I "would" do more with GS if their overall pricing policy...new, used and trade-ins...would be better. For the value you get with trade-ins, they are the worst. Their "pre-owned" games are price above the 100% level. If any bright spot or positive is they sometime get a good pre-order bonus for a game.

But here's a good example of their pricing.

Two months ago I picked up Batman: AS...GOTY 3D off Amazon new for $28 with FS. The trade-in amount wasn't even $7.00 with GS and BB it was $9.00. With Amazon I got $12.50. Now on top of that a "pre-owned" copy of Batman:AS GOTY 3D at Gamestop is...$27.00 while a "new" one from Amazon is $28.00

But, if I keep going back and forth I'm really going to sound like more of a negative nancy than I really want to. In the end, I really just wanted to say that although many of their business practices aren't great, there are many good advantages like the one you pointed out as long as people are looking for it. As I said... I traded in my Xbox 360 and my Wii, and the games for my Wii (not the 360), and pre-ordered the Gears of War 3 Xbox 360 Console... and I really have almost nothing left to pay on it... all BECAUSE of their promotions, so I definitely see the good in them.

I just wanted to say that Gamestop isn't 'evil' or 'vile'. Consumers really need to just learn a lesson, especially when it comes to the online portion since it seems everyone here is VERY well versed in their business practices, and just NOT give them their business if they're not happy with them.

I don't think they are any more evil than any other corporation. The people who complain about their trade in values should go to a pawn shop and see what they will give you. The way I see it is that parents who just trade stuff in w/o regard to the promos are paying a price for convince. They are able to drive down to the store at their convenience, hand over some games they don't want and get back a game or two they do want. Most people know how the internet works. They have the ability to maximize their values. Some people just value time more than the difference they could make with more effort.

My only complaint w/ their trade in values is that they are unknown and can change within the same day. I love that you can easily find and lock in a value at Amazon or Best Buy.

A friend of mine is always playing the newest games and hitting midnight releases. I asked him how he does it and he says he knows a manager at Gamestop that gives him full price for trade ins.

Is this legal? Or is he full of shit?

If by full price he means the retail value of the games, then something untoward is going on. If by full price he means a good value, than that may be. The thing is that everything regarding trade ins is pretty automated at gamestop. Unless employees get a better trade in value and the manager is giving him that, I don't see what the manager could do to give him an awesome value (unless he is processing the trade as a defective return or something).

Look who made Consumer Reports naughty list:

• GameStop. A Fortune 500 company with more than 6,500 stores worldwide, this video game software and hardware merchant has a laundry list of conditions governing returns and exchanges. And in the end, GameStop proclaims, “We reserve the right to refuse any return.”

He said full price. As in he plays Saints Row for a few days, finishes it, and gets his money back.

You can guarantee those games are being resold to unsuspecting customers as "new", since somehow they've gotten people to accept buying opened games as the norm.

They need to bring back that NBC "It's new... to you" campaign.

That's what I was thinking, too. Like the manager is letting him check them out, and then re-selling them.

BS. I should say something.

More than likely if this story is true then he is buying new and then the manager is accepting a return for the game as used which means he only loses 5 bucks per game.

Gamestop has a 7-day refund policy on used games, right? Maybe he's just buying a "used" game as soon as it's available and returning it in that timeframe.

Not sure, but he says he has "connections."

There's no way he does that. When a new game comes out, he's at home playing it at 12:30am.

In the past month and a half, he's gotten Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7, Assassins Creed Revelations, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Halo Anniversary, Skyrim, Sonic Generations, and WWE 12.

Expose him, get him fired. Burn down the store and bankrupt the company if you can as well.

But you don't know how the manager friend is ringing it up, right?

Usually when someone says they "Have connections", they really don't have any worthwhile connections.

How does he even have time to play all those games within a week?

from what I gather from GS employees that post here: they get games a week or more early, play them through on easy difficulty in 3 hours with no side-quests, return to GS opened, complain here about the short campaign, and then sell as new to shmucks like us.

Went in yesterday to pay off the rest of xenoblade pre-order. Get to the cashier, paid it off and was never asked if I wanted to pre-order anything or subscribe to their magazine! I must've walked into bizarro world gs

As much as I don't like GS, I really don't blame them. Used games is a driving force in the game market. If you remove that option, sales will drop across the board. I occasionally only buy a game because I know I'll be able to get some of my money back when I sell it used.

I think that if both next gen systems from Sony and Microsoft go this route there might not be a Gamestop shortly after. I don't think they can survive without the used game market with Amazon and other retailers offering such strong sale prices on new games.
