They release a lot of songs on a weekly basis and there's much less overhead involved, so they can keep chugging along with that while Guitar Hero floods the disc-based market.

Re: General Music Game Discussion Thread (Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Rock Revolution, et

With yesterday's retail Country Track Pack, Harmonix also has finally figured out how to make retail expansions relevant to DLC whores like we are. Half of that is exclusive. The upcoming Metal pack already has otherwise-unannounced tracks as well.

So now they have the option to sell us a few songs twice, depending how big of a fan we are of the pack's theme.

All while keeping the "platform" intact.
