Of course if you want a tuxedo for your avatar you'll have to cough up some points. It's webkinz for the hardcore gamer. ;)

With the themes dropped in, the dashboard's new look is kind of starting to grow on me. The avatars however, still look pretty lame IMO, and actually seem really out of place.

edstein 07-16-08 11:41 PM

These Avatars suck. Are they going to be optional?

Really? While -both- the Wii's and MS' Avatars are kinda lame and a bit cartoony, I do think the MS Avatars are better looking than Nintendo's.

Read over on CAG that ads are gone! They will only appear on the Spotlight page in this new dash layout. Awesome news.

That is good news, I can get with that :)

When I look at the new dashboard I see what looks to be a streamlined, "slick" new interface with a generic, goofy looking cartoon character slapped on it. While the Miis are pretty goofy too, they don't seem at odds with Nintendo's "style" or on the Wii's interface (where I really never have to see a Mii jumping around like it his brain damage if I don't want to.), like these avatars seem to be -- I do allow for the possibility that these will look better in person.

Agreed...that makes the dash look much nicer. I'd actually be more likely to buy a theme looking like that.

I'm sure there'll be a way to not see MS avatars or a way to keep them still. Miis fitting with Nintendo makes sense because let's be honest, the overall theme and vibe of Nintendo is Cartoony and Yeah! Fun!. That's not a bad thing or a bash, it's just what it is. I'm not worried about MS' Avatars.

Groucho 07-17-08 02:35 PM

They'll probably make all the "cutesy" avatar gear and looks free (pink sweater, bow ties), but if you want to have a more "mature" look (leather jacket, eye patch, stubble) they'll charge up the butt.

Giantrobo 07-18-08 05:30 AM

I tried the <b>"Too Human"</b> demo and I'm still confused. Did I play a game? What was going on? Wait, they're futuristic Vikings? Hang on I shoot with these buttons, but I swing my sword with the analog stick? huh? Am I facing forward? But wait, the enemy is behind me? Are the soldiers there to fight or look pretty?

A little bit about the install feature with the new Dashboard update.
http://www.gamespot.com/features/619...tories;title;1

One of the not-so-cosmetic changes in the fall update will be the ability to let you play your games directly from the hard disk. The new feature will let users install all of the game content directly onto the hard drive to improve game load times. Microsoft reports that it has seen a 30 percent improvement in load times in internal testing. As an interesting data point, Microsoft went out of its way to tell a group of reporters that the full Devil May Cry 4 hard disk installation took roughly 10 minutes on the Xbox 360. The installation took twice as long when we conducted our own installation tests on the PlayStation 3. Another side benefit of having games installed on the hard disk is reduced noise, since the optical disc no longer needs to spin up. However, you will still need to have the game disc in your optical drive while you're playing it, presumably as a piracy check.

I bet that the real driver for "copy disc to drive" gameplay capability is in preparation for multi-disc titles coming down the road.

mattysemo247 07-18-08 08:57 AM

Yep, like Forza 3

I was wondering if this would also help to cool things down on the 360? The CPU would still run hot but if the disc drive doesn't have to spin and access all the time, that's gotta be less heat generated right? Or am I looking at this wrong?

Also, I've never really thought about til' now but does the 360's HDD have a spinning platter like desk top PC HDD's?

I think it does run cooler when the disc drive isn't running...at least it seems that way when I'm playing a demo or arcade game.

Another "rumor" going around right now is: Multi-disc games will have the option of installing to the drive... but everything else will be forced.

Which makes no sense at all....

Especially when the Devil May Cry install was supposedly like 5GB!

The Dude 07-18-08 11:46 AM

Will they begin selling the 60 gig drive on it's own once they discontinue the 20 gig? I really don't feel like spending $175 on the 120 gig drive, but my little 20 gig is getting close to full (damn you GH3 and RB d/l) ; I'm hoping that the 60 is a little more affordable. Especially with the ability to throw games on the hard drive, I'm beginning to think I'm going to need the extra space.

Yeah, it makes no sense. The guys suckered into buying the Arcade bundle wouldn't be able to play any games at all, and that's not even including those 20Gigers with no space left.

Microsoft Xbox Division Sees $426m Profit In Fiscal 2008

Microsoft has announced its fourth quarter and full fiscal year results, showing recovery from the $1.1 billion loss in Xbox 360 warranty charges in 2007, as its Xbox division sees first-ever yearly profits - of $426 million, up from its nearly $2 billion total loss the year prior.

Xbox 360 hardware and software and PC game sales were the primary contributor to the Entertainment & Devices division's fourth quarter sales rising 37 percent year over year to $1.5 billion. Yearly sales rose 34 percent to $8.1 billion.

Fourth quarter losses were $188 million, down sharply from the $1.2 billion the year prior that resulted from the company extending the Xbox 360 warranty from one to three years, after 'red ring' errors persisted across numerous consoles.

The company says it shipped 1.3 million Xbox 360 consoles during the fourth quarter ending June 30th, 2008, up from 0.7 million the year prior. Yearly shipments were also up, with 8.7 million consoles sold in fiscal 2008 (the year to June 30th, 2008), compared to 6.6 million the year prior.

Overall, Microsoft took in sales of $15.8 billion in its fourth quarter, up 18 percent, and $4.3 billion in profit, with sales also up 18 percent for the full year to $60.4 billion - with $17.7 billion profit.

Said COO Kevin Turner, "Delivering $60 billion in annual revenue is an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to the powerful combination of great technology solutions and strong execution by our partners and global sales and marketing teams. The outlook for fiscal year 2009 is positive given the breadth of our impressive technology portfolio and the expanding collection of online services we are bringing to market."

That's pretty impressive, IMO, to sell 32% more consoles than the previous year.

It seems like you're almost being forced to buy one. 20 GB was never really enough (especially since it's really like 13 after the forced BC partition). I wish the drive was less, but I suppose I can live with $100. Don't really need another wired headset, though

Michael Corvin 07-18-08 07:45 PM

I don't check the marketplace daily so this may be old news but there are free themes and gamerpics up for the Dark Knight and X-files, FWIW.
