The WD 320GB drive is only $93 shipped at Amazon right now. I picked one up.

I finally had a successful upgrade of my PS3 drive. I did strip one screw, but they are sending me out a replacement cage. I was able to remove the screw with needle nose pliers regardless....so it was easy enough.
I used the 320GB WD external drive I bought at Best Buy with Gift Cards (no real cost to me). I put the 60GB drive in the external case, so now I have a nice portable drive to use to transfer stuff back and forth.
I love it now....lots of space for anything. I even dumped like 20GB of video on my PS3 just to have local.

No, it doesn't (at least mine didn't).

Before I even get around to updating my drive, I need that device that was released when the PS3 first came out that allowed you to port over data from your PS1/PS2 memory cards to your PS3. I can't find it anywhere. Was it discontinued?

PS3 is dropping backwards compatibility now, and I've heard nothing but bad about the new software emulation stuff. Apparently even mainstream titles like Ratchet & Clank don't run well.

I have an old 60GB PS3 and it plays my PS2 games just fine. But I have a bunch of PS2 games I'm well into but have yet to finish and I'd rather not start from scratch given how far into them I currently am. That's why I want that memory card transfer thingy.

Okay, I have all the hardware and am going to give this a shot tonight. I'll take a look at that CNet video if it's still around.
My understanding from reading this thread is all that is required is:
1. Backup the existing drive (using the backup utility in the PS3) to another drive
2. Remove existing drive
3. Insert new drive
4. Format drive (using the PS3 format utility)
5. Restore data from step 1
Is there anything between steps 3 and 4? Are the format and restore utils part of the hard PS3 memory that will already be there?
Thanks!
Edit: Nevermind. After checking out that CNet video, it does look like it is that easy, no OS install.
Edit2: All done, very easy. Took about an hour total.

Hey guys, sorry for bumping this old dog, but I had a question for those who upgraded their drives.
Did any of you buy a hard drive enclosure for your old PS3 drive?
I did, and am having problems reformatting it to recognize it on my computer or anything else I hook it up to.
Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

I did - make sure the enclosure is for a SATA drive. I use mine for on the fly backups and such. What enclosure did you buy? I bought a cheap Airlink one and it works fine.

If your computer can't recognize it, you can use EASEUS - it's a freeware alternative to Partition Magic, and worked just fine when reformatting my drive - http://www.partition-tool.com/
Make sure you download the Home edition. However, it only works on Windows 32-bit systems.

Yeah, I did. Make sure that when you reformat the drive, it is in FAT32 and not NTFS, otherwise the PS3 will not be able to read it.

It's really weird, everything hooks up just fine and a green light even comes on when I plug it in, but it won't show up anywhere on the computer. That's why I figured I had to reformat it or something, but I didn't know which software to use for that.

Well I tried just about everything last night and couldn't get anything to work. So I'm guessing it's the hard drive enclosure. Looks like I have to send it back to Amazon.
Does anyone else have any recommendations on programs or other enclosures that might work?

It only takes two screws to install the hard drive.
