PS2 game slowdown on PS3

I was playing ratchet and clank on the ps3 and noticed some major slowdown in the gameplay. I tested the game out on the ps2 and it ran normal on that system. Kingdom hearts 2 seemed to work fine on the ps3 so i don't think its an issue with the system. Is there any way to fix this? thanks in advance.

If you live in the US, do you have the 60G or 20G model? If not, then you're are using a partially backwards compatible PS3. This model uses part hardware and part software to emulate PS2 games. Therefore about 10% of PS2 games don't work and many have minor glitches.

So to rectify it you could try trading your PS3 for one of the early hardware BC models, although I think they are a little expensive, even second hand.

What type of PS3 is it. 40, 60 or 80GB? The one least likely to give you issues is the 60GB model but even that has it's quirks (mine refuses to output any audio via HDMI whe the DD5.1 tracks kick in for a handful of cinematics in MGS2 and it outputs 2 channel PCM audio on games and CDs as 7.1 thus eliminating the ability to apply PLII via my receiver).

Okay, the 80GB is BC via emulation. That's probably the reason behind the slowdown. You're better off playing it on your PS2. Unless Sony fixes the emulation via firware update, sticking to your PS2 for PS2 games is your best bet.

Sony is making the emulation software a priority so there are supposed to be improvements coming...

Cool. Hopefully they'll iron out the audio issues as well. It's annoying to have to edit my audio options to 2 channel just so I can apply PLII to games that would benefit from it.

All of the Ratchet and clank games run slow on the PS3s using software emulation. Dont know why, just one of the titles that wont run correctly. I had to dig out my old PS2 to play them.

Really? All the reports I've seen recently on Kotaku and Joystiq with regards to the forthcoming 80GB with the price drop say they are dropping it all together.

I heard that Sony will not be support BC anymore. Can't find a link but I'm sure it's in the PS3 thread or the E3 thread.

This is the opposite of what I've heard.

The only chance is that:

1. They are desperate to sell PS2 titles on the PSN store so they will put serious development effort in building a pure software solution that runs on all PS3s.
2. They don't lock the software down so that you can't play your own disc copies.

I also heard that there was a slight delay in controller inputs as well, most notable in fighters, regardless of what kind of PS3 you have. Can anyone verify?

I haven't noticed anything while playing Tekken 5 on my 80gb system. The only glitch I've noticed is some audio problems during the cutscenes in God of War.

I have the 80GB Motorstorm combo and have the same problems with Ratchet and Clank. Most notable is that the "talking" animation is WAY behind the actual audio. Also when a huge amount of nuts are flying around, there is a slow down. It is admittedly annoying and disappointing, but doesn't affect my overall enjoyment of the game.

I believe there is a thread on this over at Shoryuken, but I can't get to it at work to link, so sorry.

It depends...from what I've read, Tekken runs fine, but the issue ends up being with most 2D fighters being 2-3 Frames behind in control inputs. Apparently this is also more noticeable when using an Arcade stick, and even more so with the PS2 arcade sticks using the controller converter. The slowdown also apparently applies to PS1 fighters on the PS3 as well. The problem is with the translation of the inputs into the emulation...and who knows if Sony cares to fix it.

I don't have a PS3 yet, but I think I'll be keeping my PS2 when I pick one up...especially because I have a collection of 2D fighters that I love and love playing with an Arcade Stick. Man, I can't wait for the SamSho collection in a few months...
