How in the world did you pull that off? Is the gunmetal color worth the price?

Note that I meant the old adapter will work with any system (but requires a plug), the new 360 adapter works only with the 360 (and is powered by the 360 via USB). Sorry for any confusion.

Anyone play the NCAA Football '09 demo?

I played the 360 version and loved it. Downloading the Ps3 one also, but I will get it for the 360 more than likely since I like the controller better.

On a side note, the PS3 NEEDS background downloading (either while playing a game or watching a Blu-Ray/DVD). A low-power option ,ala the 360, would be nice also.

Have you replaced your hard drive yet? After doing without for a year and a half, I just did so recently. 20GB just wasn't cutting it with the game installations that take up 2-3GB or more. At least it didn't cost that much, as I found a 160GB drive for $62.

And how hard was that to do? It's not like a TiVo in which you have to install software, right? I would guess the hardest part is cracking the PS3 open?

SATA drive?

You actually don't have to open the system. There's a door that opens revealing the HDD.

My question is whether or not there's an easy way to transfer the info from your old HDD to the new.

Well, I didn't bother with the backup utility, because all I needed to keep was a few game saves. Your system settings, including PSN login, apparently aren't stored on the hard drive and will remain. I didn't see any need to back up the game installations, since they could be re-installed the next time I put the discs in. I just had a few media files that were on my computer anyway. So, I just copied the game saves over to a USB flash drive and let the rest go.

I'm not sure how downloaded games and other paid content works, but the backup utility may allow you to transfer those. If not, they should be able to be downloaded again. I don't think it counts as another download either (you get 5), since it's to the same system.

Oh, and be careful not to strip the screws in the drive tray. I stripped one of them, and now the new drive is supported by 3 screws instead of 4 (since I had to leave the stripped screw in the old drive and cut out the metal loop to which the screw was attached). :)

So I finally got around to upgrading my video cables from the standard cables that came included with the PS3 to HDMI. I have the HDMI cable, but I can't find the correct HDMI->DVI adapter. The only correct adapter I can find is this but it is missing 2 sets of pins that my TV's DVI connection looks like. The correct cables (like this ) all have female DVI ends, whereas I need a male. Any suggestions?

P.S. I'm a dumbass and was apparently really tired when I ordered this thinking it was what I needed. Not only does it not work (it has some short pins around the "long pin" thing that mine doesn't have corresponding holes for) the other end is completely wrong. So if anyone needs one, PM :P.

I am wondering if two of my favorite games will have sequels coming out in the near future. Does anyone know if we will see a sequel to Black, or another Twisted Metal game coming to the PS3?

dizzlle01 06-20-08 05:48 PM

Woot finally upgraded my hard drive on the ps3. It was really easy to swap it out. It is now a 160gb ps3.

Decker 06-20-08 06:22 PM

How much was that 160 GB HD?

fujishig 06-20-08 06:23 PM

What's the biggest the PS3 will currently allow? There's a 750 gig for about 100 at Fry's...

at the moment a 2.5 SATA laptop drive goes upto 320GB.

I upgraded my 60GB to 160GB last year and LOVE IT! still have 109GB left.

oh, right, it's a laptop drive, I forgot... :)

320 for 124.99, then... is that confirmed to work?

although I'm not anywhere near filling up the 80, I also don't have many games for the PS3 yet.

any 2.5 SATA will work. Also make sure its 5400rpm and not 7200rpm.The PS3 will run very hot if its 7200.

Brent L 06-20-08 09:04 PM

Here is a 320GB for $109.99. I'm very, very tempted, but I just don't know what I'd use all of that space for.

dizzlle01 06-21-08 01:18 AM

You can only get up to 250gb. And make sure its a SATA drive and 5400rpm.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2007/...drive-upgrade/
says top out at 250gb

ultimaton 06-21-08 02:09 AM

I don't think that is true anymore, I have a 320gb hdd in my PS3 and it works just fine.

Ravenous 06-22-08 04:08 PM

So are they going to release that PS3 with metal gear solid special?

Don't know what you mean, but i doubt there will be another MGS bundle, because we already have three different ones.

1. 40gb PS3 with MGS4 regular game
2. 80gb PS3 with MGS4 regular game
3. 40gb PS3 Gunmetal with MGS4 Limited Edition game

#3 is exclusive through Konami.com

The other way to get the MGS4 LE game is through Gamestop, but GS online already sold out...

Just upgraded my gunmetal PS3 from 40gb to 320gb. Correction though, the 320gb is only showing up as 298gb... Even after i used the ALLOCATE ALL SPACES FOR PS3 option. Apparently 20gb went missing...

Upgrade is very easy, just unscrew and replace the hdd (youtube videos for the newbies) and use a USB card reader thing for PS3/UPDATE/xxx where xxx is the firmware file. If you have the previous hdd backed up, all files can be ported over. The only thing you have to do for the PSN games is to activate your account again if it's a new PS3 (the games need to be tied to your "new" PS3 console). This is why you're allowed up to download your games six times :) Oh, i paid $125 for the 320gb hdd, but getting the 35% back (already posted to my Live account), so i paid $80 for it, awesome deal :)

What option are you talking about? I put the new drive in, and it just asked me to format it when booting up the PS3. I don't remember seeing anything about allocating space.

As for the space used, remember that the actual space is 320 billion bytes, which is different from how computers (and the PS3) report the space, so 298GB sounds about right. In addition, the PS3 reserves about 12% for its own use.

DJ_Longfellow 06-23-08 06:34 AM

When you migrate the data from one HDDto another, does it take all the user profiles? I have two profiles and 1 is a GAMESHARE account, just curious if I would have to log into that again to download games that are shared.

I have a 60GB and it's about half full after all the game installs and downloads. Not sure if I really NEED a bigger HDD, but it is pretty cheap to upgrade these days.

Noonan 06-23-08 07:22 AM

Ocelot - Where did you pick up your hdd for that price? That's a good deal.
