does Final Fantasy 7 hold up as re-playable?
I am going a bit retro lately picking up some of the class SNES games... I find that they all hold up, but they have this kind of cartoony low graphic charm that is just as playable and fun today as back then. Plus it's cool to have the classics for posterity or for collector's value in the future.
I was thinking of going back to FF7 as well, but that is a different sort of game... Does the game hold up despite the blocky 3D graphics? Or is it too dated? And, are there still plans for a possible PS3 remake? How about a PSP port? |
To me it holds up. I went through it again about a year ago which is the first time since originally playing it. Graphics have never been much of an issue to me. Of course the game looks dated but its fun regardless. For you, you won't know until you start playing it. Its not much of an investment at this point. I don't know if you can download it on the PS3 but a used copy shouldn't be more than $10 and should be easy to find.
I also rarely play RPG's and for me to go back and enjoy FF7 all over again is a testement to how great the game is. I don't know about a PS3 remake. I've been on a the fence about a PS3 and I think that would push me over. |
FF7 was replayable for me as of a year or two ago. I still enjoy it. Some of the blocky graphics look funny, but overall I think it's stylized enough that it isn't a huge deal.

i seem to play FF VII every other year or so. its such an amazing game story wise, and game play wise. Sure the graphics are a bit dated, but teh FMV is still cool in it, but the game is just such an amazing game, i cant help but still think its in the top 3 games of all time (just fyi, my top 3 consist of Zelda: Ocerina of Time, Half Life 2, and FF VII)

Well, I still see new Greatest Hits copies for $20 regularly...
|
Yeah it holds up. I didn't even like it the first time through, yet I actually played it all the way through a second time and really enjoyed it... weird .
|
for me i find it kinda hard to go back to older generations. i still think it holds up tho
|
^^ I have trouble going back to N64/PSX and Atari... I'm all for going back to Genesis, SNES, and NES :)
|
I'm replaying it on my PSP and its even more enjoyable this time through because I can just pause the game and its always in my pocket!
|
I felt the graphics were pretty dated. But with the music, the story, the nostalgia, etc... I still enjoyed replaying it.
|
I was playing this again just a little while ago.
2D games have held up a lot better. But FF7 looks ok. Just don't play it on a giant screen. It looks OK on my 37" but it looked awful on my projector at 115". The blockiness and jaggies turns it into a visual mess. The gameplay is still great though. |
Yes. Not on HD though.
|
I don't think you can find FF7 for less than $40-50...
|
About 6 months ago I paid $45 for a copy.
|
Man, my local EB games has quite a few of the greatest hits versions for $24.99 cdn.
Would love to see this come out for PS3 with enhanced graphics. |
I think the sprites of FF6 hold up better than the early and dated polygons of FF7.

It's worth the same it would have been then... Right?
|
I think a sealed original non-greatest hits copy would sell for much more than the original $50 or whatever it cost.
|
yeah, they go for a few hundred now on ebay. Crazy.
|
-eek- About 2 years ago I found a copy for $10 at Gamestop.

Totally forgot about this video:

I think that the game is still worth playing today, even if the in-game visuals might be considered somewhat painful to look at. The FMV holds up well, and the gameplay hasn't changed. The Weapons are just as challenging as they were back in 1997 (Over 10 years ago now? My God.), and the Materia system is still decent in my book. (Much better than other systems... *ahem* junctioning and drawing FTL...)
The game is rapidly becoming a collectible, as are many PSone games now that most retailers have phased them out completely. Even Greatest Hits copies of this game can net you $50 or more in resale value. For many gamers, FFVII is THE Final Fantasy game that got them into the series, and thusly, it will be sought after by many for years to come... as long as there's a way to play it. The possibility of a remake is constantly brought up... the tech demo shown here certainly indicates that a remake on the PS3 could bring this game to a new set of players who might have missed out originally. The chances of a PS3 remake are far greater than a PSP remake, IMO. I think that it will happen at some point. |
I just finished up 9 again a few weeks ago and had forgotten I still had 7. I'm starting it right now.
