IV is a really good starter due to the chapter structure.

If you say you're not a huge fan of turn-based combat, you should skip the DQ games, as they're are nothing but turn-based combat with some story peppered throughout.

Instead, I'd heartily recommend Chrono Trigger - probably one of the best RPGs ever made - it's battle system is a bit of a hybrid of action & turn-based and works well, but it's so very much more than just that, in terms of it's story, scope, depth, characters and gameplay - you'll be hard pressed to find anything better.

Chrono Trigger is nothing but turn based too.

There's not a hint of action to it.

Re: Official Nintendo DS Thread VIII: 65 Million Strong.. and Growing

I'm a turn-based RPG fan and I've skipped DQIV and DQV and decided to wait for IX instead due to the way IV and V treat both screens as if they were one instead of using one for the map.

The remake of Final Fantasy IV is my favorite DS game so far, wasn't dissapointed one bit like I was with the FFIII remake. I want to get Chrono Trigger badly but won't until I finish FFIV, GTA, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia on hard mode which has taken me months and still haven't been able to beat it. The World Ends With You doesn't look interesting at all to me.

Unlike the 360 game, this one is a Tactical RPG.

Yeah, but it feels less turn-based than DQ. Encounters aren't random, there's not as big a reliance on a menu system in the fighting, as there's not a "battle screen" per se and also how you can choose to fight battles in "active-time" all contribute to it being far less monotonous than the typical turn-based battles.

Re: Official Nintendo DS Thread VIII: 65 Million Strong.. and Growing

Hello all.

I have the exact same issue regarding the wireless internet. I downloaded the web browser and successfully connected to my home router which is encrypted with a WEP password I setup. I was able to access it and browse most things, facebook was an issue due to the low basic memory.

I then went traveling. I went to a pub with free wi-fi and could not connect to it because of this error 052201 -1, yet my laptop connected fine. The exact same thing happened with the wi-fi on two different trains too.

I'm not very techy so don't really know what the problem is but it seems it won't connect to wireless, unsecured networks.

Any ideas/thoughts?

Re: Official Nintendo DS Thread VIII: 65 Million Strong.. and Growing

So I picked this up from GameStop for $14.99 new earlier today:

It's a great "pick up and play" game, I highly recommend it. I hear it's not long, and not overly difficult, but it's a perfect game to pick up cheap and have fun with for a few minutes without driving yourself too crazy.

I was tempted to get this, but just didn't know much about what the heck kind of game it was. Sounds perfect for a DS game though.

Anyone ever played n+?

I found it for about $10... would it be worth it?

My son loves this game, but I found it very hard and frustrating. You are this tiny little ninja and you have to jump around the levels to collect things and reach the exit. You also have to avoid things in the environment and falling from too far. It is sort of an action puzzle game with minimalist graphics.

It reviewed well, but the difficulty is pretty high from my experience. My kid is just much better than me at this stuff now.

N+ is pretty sweet.

I've played the DS version but don't own it as I already had the Xbox version.

I picked up Dragon Quest IV based on the recommendations here. As someone who loved Final Fantasy II and III on the SNES but fell out of love with JRPGs after FF7, I have to say I'm having more fun with DQIV than I expected to. I like how splitting the story into chapters allows you to switch to new characters before you get bored of the ones you're currently playing with. I don't love the grinding, but it hasn't been too bad so far. Though I am in the middle of a decently long grind right now. I'm trying to get through the

in Chapter 2 and I keep getting my ass kicked.

I also love N+ and have played through both the PSP and XBLA versions, which have completely different levels that work best for each platform - the lower resolution of the DS version makes it a less ideal version of the game - if you have a PSP, get that one instead.

Picked up Metal Slug 7 today for $15 at Gamestop. Really like it, but I have always liked the Metal Slug games. Ignition is really trying hard to be like Atlus. They included a nice slipcover and a mini CD-Rom with game trailers and 6 Metal Slug Wallpapers. Fairly nice mini poster as well.

It's way too easy to get addicted to buying DS games since so many great games can be found for cheap, not to mention that half the new games are half the price of a 360 or PS3 or Wii game.

This is cool:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6i6w21HFbq0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6i6w21HFbq0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I took a picture with my DSi of the above grid so I can have that on here whenever I want to play around with this thing (or save it to an SD card, I'm just at work and can't do the latter). It goes without saying that this is a great "easter egg", so to speak.

Sold my 3-year-old DS Lite (perfect condition), $10 broken case, and $60 worth of games for $200 (the games are worth more than $60 but through various sales I them for $60), meaning I got $130 for the DSL. The $200 covers the DSi and the charger case that is being released on 6/1, so I upgraded for $0 out of pocket

No, you downgraded, since you can no longer play GBA games. (unless you already have a GBA - but I'm assuming with your "upgrade" mentality, you traded it for your first DS).

I got rid of my DS Phat (which hasn't been used in years) and some old games and upgraded to the DSi for $20 out of pocket. I like it a lot, and I still have a DS Lite and a GBA SP for playing my GBA games.

There are so many great DS and iPod Touch games that I don't have time enough as it is to play all the games I want.

Thankfully I still have a GBA SP as well. I guess I kept it for my daughter to mess around with. Now I'm glad I have it for my older Super Mario games.

I need to buy a regular DS for my daughter for her next birthday. I wonder if I should buy a used one or just purchase a new one. The difference in cost is so little that I'm not sure. Knowing her, she'll start complaining she doesn't have a DSi like me.

the battles though are so simple and slow and not very fun. I love my rpgs and never played Chrono Trigger before but i feel like its somewhat boring. It started off great but the battles are very boring.
