That's the thing. It's the perfect opportunity to cut off preorders and do their favorite spiel: hey, you know what, preorders are sold out right now because of demand, but you can preorder these other things early. Instead it just ticks off another customer.
I'm not sure why they stopped doing that, or if they didn't and this location just F'd it up. Anyway, I noticed that my local store doesn't have it still, but the location across town now has it back in. I think I'm going to call them during my lunch break and give them some crap over this. I'll see if they can get a copy from the other store for me. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
If they were good GS employees (yes, they exist), right after telling you they didn't get enough in, they would've called every other GS in the vicinity to see if you can get it from them, and/or have it brought over to the store for you soon.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Yeah, he should've done that.
In the mean time, I did check the GS app on my phone while standing there, and none of the locations within a 100 miles of me had it in stock. I thought it was sort of an interesting gesture that he told me I could take home a copy of the vanilla version of the game (free of charge), just so I could play it and then give it back to them when I got the copy I pre-ordered. I declined for a couple reasons 1) What if the two dudes there that day aren't there when I go back? The other people working there might not have any idea about this and it might just cause a whole bunch of confusion. 2) I didn't want to take it home, play it, bring it back, and have them slap a sticker on the case and sell it to someone as a "Brand New Copy". I'm not a fan of that GS policy. 3) While I tend to be more trustful in people than this, part of me also wondered if they would then say "but you got your game!" if they don't restock and I go back in there to complain. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
You're a better man than me. It's just a video game and none of us absolutely need a video game on release day, but I would have raised a huge stink on principle alone. If they're going to guarantee you a copy on release day, they better fucking live up to that guarantee. I'm getting all riled up just thinking about it.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Oh, I was pretty mad when it happened. I just internalized the whole thing and didn't snap at the dudes there. I've worked retail in the past and had people just blow up at me for things...It wasn't pleasant and I don't like putting people through that.
..but as soon as I left the store I just let loose on twitter about it. I kept tagging GameStop in my tirade, and they finally responded on Wednesday. I thought they'd do the whole "We're so sorry, we're going to contact you and see how to fix this" thing most companies will do on twitter when someone has a problem...Nope. They did give a link to a customer service survey though, with the note that I could request that the manager of *that location* call me. I actually think one of the guys at the store that day was the manager, so what would that do? I am still a little pissed about it though. It's a $100 game and I had $51 down on it and I placed my order over 2 months ago (right after this version was announced). I bet people who pre-ordered it 2 weeks before release and only put $5 down on it got a copy because they got to the store before I did. The weirdest thing out of all of this is I didn't even get one of the courtesy calls from Gamestop to say the game was in like I usually do for pre-orders. |

That's because they were hoping you wouldn't show up after your copy and some others were <strike>sold off to people</strike> bought by employees that are going to put them on Ebay here shortly and ask outrageous prices for them.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Well shit.
Right before my lunch break, I checked the app again and the other store went out of stock now too. Great. |

Gamestop fucked up and it doesn't seem that your situation is an unusual one. They should be handing out gift cards to everyone that showed up to pick up the game but couldn't get it. The fact that Gamestop already has your money and are still letting you leave empty handed after guaranteeing something is horrible. Not atypical for Gamestop either, which is why they'll be in Radio Shack territory in a few years and a lot of good people will lose their jobs because of it. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Yeah my immediate thought was they were out of CEs because an employee wanted to buy one.
|
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Does Gamestop still have that bullshit practice of opening every single game they receive in stock and still having the nerve to sell them as new? I remember years ago I questioned them about that policy and the excuse the employee gave me was "to prevent theft."

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Well, I just called my store for the hell of it. The woman who answered checked if they had it and said "Oh, we did get some in today. Unfortunately, they are all being held for pre-orders."
I was like "That's not unfortunate at all, I'm one of those people!" lol I said that if they knew they didn't have enough Tuesday and turned people away, why didn't they call the people who had open orders today to let them know the game was in now? She was like "Well, we're holding these until Saturday. On Saturday we're calling all open pre-orders to tell them we will sell the games to the public if they don't pick them up. Then we will start selling them to people without pre-orders on Sunday." Whatever. I'm going in to get it now. Unless some weird shit goes on (Like she looked up the wrong edition and they actually still don't have it), consider this resolved. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
What is so special about the GameStop version that makes it $100? It doesn't look like it has a statue or a steelbook or anything like that.
|
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
So they get the game in, but wait until Saturday to call people and then give them less than 24 hours to pick them up?
|
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
On the subject of pre-orders, did anyone get their pre-order bonus condoms when they bought inFamous: Second Son?

I just went for it because I knew I could get it free* by trading in some old games I didn't want. It was sorta win-win, because I didn't have to pay for the season pass either and I got to clear some space in my place so it didn't end up like Alan Smithee's. -ptth- That said, when I picked it up, the girl there tried to upsell me a download card of the season pass. I was like "...It's included in the box on this version. That's one of it's selling points..." and she just gave me a weird look. lol. Anyway, I have the game now, time to play. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
This definitely sounds like a bad location. Sadly, these sorts of things are all but demanded by the corporate office. I specifically ran my stores with integrity, but I would frequently get lambasted by the district and regional managers for not hitting specific pre-order and attachment numbers. Turnover is very high at Gamestop because all they care about is hitting numbers, so the managers who get their numbers get shuffled from store to store, and the ones who don't usually get fired quickly. The problem is, the ones who hit their numbers really can only do so by cheating and fudging things, which leads to situations like this (or worse). The managers are so afraid of having a bad month that they'll do almost anything to keep the numbers in the right place. It's really pathetic.

That is a straight Dick move and reason to not do business again with that particular location. Why they think this an ok practice is beyond comprehension.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
While we may (rightfully) complain about GameStop's bullshit, it's nothing compared to what they have to deal with from idiot customers. Some of these stories are insane and make me glad I've never had to work retail.

Don't you think that each one might feed the other's fury? Yes, all retail puts up with terrible customers of all types but when you have silly procedures and push product down the throat of people then you will get the ire of some customers that don't normally act out. Now, some of those people just don't know how to act.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Almost all retail deals with some sort of idiotic customers. Obviously, Gamestop gets its fair of them. However, I would say that the loco ones had most likely been on a previous crazy ride.
|
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Exactly. I hardly think Gamestop is the first store to deal with stupid customers. Kinda makes it even funnier that they think they're special. Hell, most of the stories in that link aren't even that bad.
Love the story of the cowboy trying to haggle over a used game. I kindly explain that haggling is not appropriate in retail. Bwahahaha... it's a used game, it has no set value and you work for a glorified pawn shop. Haggling actually seems pretty appropriate, IMO.
