I'm kind of in the same boat. My kids are too young for any game system right now. However, in a couple of years my oldest will be old enough. The Wii seems like it would be the best fit. What's complicating this though is my wife wants to get a sing-a-long game ala Singstar or Karaoke Revolution which are only on the PS2. I have my XB360 and tried to sell her on Rock Band but there are not enough songs there she likes other than one or two. Plus, we tried it out at our local Best Buy and I absolutely stink at the drums and not sure I have the time or drive to get better at it (guitar yes, drums no).
So, not sure if I want to plunk down $150 for the PS2 Singstar bundle now and then $250 or whatever it is for the Wii in a couple of years.
Thoughts?

Well the Wii [hopefully] won't be $250 in a couple years.

My 3.5 year old daughter absolutely loves playing with my DS.
I can imagine sometime next year i will acquire a Wii if it has games she would enjoy as well.
As an avid 360 guy, i'm not sure i'd recommend it for the little ones. Personally, if i was in your boat i would buy a PS2 with it's ginormous library.
Buying used though... A Gamecube would probably give you fewer problems since those things are built like tanks.

I just taught my 3 year old how to play Feeding Frenzy on the 360 last night. She's still getting down the analog stick, but she was actually doing fairly decent. Bedtime rolled around and I got the "one more game daddy" already.
