Not catering to the core game? I think the releases of Zelda TP, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the announcements of Punch-Out, Sin & Punishment 2, sequels to Galaxy and Zelda, plus the not yet announced Kid Icarus, pretty much prove you wrong.

I think you actually proved him right.

Well those were the major ones. Nintendo also released Super Paper Mario, ExciteTruck, Fire Emblem and Battalion Wars. Plus the core fans have always wanted a new console Nintendo 2D game and Nintendo released Wario Land: Shake. But my point was not that Nintendo is releasing a crap load of core games, my point was that Nintendo has released a balance of core/casual games.

You're not making a very strong case. Outside of Wario, the most recent title you mention came out a year ago.

Man 2009 is looking fairly weak for the Wii

As opposed to...?
I went to Target yesterday and just stared at the Wii games thinking about the B2G1 deal. Nothing even struck me. Closest I got was Mario Kart + de Blob + Wario: Shake It - but even those for $90 (we had a 10% day of shopping) wasn't worth it to me.

They need to hurry up and make a good basketball game for the Wii. Just give me a crappy looking copy of NBA 2K9!!! I'm tempted to get a PS3 or Xbox 360 just for that game. I'm still playing NBA2k7 on the xbox...

Ok so seriously now, knowing what you know about the Wii, and its capabilities to this point, exactly what kind of games do you want in order to make it worth firing up more than you do now?
What type of gaming experience would keep you playing it more often?
Or has the HD generation of games now completely surpassed any hope for the Wii as a core gaming console?

HD isn't what keeps me away from the Wii (as I'm also not playing on my PS3).
It's about fun and connectivity and achievements for me.
The games I'm currently playing could be played on the Wii (Rock Band, GH), but the connectivity/community isn't there. The extensibility isn't there via DLC. The fun is more on the 360 for my needs on those games.
I tried to stick by the Wii through the big titles. Mario Party 8, Mario Strikers, SSBB really didn't do anything for me knowing how they could have been done with a proper online community. I skipped Mario Kart for the same reason and have no plans of buying another Wii title unless it's Metroid, Zelda, or Kid Icarus - where I know it's a single player experience anyway.
Dragon Quest: Swords didn't do it for me (even though it's easily my favorite series of all time) and I had been waiting for that since before launch.
Wii2 needs fun games, but it needs fun games that I can extend and play online easily. I want an XBL-clone for WiiConnect. I want realtime stats, invites, voice chat, etc.
You bring Nintendo IPs in on that way to play and I'm good.
Also, Virtual Console 2 needs to support remote multiplayer. The emulator needs to connect to other Wiis in a host mode like PC emulators have been doing for years. Enforce everyone to have the game purchased, fine.

I agree completely.
The devs of games now are not seeing the big picture here it seems. If you make a stand alone game, you have to put so much development into it so that it stands on its own that its almost getting to be unprofitable.
Whereas you design a game with DLC in mind or an active online community the game will take on a life of its own and remain profitable long after initial sales. Essentially you can break up the game into several smaller releases instead of making one big release that takes years to make.
I would much rather have a Zelda/Metroid/Mario game with an online community that is continually updated with content than spending hours playing the thing once thru and never playing it again as a stand alone game. It has no replay value for me anymore after the once thru.

Those are all stand alone games though that don't require a community. For me all they need to do is provide some stand out single player games. There is no community and there never will be so why bother at this point? If I want community I turn on the 360. Give me Super Mario Galaxy 2, Kid Icarus, Pikmin 3, a new F-Zero or Waverace.

The problem is that this type of gaming is not evolving. Yes its fun but its not 2008 fun. Its 1990 fun.
How do you know what an online zelda or mario would be like if they are just keep on keepin' on with the same old same old?
These franchises need to adapt to gaming in the 20th century. Its nice to flash back to 20 years ago, and that is what the VC is for. But for new releases they really need to bring the online aspect in. Maybe not so much turn them all into a MMORPG-fest, but at least build in some DLC, and messaging, meet-ups, avatars, chats etc.
