Crap, you're right. It was VIII. I don't know how I got the two confused. One was great and the other sucked hard (IMO of course).

VIII?

Noonan 03-12-08 10:37 AM

Wow, I'm way off today apparently. Post fixed...

lordzeppelin 03-12-08 11:32 AM

I still play my DC fairly often. I just played Vampire Chronicle yesterday (I LOVE my DC arcade stick...).

Maxflier 03-12-08 11:38 AM

I'll never part with my Dreamcast, it's my favorite console of all-time.

rabbit77 03-12-08 11:43 AM

My Dreamcast faithfully sits in my MAME cabinet and still gets soul calibur play through my X-Arcade stick.

fujishig 03-12-08 01:13 PM

If I could only find:
a) the X-arcade Dreamcast adapter
b) the Dreamcast VGA (or heck, even s-video) output

I'd hook it back up again. Shoot, I should do it anyway... I still haven't finished Lodoss and I haven't played TechRomancer or Bangaio in a while...

Playing NFL2k and using the VMU to pick plays to that your opponent couldn't see was the best idea ever.

I still have mine. I remember going into the Sony Metreon store and talking to an employee about it. He said it lost out to the PS2 cuz it was crap and his co-worker said he wishes he hadn't got rid of his. That was just so funny to me.

fujishig 03-12-08 03:10 PM

Thanks Pixy!

Anyone have the VGA out? Does it make a difference?

It's a huge difference, it's basically 480p before that really became mainstay in TVs/consoles.

An old friend of mine bought all the post-mortem shmups that came out for the system in Japan and had his Dreamcast hooked up to a PC monitor through VGA that was propped on its side for a sweet-ass arcade experience.

I've got an X-Arcade stick, it's a really nice ride. I wish I could downgrade the dual-player setup that was given to me for a single-player stick, it sure would make it easier to use or carry around. That thing is a tank.

I liked the DC controller it was comfortable to me. I do have big hands though.

Analog triggers alone were enough to make it the best controller of its generation IMO.

xmiyux 03-12-08 05:04 PM

I don't have large hands but i really liked the DC controller. I hated the PS2 Dual Shock so perhaps it is a two camp thing (like one hate the other).

The Xbox had analog triggers too.

porieux 03-12-08 05:23 PM

Xbox came out almost a year after the Dreamcast was already dead. I don't consider them part of the same generation. But yeah agreed.

BBEANLPHIE 03-17-08 09:12 AM

What adapter do you guys use to get audio onto your tv? Hopefully my local radio shack has one up for cheap.

What generation do you consider it? I'd say most people lump Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and XBox together.

porieux 03-17-08 04:55 PM

I dunno, but it kind of came in between the two. I guess it doesn't really matter.

The bottom line for me is that if you wanted to play a racing game on a console in 1999-2000, Dreamcast was the best way to do it. Racing with digital gas and brakes sucks.

Microsoft helped develop the Dreamcast controllers...

I really, really loved the Dreamcast, and I still have mine. I love my 360, but I always maintain that the Dreamcast was the last console to really feel like a "true gaming console". I know that sounds strange, but that's just how it feels to me.

The controller was great for me - I have big hands, so I never had issues.

I agree that the lack of a DVD player hurt it. I also think that having the games in CD cases made it seem inferior to PS2 games which came in DVD cases.

Also, they always had to deal with the swarm of "Fuck Sega - they screwed me over with the Saturn" guys, who never let it rest.

Tarantino 03-17-08 09:01 PM

The Dreamcast was awesome. I didn't mind the controller.

The only game I bought that sucked was Soldier of Fortune. I remember the damn loading times on that thing were horrendous.

Fire Pro D 4 LIFE!

I always felt Sega gave up too quickly on the DC. I would rather played the DC anyday over the PS2. If only Sega had put in a dvd player inside the Dreamcast. Who knows what the gaming world would look like now if they did?

KnightLerxst 03-18-08 07:07 AM

I just hooked up my DC again this week in the bedroom. What an awesome system. So much potential that was wasted because of the idiotic strategy of launching the Sega Saturn early.
