Question about counterstrike

What game (half life?) do I need to buy in order to play counterstrike? Do I only need to purchase the game, or do I also need to buy an account?

The original? Or Source? I believe there are standalone versions of each for sale. Easiest thing would probably to go and download Steam and just purchase and download Counter-Strike digitally.

Where do I download it from? Is it a one time payment or is it a subscription?

Either way he's going to need to use Steam, and either way he's going to need to have a user name and password associated with it. If you don't mind it, OP, digital distribution through Steam is the best way to go, IMHO.

Steam is just awesome.

Counterstrike: Source is $19.99
Plain old Counterstrike is $9.99

I definitely say pick up Source, it's much more widely played and it still looks amazing for its age, and it's still constantly updated.
