Q: Xbox360, games/media & HD-DVD Drive

I have done some research on this, but have yet to see a definitive answer, thus, I would hope someone might have one...

Can the HDDVD drive for the 360 be used for anything other than (HD) DVDs? By this, I mean games, other media files, etc... Games in particular would be great (e.g., using the HD-DVD drive instead of the main one to play games).

Thx in advance.

Not 100% true. You can hook the drive up to your pc and use it just like any other external drive. But, yes, used on the 360 it's only good for DVD or HD-DVD movie playback.

I found out the other day that the 360's HD-DVD drive can be used as an external CD/DVD drive for the MacBook Air. I assume you can use it with any laptop. I haven't needed an external drive yet, but it's nice to know that if it ever comes up, I have one.

With Netflix's recent announcement of going Blu-ray only, I'm wondering how long I'll keep the drive connected to my 360.

Engadget reported recently that once Toshiba announces they are giving up on HD DVD, Microsoft will get serious about rolling out a Blu-Ray attachment... perhaps as soon as May. I think I'd wait for such a device before looking into the HD thing. Especially since Toshiba recently announced they are giving up on HD.

Anyway...

If it goes down to $50 before the end of the month, I may buy another actually.

6 movies (5 rebate and King Kong), extra remote, and backup drive for $50.
