The DC Universe Online looks fucking great. Still, I'm not clear on what the concept is.
|
I was happy with Sony, but MS had the conference of the show. Nintendo's was a disaster, but I guess their target audience wouldn't be watching E3 or even know what it is. Maybe the worst E3 press conference I have ever sat through.
Sony gave me a lot to look forward to and plenty of reason not to buy a 360 so I'm good there. Though part of me is very tempted to sell the Wii while the value is high and buy a 360 and go with the PS360 for my combo. The PSWii is turning into a disaster. |

I have to admit I was impressed with the MAG footage. It looks like fun. Would have been nice to have more than 30 seconds of GoW3. DC Universe I guess is like City of Heroes, but I don't know. Jim Lee's still my favorite comic book artist so it was nice seeing him, even if I couldn't give a crap about DC characters. Ratchet & Clank looks pretty cool, and definitely has a nice price. Hopefully it's got more than 4 hours of content though.
Sony's Video thing seemed pretty cool, but I guess that's similar to what MS already has on the 360. I don't have one, so I don't know. Some of that Gran Turismo TV content looked cool too, but I can't see myself paying for it. Was this the first mention of the new Greatest Hits collection? I was hoping Uncharted would be in the initial offering, but I guess I'll have to wait for that one. |
inFAMOUS didn't interest you at all.
|
Nintendo's one saving grace (Outside of the soccer mom/girlfriend group), was the 1:1 technology.
Now to get some flipping games. |

What's this 1:1 technology?

Sony had the best conference from my perspective, thanks to additional info or announcements for Resistance 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: QFB, DC Universe Online, Infamous and MAG.
Nintendo's "Motion Plus" might be appealing, but I'm going to be pretty annoyed if they cost more than a couple bucks. On top of what came in my Wii box, I've bought 3 Wii Remotes, 2 Nunchuks, 2 classic controllers, 2 Zappers, the balance board and 3 steering wheels (on top of the one that came in the box with Mario Kart). That's what, like $350 in peripherals? Unless they can start churning them out cheap (or even better, free), Nintendo needs to stop adding accessories and focus on coming up with some kick ass games that use what's already out. Other than slight interest in "Motion Plus", the rest of Nintendo's conference had no interest for me. As for Microsoft, Portal: Still Alive is great news. Footage of Fallout 3 and Fable 2 looked good, but they'll likely be games that take up too much time for me to get into. It's good to have a final date on Gears 2. A Scene It follow-up is nice, but I hope it's either budget-priced or DLC. I won't be paying significant money for new questions to the same game. The new dashboard and avatar crap look horrible. My interest in the Netflix partnership will depend entirely on how it's implemented. All in all, I was pretty underwhelmed by the info coming out of all of the conferences. A week ago, my 10 most anticipated 2008 games were Gears of War 2, Ghostbusters, Resistance 2, Left 4 Dead, Lego Batman, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Infamous, Lord of the Rings: The Conquest and Brutal Legend. Nothing I've seen from E3 has altered that list. |

http://blogs.pcworld.com/gameon/archives/007265.html Plug a little accessory the size of a memory card into the tail of your Wii remote and Nintendo says you can have dramatically better motion control. According to Nintendo's pre-E3 press splash, the Wii MotionPlus attaches to the end of your Wii Remote and, in conjunction with the accelerometer and sensor bar, lets the system keep better track of your arm's position. How much better? Nintendo claims an astonishing 1:1, arm to screen. That's like a dozen points higher fidelity than the current system, which works great for casual stuff like rhythm and puzzle games where you can sort of slop through the activities, but it's always been kinda touch-and-go with more serious stuff like Zelda and Metroid. You should hear what comes out of my mouth when my system's infrared bar loses the pointer in a game or just plain locks up. It happens fairly often, too. |
I found it interesting this Motion Plus thing got into the show and isn't coming until Spring 09 and yet they skipped over actual games coming this fall.

What is this In the Movies thing people are railing about? I saw what looked like a tiny bit of footage and it seemed like it was just a vision cam minigame (like the Eyetoy). I haven't see any real info on the thing yet - anyone have more info for me?

So sad that Nintendo did this. I was expecting some kind of surprise like a new Zelda game or a Wii Punch Out or even some confirmation of the Kid Icarus game and we only got Animal Crossing and Rock Band for dummies, also known as Wii Music. Don't they understand that we need a damn hard drive so we can purchase more classic games from thr Wii store?

I'll be adding trailers to VGT all day tomorrow. Trying out a new video host. Test it out for me. Here's one for Ubisoft's I Am Alive:

I think I bitched about this in another thread, but let me second the whole "Why no Nintendo Hard Drive?" If they don't want to mess with a big online network like Live; fine, I get that. They don't want to appeal to hard, hardcore gamers? Fine, I get that too. They seem to be doing fine without them. But when they're pushing Virtual Console console games every week, AND they've just introduced the WiiWare games...I mean, do they really not get that we're going to need more space? Like I said, if they don't want to mess with other things, that's fine. But this is basically me (and other Wii fans) saying "Hey, Nintendo, I'd like to give you more money for an overpriced peripheal," and Nintendo saying "No, I'm not really interested in money. Hey, watch one of our top execs pretend the Wii remote is a flute!"
I'm a Nintendo fan, and the Wii has given me and my family countless hours of fun. But how can they just ignore what would essentially be free money for them? |

You thought Nintendo's conference was a trainwreck, then you obviously didn't catch Activision's yet: <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="gtembed" width="480" height="392"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=22401"/> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <embed src="http://www.gametrailers.com/remote_wrap.php?mid=22401" swLiveConnect="true" name="gtembed" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" allowFullScreen="true" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="480" height="392"></embed> </object> |

Their presentation seemed much better than Nintendo but definitely lacked the 1-2-3 punch of Microsoft's Dash Redesign, Netflix and FFXIII. Bring on the third parties! Microsoft had the best one this year. |
I was also unclear about the DC game. While I'm a big DC fanboy, I couldn't care less about running a generic hero around Gotham City, fighting generic villains and teaming up with other generic heroes.
Why can't they just copy Marvel Ultimate Alliance, stuff it with 50-100 characters, and call it a day? I'd buy that in a heartbeat. And while I'm bitching, why can't DC get their damn comic book movies figured out? They're owned by a movie company; you'd think they'd have summer and winter blockbusters lined up from now until forever. I realize I've derailed a bit, and for that I apologize. |
I may be in the minority, but the avatars could be kind of cool...a little more personal than a small square gamerpic. It's obviously nothing new, but it should be fun to mess around with. Now the overall dashboard has me a bit worried. It looks very plain and just full of boxes. It looks like something someone would have made 4 years ago a hacked original xbox :)
And that Jamie Kennedy thing...wow |
